The return of the Professor of Fear himself… The Scarecrow!

I completely forgot he had been introduced until he popped back up in this episode, so it was really cool seeing him make a return! And it was great getting to see Robin again, even if he definitely wasn’t quite his usual self. XD

Drop your thoughts below, and enjoy the ride!

- Robin’s last and only appearance up to this point was in episode 3, ‘Christmas with the Joker’ (Christmas 1992, currently 1993). He was on break then, and so was available. - I know the “grown man in tights” joke is still pretty funny for Robin, but the real reason that he was aged up in this series was that Fox Kids had a strict censorship rule that children couldn’t be put in mortal peril at any cost, so the writers aged Robin up and put him in college as an excuse to use him when they could. I honestly quite like it. It shows that time has indeed passed, with a Batman who’s nearly a decade into his career already. While he still has plenty of years left in this universe, there’s already a well established history here. - Scarecrow’s first appearance was in episode 2, ‘Nothing to Fear’ (Autumn 1992). His mask design was totally different then, being just a mere sack on his head. Scarecrow is the only character in all of BTAS to have undergone a redesign within the show itself, not across shows, which is quite fascinating. It works well lore-wise, though, as obviously he’d want to work on his mask in order to get a greater fear response. - Bruce Timm had mixed feelings about this episode, being quoted as stating that it has “great TMS animation for a really stupid story.” - Scarecrow amassing all this gambling money that he now has hid away works great as a transition for his next story, which you will get to in time.

You're right about everything, save for one minor detail. BTAS originally aired on Fox Kids, not Kids WB. It was Fox who had all the strict censorship that helped shape the series into what it is today. By comparison, Warner Bros had much laxer censorship guidelines at the time. Which is why when Bruce Tim and the gang went to work on STAS and TNBA for Kids WB, they were able to get away with a lot more. Like having a younger Robin for example. Of course, working for the WB had its own share of problems too. Like the network abruptly canceling STAS and TNBA in favor of a new teenage Batman series. But of course, that ended up working out too.

That's right. I remember he was in it for only one episode. Partly why I didn't recognize him outside of the suit.. he's been used so little so far. I do like that he is in his 20's in this series. It's a different spin outside of him being Nightwing around this age.
