Woo! Got a slightly late start on the poll story this month since I had to reread much of Pandora's Box to make sure I wasn't tripping over myself. Thankfully I also had the bits going forward from where we left off in February more completely outlined than usual, so it's out on time! This particular batch of chapters is right at the 15,000 word mark, and spans the entire summer between Year 1 and Year 2. Meaning that the next update of the story will drive straight into events of year two, which will be rather different than canon despite a few bits remaining the same.

As always, the new bits of story are attached here in various formats, and I'll be updating the Master Files in the Pinned Post shortly. I will also be doing a few author's notes in the comment section in a bit! Enjoy some more of Harry Potter - Pandora's Box after a six month gap!

Chapter 18: A/N 1: Sirius Black - Nope, I didn't forget about him. I just didn't give Harry's look into his situation screen time during first year as I was both trying to push through the first year fairly fast AND it would have just been background back-and-forth since I never intended to deal with it quickly. Quicker than canon, yes, but not quickly. The reason for that is highlighted in this chapter. Without talking to Sirius himself, Harry lacks enough information to determine just what the hell is going on. Unfortunately for Sirius, Lily's memories of him include knowing he has a temper. Meaning that, while they want to believe he's innocent, they can't convince themselves without evidence that Sirius didn't do exactly what everyone said...just for for the reasons everyone else thought. Worse, it's damnably hard to find evidence for a crime that old, when everyone that witnessed it has been memory charmed AND the crime scene wasn't exactly exhaustively investigated due to the Wizards all going mad with happiness that Voldy was gone right about the same time.

Chapter 19: A/N 1: Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry! So, I've seen a LOT of fics disparage Hogwarts over the years. With writers blasting it for actually being subpar instead of a premier institution. Bashing the schools seems to be super popular...and it's frankly played out, not canonically supportable, and boring as heck at this point. Yawn, not doing that. Instead, I decided to take advantage of the fact I set Hogwarts up to be a slightly older student base to run with the idea that Hogwarts actually IS a premier school. They have some SERIOUSLY high level professors in areas like Transfiguration and Charms, at minimum. Really, the only classes that are dubious canonically are Defense, which has a curse on it, and Care of Magical Creatures which ONLY BECOMES dubious when Hagrid takes over. Even then, when Hagrid is on point, he's actually pretty solid, he's just not great at picking appropriately leveled tasks for students. Thus, I've set up this version of Hogwarts to be legitimately one of the best schools in Europe, with Harry simply not realizing just how out of the ordinary he and his friends are. I'd honestly say this is actually supported by canon, given that most of those we see actual grades for are exceptional students. Even Ron, book version and with Hermoine's help at least. A/N 2: Wizarding population. So...it's almost a standing joke that J.K. Rowling is terrible with numbers. Her numbers throughout the series just flat out don't add up. I've based my population numbers on a single point in book four: "A hundred thousand witches and wizards were taking their places in the seats, which rose in levels around the long oval field." There were 100,000 people at the Quiddich World Cup. Yes, many had traveled to it from elsewhere, but even if we assume that only 50% of the crowd are local, that's 50,000 UK-based witches and wizards...and not everyone in the entire country would have come to the game. To me, that says that there HAS to be a population in the 70-80k range at minimum. Which also means that the 1,000 students at a time at Hogwarts are...not enough. Doubly so if there are only three serious schools across Europe, meaning that at least some of Hogwarts students are virtually certain to be international. Ergo, I decided to add this into the above point from A/N 1. That there are other schools...and the difference is that they only train you up to OWL level.

Chapter 20 & 21: A/N 1: Not much to say here. Hopefully I did a decent job continuing to build on the way Ancient Runes works with magic in this version of Harry Potter.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Chapter 22: A/N 1: The main thing to address here is events with Dobby. Yep, they still happened, but much of what he tried to do was foiled by Harry living a very different life. Now, before anyone tries to accuse me of sticking to Rails of Canon here...Lucius Malfoy never showed any sign he actually knew what the Journal did. Which means, with the castle having been threatened multiple times and people worried over safely there? He actually has a STRONGER reason to try and disrupt Hogwarts with it than in canon. Of course, the Basilisk is DEAD, killed by the Shoggoth. That means that, while the Journal will be in play, the events of Year 2 are going to look pretty dramatically different. Have no fear that I'm suddenly swerving back onto the canon rails ;-).

Big fan of the Alley names. Wizarding naming conventions truly are ridiculous. Also wondering on the fact that when Harry is explaining Pandora he mentions her being from the neural maps of 6 people. And proceeds to only name 5. Did you miss a name or was it supposed to be 5 people? I can't of the top of my head say if I myself am forgetting someone.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Ugh. It should be five. For some reason I don't understand, I have trouble keeping the number of donors and who they are straight >_<. Every single time I write anything about them as a collective, I seem to get something off.

Daemonioros

That's why it's fanfiction and not a published novel. Hell even with those editors sometimes miss something. Good to know it's 5 though. I was racking my brain a bit trying to think of another woman lily was close to who could be the 6th. Really enjoying these chapters. And especially interested in what Diary Tom will end up actually doing without the Basilisk around. Might actually be more dangerous since without plan 1 he has to get creative and Diary Tom (despite being obviously Unstable) seemed to be the most put together of the Horcrux soul fragments. Of course often theorised to be because it's a larger bit of soul. Though I personally find that weird. How the hell do you quantify a soul?

WhatAFungi

I thought maybe voldie might have left a price and Pandora and Harry are keeping it subconsciously locked down. So they accidentally said 6, only mention 5, and try to forget the dark lords price because giving it thought gives it power. Or it could be a typo and I’m thinking to hard.

This set of chapters was absolutely brilliant! Currently very glad to have voted for this story this month :D Love the world building and magic lore, I've always found JKR's books to be limiting in terms of magic and therefore frustrating. It's a world of magic which should be incredibly exciting, but her Harry is not interested in it enough to push boundaries past what is minimally required, and his spell repertoire by the end of the series is truly pathetic. Would love to see Hermione maturing in the future and reaching out to Harry, since I think that their academic conversations could be truly interesting. Would love to see her push boundaries even more than she did in canon once she is motivated to do so by Harry's innovations. You commented that she was in 2nd place in their year (as expected), did she work harder and learn more in her 1st year than she did in canon since Susan mentioned she was competing with Harry? Competition breeds excellence and all that. Would also love to have Harry take some interest in the possibilities of Potions and all the interesting magical ingredients (plants & creatures), but he seems a bit swamped at the moment! Will he remain hyper-focused on the possibilities of Runes throughout this story or will he eventually branch out? Btw, is the ship for this fanfic HarryxKatie? Or is it a spoiler that you're not willing to give up yet? Because if you're going the HarryxKatie route I fully approve! There are no way near enough of those if you exclude all the harem fanfics. Oh wait I just remembered Pandora saying something about a harem never mind. Since that's the case, I'm hoping you'll include Fleur, she should be pretty impressed with Harry's inventions by the time of the Tournament, especially since she seems to love charms and wards etc. (I always head canon that she masters in enchanting in addition to her curse-breaking career). Another great pick could be Tonks, she's always awesome. But it seems that you might also go the Daphne direction however, and more than 3 women might be pushing it. (Whoops I rambled sorry lol, I tend to do that)

How come Pandora needs to have the transference ritual done for the runes? I thought between the mental maps of 6 people that presumably went through that before she’d had enough understanding. Hell I’m almost positive they thought about trying to find a way to transfer her understanding to Harry before writing it off as too dangerous and to get professional help. And if it’s “teaching her magic how to do it” that dosnt make sense as she has Lily’s magic and it presumably already knows

WhatAFungi

Great chapters, and I’m glad he’s sharing pandora with more people. The isolation can’t be good for her. On a completely unrelated note. I think you mentioned not caring if people make fic recommendations down here, so here is this story I can’t get out of my head. It’s called “Not so Human Nature” by Refure. It’s a Pokemon/ Worm crossover, but very little Worm knowledge is needed. They update pretty much daily, with non-stop good quality. So freaking good, y’all should check it out.

Gr1ffin

I admit, this does make a good point. Having the tap from Lily's magic plus her memories should have some results from Lily's rituals that she had done to the point she died. Be interesting if the memories from the others also were superimposed with their own interpretations.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

@ Daemonioros The Early Access stuff is also only given a basic editings pass :-p. I usually go over it again (and The Foreign Traveler often does too because they are awesome like that) before it gets pushed to the various public sites. I've seen a lot of fanfiction that assumes the Diary is the most put together Horcrux, but we never really see any of the other manifest properly. Personally, I don't really think you can quantify a soul, so I've never really thought the people imagining it as a decreasingly sized thing as he splits off more bits made sense. @WhatAFungi Firm no to Voldie leaving anything. Almost literally the first thing that happened in the fic was Pandora firmly and aggressive expelling the Horcrux. This was just a typo case.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Glad you liked them :-). Yes, the JKR books are a bit limited in terms of exploring magic. In her defense, though, they were originally intended as Children's Books, with Harry's adventures being more a coming of age story than a deep dive into a magic system/world. It's only the fact that so many adults read it, or those that read it originally grew up, that leaves a lot of people wanting a deeper narrative/exploration. As for Hermoine...I'm going to be honest here. I'm probably a heretic in the Harry Potter community because I flat out don't like Hermoine. She's such a creature of raw Order that she makes the deeps of my chaotic soul itch just reading about her. While she might feature in later years, it's unlikely she'll ever be close to Harry since I frankly don't want to write her. Harry will eventually branch out, but might not do something like potions/herbalism personally, so much as bring in others with the right specialties to help with projects. That's sort of why I've been building him a larger circle of associates at Hogwarts. The Relationship for this fic isn't set in stone. It's EXTREMELY likely that Katie will be his FIRST relationship. Whether or not they stay together is uncertain. As is whether the pairing ends up as a single girl or multiple. I don't have strong feelings on that for this fic, so it will probably end up as a poll at some point. Which, based on the results of every other time I've asked that, likely means a multi-ship :-p. The total number I'd accept for this fic is fairly low, though. Probably no more than 3. And there are a few like Hermoine and Luna I wouldn't ever be willing include. Hermoine for obvious reasons that I don't like her. Luna because I frankly don't think I can write her well enough to get her that deeply involved.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Because you're assumption that Pandora has Lily's magic is incorrect. Someone actually accessed this quite some time ago on Questionable Questing, so let me just copy as much of my response from there as I can make work with the poor formatting in comments: "A reasonable thought, given the information I've given. It wouldn't really work, though, as Harry doesn't have Lily's magical core, just her magical tap. The way I have magic set up in this is that magic works like so: Magic is an energy that exists as a fundamental force, it can be concentrated in places, but much like gravity or electromagnetism it's always there in the background. ↓ Magical creatures have a 'tap' into that force. The tap can be stronger or weaker, and controls how fast their personal reserve is refilled. ↓ Every magical creature/being has a magical 'reserve/core' which stores energy. Like the tap it can very in size. Unlike the tap it can grow like a muscle. ↓ From the reserve/core, wizards and witches have a magical circulatory system. Magic 'channels' that carry their magic to parts of the body, or out of the body. ↓ Wands or other Foci essentially connect to those channels at a shallow point (hands in most cases) and artificially extend the channel out of the body, making it easier to use magic externally. Wandless magic is possible, but more difficult, because the user is effectively internally controlling their magic to bridge that gap instead. Much more than power, this requires CONTROL. Which is why Harry's control was so good prior to even reaching Hogwarts, as he'd been working on that aspect for years, AND has artificially ordered magical channels which make it easier. What Lily did to make Pandora possible was give her creation her personal magical tap. Not her core/reserve. So Harry has two magical 'taps' with one core, meaning his magic refills at an insane rate compared to a regular witch or wizard. Since Pandora uses up a lot of magic constantly just to maintain her existence, Harry's core has also grown far stronger far faster than normal. So his personal magical reserves are closer to an adult magic user's than a child's, and only growing larger as he keeps pushing his reserves despite that. However, dragging back to the original point, Pandora doesn't have the magical imprint for runes, since she only got Lily's tap instead of tap and core. So she can't do the transference ritual :)."

Novus's Fanfiction Works

*waggles hand in so-so motion* Pandora's not human, so she's not as affected by something like isolation. She's closer to something like Cortana from Halo in a lot of way. (in fact, the idea was based on characters like Cortana and Edi). She'll enjoy being able to interact with people though. I certainly don't mind fic recommendations :-). I did a quick search and only found that one on AO3, which I refuse to use since my tiff with them. I'll have to see if it's posted anywhere else.

I'm here for this

The Foreign Traveler

Oh Harry, you poor naive boy… How have you not yet realized you live in interesting times? ESPECIALLY with a certain dark tosser after your blood? LITERALLY at that. Your entire Hogwarts Career is going to be wrought with interest and life-threatening danger. Better buck up and grit your teeth kid…cause this is inevitably going to HURT. At least you’re in a far better position than Canon Harry…thanks mostly to Pandora. Ugh, honestly. Canon Harry knew there was a Dark Lord after his life by the end of his First Year but does he do the smart thing? Like studying magic like Arthimacy, Ancient Runes or doing independent study on other types of Magic? You know, Magic that could actually help better protect his friends and himself? NNNNNOOOOOO. Instead he decided to be lazy and took Divination while getting lucky in, admittingly many but not all, of his encounters. Could be argued, of course, that he could trust Dumbledore and the other adults to handle this matter but after McGonagall dropped the ball and thus 3 eleven year olds had to save the Stone? Nough said. Ahem. Sorry for the tangent. Great Chapter as usual!

Novus's Fanfiction Works

The funny thing? This Harry might know Voldie is still around, but he has no idea the dude is still after him. Since he stuck his head in his inventing, he never had the confrontation with Quirelmort. So he's completely oblivious to the fact Voldie was involved. I'm completely with you on canon Harry though. Harry Potter is a good book series, but the more often you read it, the more AGGREVATING Harry gets. Like, dude, you have a serial killer after you. Learn some basic defense skills beyond a disarming charm and Patronus! He DID technically get a bit better with Dumbledore's Army, but it was still well shy of the fire that should have been lit under his ass out of sheer self-preservation. Let alone the mere fact that MAGIC IS REAL, how can you NOT want to explore it?!

Denn Mael

Well, thats one of the things about narratives. The characters and event happen and behave the way they do not because "Yes, an actual human in this situation would have this reaction," but because "Thematically, this series of events and reactions would progress the plot along where the author needs it to go in order to get to the end the author wants to get at while illustrating the themes and morals and ideas the author wants to convey. Its oh so frustrating at times but "stupid for the sake of the plot" aka "bs power of fate and destiny" is a real factor to consider.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

True. But one of the differences between a good author and a mediocre one is the amount you need to force the issue in a way that feels unrealistic. Note that Rowling actually DOESN'T fail on that point. Harry's a teenage male with at least one bad influence on his study habits in the form of Ron, and no adult figures for guidance. The way he plays out is entirely reasonable within that context. It's just an irritating context when you, as the reader, want to know more.

Tungst3n

Im must admit, even though I vote for Pandora, it took way to long to remember the plot and where it was. But it was a fun read. Thanks for the release, take care and have a good one.
