Another fun episode of Batman: The Animated Series! This one was a bit more "down to earth," so to speak, and I definitely had a blast with it. The wordplay was absolutely off the charts this time around. XD

Drop your thoughts below and enjoy the ride!

While not necessarily an all time great, ‘Prophecy of Doom’ is very reminiscent of early Golden Age Batman stories, and I enjoy it for two main reasons: One, it pokes fun at a lot of Gotham’s rich elite. When they’re not playing politics or straight up criminals, they’re incredibly stupid and gullible. Everyone here was so quick to join the “brotherhood” and so easily swayed by a jumble of words that they themselves did not understand. It makes you wonder how anything gets done at the top of the city with people as dumb as they running things. Thank God that Bruce funds practically half the city. Two, Nostromos himself is a very weak and unthreatening villain, but he represents a very real type of scum, a very dangerous one. Those who take advantage of the weak, the uneducated, and anyone else who might listen. Those who use their words to coerce people into ruining their lives for the benefit of the criminal. Cult leaders, sure, but also politicians, organized criminals, even celebrities. Nostromos is a very blatant picture of a much deeper threat. Fun fact for the episode: the show crew considered this episode to be one the most personally disappointing in terms of animation, particularly the climax with the planetarium. Bruce Timm is quoted as saying, “If that whole end sequence with the spinning worlds in the observatory had gone to Junio or any other studio, it might have come off, but it went to Akom. They just weren't able to pull off that level of animation.” (Akom was the animation studio known for making some of the most poorly animated episodes and would be permanently shut down for producing Cat Scratch Fever).

I have a... unique relationship with this episode. As a kid watching Btas on Cartoon Network, this was one of those episodes I had no strong opinions about. I neither loved nor hated it. And whenever it aired, I usually watched it, unless something else was on. But all that changed 10 years ago. See, there used to be a Youtuber called ThatLongHairedCreepyGuy, who did Doug Walker styled comedic reviews of a lot of old TV shows with a puppet sidekick he called Chibithulu. The channel got taken down a while ago for unknown reasons, but I always loved his Batman Retrospective series (he got as far as "Demon's Quest Part 2 before being taken down). And during his "Prophecy of Doom" review, when Lisa and her dad were introduced, he said one of the funniest lines ever. "Okay, I'm not even gonna try to remember this guy's name. So, for the rest of this review I'm just gonna call him 'Rich Idiot'." It made me laugh. So now whenever I see this episode, I remember that old video and I smile.

I can't help but wonder. If it wasn't for all the bombings and attempts at murder, do you think Batman would've left Nostromos alone? I mean, if he'd only been conning these rich morons out of their money without endangering other people's lives.

I doubt Bruce would let it slide. He’s opposed to crime, no matter the victim (for the most part), and if Nostromos and his accomplice could get away with it with Gotham’s elites, he could’ve probably done it elsewhere (just maybe not Metropolis’ elite, he’s a little to smart for that).

All I can say is screw Akom for shitty animation. XD For real, though. I appreciate all the extra info you guys provide for me AND other audience members. Ty!
