This month we’re leaning into something I always come back to in my own studio… letting go a little.
Spontaneous watercolor is all about allowing the paint to lead instead of trying to control every step. We start with simple shapes, loose water, and color on wet paper, then see what naturally happens. It’s unpredictable in the best way.
Some paintings will bloom in ways you didn’t plan. Some will feel soft and atmospheric. Others might feel a little wild or unexpected—but that’s where the learning (and fun) really happens.
Instead of aiming for perfection, we focus on:
Water control and timing
Letting edges form naturally
Layering without overthinking
Responding instead of forcing
These sessions are meant to feel relaxed, almost like a studio play session where you can experiment without pressure.
You can follow along exactly, or use it as inspiration for your own ideas. There’s no “right outcome” here—just paint, observation, and curiosity.
If you’ve ever felt like you tighten up too much when you paint, this is a great way to loosen back up and reconnect with that flow state again.
