Whew! Okay! Sorry about this being a couple of days later than usual, folks. I've had some delays caused by a couple of medical issues I don't care to get into (One of them was a root canal, the other unresolved currently, which is why I don't want to get into it. Too complicated.) To be fair, I did give you guys, gals, and others an extra in the form of another entry of Why Was There No Truck?!. So I don't feel too awful about this being a touch later than normal ;-).

It's also, sadly, only 14,000 words instead of the usual 15,000. But that was actually more of a case of content rather than time. I could have included a few more downtime perspectives on Asuka, I suppose. But there's already a training montage that touches on virtually everyone at least one, plus a pretty long lemon that pushes the relationship elements along as far as I want to in a single go. I also kinda don't want to show what's going on elsewhere, at the moment, as it would be determinantal to the upcoming hopefully-very-epic bits.

Which is why I stopped where I did. If I went any farther, I'd be into the period where things are going to start happening very fast for a little while. So where I actually did stop was simply the logical place to do so without making a cliffhanger (which I try not to do). So slightly smaller than normal. Sorry! Anyway, I think the chapters do a solid job of buttoning things up before events start becoming a runaway set of several different trains, all on Collison courses. Hopefully, they are enjoyable :-).

As always, the new bits of story are attached here in various formats, and I'll be updating the Master Files in the Pinned Post shortly. I'll also be posting some author's notes in the comments once I've, you know, actually written them. Enjoy more of Halfway Broken!

As Usual, the art for this post isn't mine! I went looking for a hot springs imagne of Nami that wasn't outright pornographic and found it ;-). It belongs to Chemical Bro, if you want to see more like it. Honestly, despite not being my preferred style, their stuff is pretty solid!

Chapter 67 Author's Notes: AN 1: Training montage of dooooomm! In part, this was a chance to show the everyone on the crew actually DOES interact, I just can't show everything that happens! I'm not Oda who want's to draw this out until five years after I die for tax reasons! It also does a decent job of showing the direction that each character is drifting in, though. Hinting at how each of them is going to develop. AN 2: Also, I could resist doing the Ponygirl thing with Nami at LEAST one, given the Fruit she got ;-). Even if I kept it tame... AN 3: Just as importantly, I had Luffy address something that a lot of people have commented on, thinking I was underselling him or not using his Devil Fruit fully. That itched at my brain, since I knew it was on purpose, but I couldn't fully explain without spoilers. Luffy is NOT perfect. He might know how far away the Top is, in some ways, but he also hasn't REALLY been challenged all that hard aside from Garp. He tried, really, seriously, tried, to not let himself stagnate. But it seeped in over the course of YEARS, when no one else could REALLY push him. Combined with the VERY STRONG desire to not let the WG know he has a Mythical Zoan fruit until he HAS to, he self-sabotaged a bit. It was something I did intentionally, building it in as a flaw that Luffy would eventually have to correct. With Yamato acting as the perfect wake up call. It's something that happened to canon Luffy as well, with it being Ace's death that knocked him out of the fantasy that he was strong enough. Since I'm not running that plot line the same, I planned for an alternative. That this also let me keep Luffy from being TOO over powered in the earlier portions of the Grand Line, while leaving room to grow into that OPness, was also important. Whew. Been wanting to say that for a while, after SO MANY people complained, and now I finally can.

Chapter 68 Author's Notes: AN 1: Yeah, this chapter is mostly lemon :-p. Honestly, it's been a while since I did a properly involved lemon for this story. Besides, it's about time that the build up to adding Robin into the relationship fully hit it's stride, so it served to push the boundaries there. Once SHE gets added, every additional girl will be easier, since they know their joining a harem/polycule. Robin is the critical tipping point, and we're ALMOST built up to the point that adding her in narratively makes sense. Robin herself just needs a bit more development, since admittedly skipping Water 7/Enes Lobby leaves her not QUITE as far along her personal development as she would have been otherwise. AN 2: I'm moderately annoyed with myself for somehow missing the mark and not getting this in Chapter 69 instead of 68. I somehow didn't process that until I published it. Nooooo, I should have split the training chapter up to make it work! Teenage me would be ashamed of the missed chance!

Chapter 69 Author's Notes: AN 1: So, Brook...I was honestly uncertain what to do with him until I actually read everything available on the Rumbar Pirates. That helped, quite a bit, in figuring out some motivation for him to stick with the Starwhats when he could have just gone back to chill with Laboon. I WANTED to keep him, as he helps keep the gender disparity from getting to bad on the crew. I just needed to figure out the right way to tweak his motivations. I think what I came up with makes sense? As does Luffy's thoughts on maybe helping push the 'music/sound' side of Brook's development instead of adding yet another swordsman main to the crew. AN 2: The Expedition is something I had in mind for a while. It probably won't ever see a lot of use? That's hard to say, as part of the reason I wanted it to exist is to make using Vivi's air doors to move around the world easier. Getting a ship the size of the Discovery through them is something that only seems plausible once she's had the training years to develop. It would be a bit extreme right now, as she really hasn't had the Fruit that long. AN 3: Some insights and clues of what is to come. I've now provided enough of a hint that the clever among you might piece together just what Luffy is intending to do...

Matthew Robar

Are we getting a bard? Please tell me we’re getting a bard? You can’t hint at a fondness for music and exotic weapon choice. I neeed me a sexy moron that can bone (heh get it?) a dragon to create a problem before going back for seconds and somehow solving it

Mr Mouse

I screwed my way into this, and by god, I'll screw my way out

Mr Mouse

I don't know how to do spoilers on here so... . . . . . . . . . . I'm guessing he's going to pull a Tiger Fisher, given how understaffed the marines are, and how much they're going to have to pull from nearby places, like say, Mary Geoise. It'd be a massive blow to the WG, would fit into the Tequila Wolf comment, and could be relatively easily done, with the use of Vivis ability; Tho' I'm not sure on the power levels of the God's Knights, so who knows?

Jaideep

This Luffy is definitely going to give a heads up to his old man. There no way in hell this situation is not going to get more chaotic. Rather than fighting directly its better for Luffy to create multiple points of trouble for the marines.

Gabriel Coelho

Will Hancock be in the harem, she is easily one of the more likable, if not a little crazy, female characters in canon. Another thing, you keep saying the marines would have trouble with alabasta, but how would the kingdom that was almost doomed by just crocodile survive even a single admiral or a couple of vice admirals, not even mentioning the CP agencies, after all, considering the kingdom’s deficiencies water seven should be a bigger trade hub with the sea train and the proximity with ennies lobby and the gate of justice, and the WG didn’t have any scruples about sending CP-9 there.

Gabriel Coelho

As the knights are the last line of defense for the WG they should be pretty strong, a couple of them should be at admiral level, if not approaching, not even mentioning the five elders and the minuscule possibility of Im showing up with Yamato and the Nika fruit aboard, it would be foolish for luffy to do it with his canon knowledge

Camille

That would be amazing! Luffy will probably start the chaos at Sabaody by freeing the slaves there, but freeing the slaves in Mary Geoise as well would be so cool! Vivi would definitely be vital for evacuation. This would also be a great battle arc using the entire crew’s strength, but I don’t know if they are strong enough to survive against the God’s Knights (and definitely not if Imu and Kong decide to fight as well). Additionally, this would put a serious target on the crew’s back, as well as on Alabasta with Vivi’s involvement, so I don’t know if Luffy is ready for such a bold move. However, the marines would probably not be strong enough for retaliation so there’s that. Oh and Luffy might contact the Revolutionaries and offer to make that move together, in which case they would definitely have the firepower and most of those issues would be resolved. The Strawhat’s could let the Revolutionaries take the full blame and cover their involvement by disguising themselves.

Camille

Thanks for the chapters! The entire crew’s development was displayed well :)

Derek Palm

Hell yea new chapters

You said you would try not to do cliffhangers but now I'm dying to know what the hell Luffy is planning

Novus's Fanfiction Works

I don't really consider that a cliffhanger :-p. Since I didn't leave them mid action or in danger or anything ;-).

Novus's Fanfiction Works

No. The harem has already been established by a series of votes here in Patreon. It's locked in as Luffy/Nami/Robin/Vivi/Yamato. I have gone over, both in story and in author's notes, exhaustively why the Marines would have trouble with Alabasta. Crocodile had a MASSIVE advantage there because of his ability to control sand, and honestly STILL needed to manipulate events to divide the Alabastian army. Remember, this is one of the ONLY islands we've seen with a population in the MILLIONS. With their army, once recombined with the rebels, exceeding 750,000 troops. They also have, even in canon, multiple Zoan users. Here, they ALSO have the Sand-Sand Fruit, half a dozen other Devil Fruits, Dial Technology, and a large fleet seized from Baroque Works. I've also made it VERY clear that they could NOT stand off a truly serious attack by the WG without help. Just that such an attack would be COSTLY AS FUCK for the Marines, who really can't afford that right now. Water 7 is tiny, compared to Alabasta, and has virtually no evidence of trade beyond it's shipyards. Alabasta has multiple port cities that are each larger than Water 7. Again, it's one of the only islands we've seen that is genuinely large scale in population. Based on their army size, it's safe to say the general population of Alabasta is probably a minimum of 20 million, and likely higher.

Gabriel Coelho

Still can’t see it, if a single kingdom could give the WG pause they would not be feared as they are, I understand what you are trying to say, I just don’t agree with it, but aside from this and the fml issue, I’m liking the story so far

Novus's Fanfiction Works

I won't give out too many spoiler hints. I will only say that you're on the right track but not quite on target as he knows attacking Mary Geoise itself would likely not end overly well. He only has very vague knowledge past the Fishman Island arc, but it's enough to be aware that the WG has forces beyond the Marines. He notably DOESN'T know exactly how powerful some of them are or exactly who they are, though...

Novus's Fanfiction Works

lol. Maybe not explicitly a bard of that sterotype. But I'm certainly planning to take cues from various sound-using magic types, including DnD bards.

Mr Mouse

In that case, I think Camille is right and he's gonna go after Sabaody; Either way, thanks for the chapter, can't wait for more

WhatAFungi

I like this story a lot, and I thought this chapter was great. I’m having problems picturing/remembering what Nami’s hybrid form looks like. Lastly, I’m happy with how Vivi is turning out, but now I’m thinking about what if the Discovery “ate” the door fruit instead of her. Teleporting flag ship sounds perfect for this setting. Lastly, best wishes to you author, with your unspecified ailment.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

I've yet to explicitly define Nami's hybrid form, but I personally consider it to be along the lines of what some Rule34 artists draw a humanoid Rainbow Dash like (Very Much NSFW Example: https://rule34.xxx/index.php?page=post&s=view&id=12913795&tags=rainbow_dash_%28mlp%29+wings+) Eh, they didn't know the Discovery would be able to do that at the point she got it, and it's honestly still better for Vivi to have it. The whole point was for her to easily be able to go back and forth to Alabasta, which just the ship teleporting wouldn't make plausible. There IS another teleport Fruit in the series, but honestly probably won't have it be one of the ones that ship eats, since eventually Vivi will be able to simply open a door large enough for the Discovery. Right now she's just too new to the Fruit, only having actually had it a couple of months.

WhatAFungi

Now you got me speculating on future power ups, and now I’m super hyped and want more.

Gscruiser

So, we know Luffy can see all the Kinks of his crew. Any chance we all could get a peek? ;P

Novus's Fanfiction Works

I've honestly been avoiding doing that on purpose, since once I do so they are more-or-less set in stone. While I have a solid idea of them, characters can surprise me with how they end up developing. I'd hate to miss out on something perfect just because I didn't think of it when I wrote down a set of definitive panels like that.

Gscruiser

Honestly, fair enough

BPellet

Will we see a surge in Kuina's importance again? Kuina has a lot of first mate moments so far (where she's in charge when Luffy is busy), but I'm worried about her relevance due to Yamato. A lot of Kuina's other moments came from her being the second strongest on the crew and I'm kind of worried about her importance with that no longer being the case. Just wondering since I quite like how you've written Kuina so far. Anyways thank you for the chapters.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Kuina's still the number three in power, so it's unlikely there will be too much falloff. Remember, the original story showed the 'Monster Trio' a lot. When serious fighting happens, she's still one of the most likely to be involved. Particularly as she's broadening her skillset.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

...I don't know how I can more explicitly say this, since I already very explicitly stated it. Alabasta CAN'T stand off a truly serious attack by the Marines. They can only make it not worth the price of paying.

Jared Andrade

Have you thought about using spirit healing to repair whitebeard damage heart cause roger. It wouldn't really add anything to his strength but would massively increase his endurance and no longer make the fight a race against the clock.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Debatable if it would work, given that Marco's flames can't do the job and they should be pretty close to the same thing. More to the point, though, they have no contact with Whitebeard. He wouldn't be likely to let them try, given they aren't an allied crew of his. Particularly not when he's on a warpath.

Jared Andrade

If they learned enough from brook devil fruit to completely refresh or rebuild the heart it could work. Though I think with Ace introduction whitebeard would be more than willing to try it. He's to confident in his strength to fear betrayal in that form

A minor nomenclature correction of note: In Chapter 67, Luffy refers to Chopper as a reindeer-human. However, Chopper is actually a human-reindeer. This is because Devil Fruit nomenclature puts it as [Devil Fruit]-[Species/Object]. For example, Luffy is a rubber-human (or rubber-man) not a human-rubber. Or Aokiji is an ice-human (or ice-man) not a human-ice. And Sandersonia is an anaconda-human (or anaconda-woman) not a human-anaconda. Chopper is easy to get tripped up by this because his Human Fruit makes it confusing. Sengoku gets a pass as a Buddha-Human but is technically a Human-Human. Weapons that ate Devil Fruits are confusing for the same rules. Lassoo is a dog-gun not a gun-dog and Funkfreed is an elephant-sword not a sword-elephant. It's a minor thing, but it's the kind of detail that natives/those that have been in the world of One Piece for years will intuitively know. The same way that English speakers know that "green big house" is wrong and "big green house" is right. :)
