Live from vacation at the beach with no computer, just a iPhone! These will be less edited and more real. Hope you don’t mind!

Today, I’m talking about “This Is Why Copying Tutorials Isn’t Helping You”.

Now, I am not saying - Stop watching tutorials, but here are 5 tips for you to think about!

A lot of people treat watercolor tutorials like recipes.Do this step, then this step, use these exact colors—and if it doesn’t turn out, they think they did something wrong.

But watercolor doesn’t work like baking. There’s no guaranteed outcome, even if you follow every step perfectly.

A tutorial can show you one possible result—not a rule.Your paper, your water, your timing are all different.

So instead of asking, ‘Did I do this right?’Ask, ‘What is my paper doing right now?’

That shift—from following steps to responding—is when watercolor starts to make sense.

PATREON EXTENDED VERSION: WHY COPYING WATERCOLOR TUTORIALS DON’T HELP!

I’m sharing something a little different with you first. Tomorrow I’ll be painting while talking through a topic that might feel a bit controversial: why copying tutorials often isn’t actually helping you improve. This isn’t a rant against tutorials—I use them too. But I’ve seen so many artists feel frustrated, stuck, or convinced they’re “bad at watercolor” when the real issue is how tutorials are usually taught and followed. While I paint, I’ll be talking about: why tutorials feel like recipes (and why watercolor doesn’t work that way) the decisions artists make that rarely get explained timing, stopping, and adapting when things don’t go as planned. This is more of a real-time conversation than a polished lesson.Just me painting, thinking out loud, and sharing the stuff I wish someone had explained years ago. 🎨 Want the full, raw painting sessions? 👉 https://www.patreon.com/KellieChasse If you found this helpful, feel free to like, comment, or share your experience with how copying has helped or hindered you.
