Right! First of the month means the first release of the month! Specifically, 5,800ish words of Halfway Broken!

In this release the crew returns to the Grand Line. One general note about that? How I'm intending to run the 'timeskip' years is a combination of four things. First, which we've already seen with the previous release, is training chapters. Important, but too many of them would get old quick. So, to break those up is the rest of the bits.

The second bit is the repurposing of some anime filler, movie islands, or places that individual members of the crew visited during the timeskip (such as Weatheria). An example of that is the repurposed anime filler islands is the first thing we'll run into now that they are back on the Grand Line.

The third component is the occasional original island to flesh things out.

The fourth and last thing applies to all of the above, in that a fair bit of time will be spent on crew interaction and dynamics instead of combat. Luffy's relationship will obviously feature, as it has all along. But we'll also likely see more POVs from other crewmembers more frequently.

All of this is in service of making sure that covering the timeskip years doesn't get boring or repetitive. Or turn into one huge training arc that takes forever :-p. Hopefully, the mix works out pretty well overall. As usual, the new stuff is attached here in various formats, and I'll be posting new Master Files in the Pinned Post. I'll also put author's notes in the comments below when I have time.

Note: Post images are snapshots from the anime filler episode/movie tie in episode that I pulled the island they are stopping at first from.

Chapter 89 A/N 1: As far as I'm concerned, every navigator in One Piece that isn't Nami should be taken out back and shot for daring to call themselves a navigator. The issue of not having a working compass is LAUGHABLY easy to overcome by various means. I go with it, reluctantly, because Oda made the issue such an important part of how the story works. It is, however, nonsense that I can't help but poke holes in here and there. Such as the fact that even a single Eternal Pose could take the place of a regular north-pointing compass if you just redid your calculations based on that point instead of one of the poles. Two would make it even easier. Three reaches the point that you could damn near replicate a GPS system with them. A/N 2: The Minotaur Pirates are my own creation, a more-or-less throw away crew with reasons to be just strong enough to provide decent punching bags and not much else.

Chapter 90 A/N 1: Little East Blue/Kansorn Island is from the movie-tie in episode for Strong World (the movie Shiki was from). A/N 2: The bit about the Calm Belt is my own reasoning, not canon. It was basically me figuring out how Kansorn Island, a place near the Calm Belt and in the Grand Line, but where EVERYONE is from or descended from the East Blue, could come to be. I think the logic fits reasonably well within One Piece, though. Including explaining why some desperate crews (like the Rumbar Pirates) were willing to risk trying the Calm Belt to get off the Grand Line. If SOME ships, even just one in fifty, occasionally make it through by luck? Then it makes a bit more sense that those desperate enough might try it. A/N 3: Yes, Nami had a pervert teenage fanclub that carved a nude statue of her on the island -_-.

I can’t remember if you ever examined the magic that is the eternal pose, it obviously shouldn’t work via magnetism like the other compass’s, so there’s obviously some spirit/magic stuff going on there. Between the spiritual sensitivity of the crew and Nami’s obsession, something should have come of it, you also dropping hints via that new compass with the seal

Little East Blue😂 That's hilarious, but the mention of Cobra and the newspaper makes me wonder how far their antics have spread

Unfortunately, Eternal Poses have a canon explanation. Whatever bullshit that exists in One Piece that gives individual islands magnetic signatures apparently gives them UNIQUE signatures. Eternal Poses are simply tuned to specific signatures rather than the closest one. Effectively treating them more like magentic poles. Thus One Piece treats them as 'science.' Kaya's new design, on the other hand, is based on her studying Vivre Cards (well one, specifically Ace's). Those are tied 'to the life force of their owner.' Which implies a more spiritualism explanation for how they work. Kaya essentially figured out how to make a beacon seal that lets out a specific signature/pattern of spiritual energy, and another set of seals that drag a compass to point at that beacon.

Fairly far :-). Even in canon, they occasionally show far distant islands getting news about the Straw Hats. Presumably in part because the bit about Big News Morgans given zero fucks about attempts to censor him is canon. He's an underworld figure and occasionally lets the WG bribe him into printing stuff they want, but he's canonically printed stuff they tried to force him not to. Even besting a Cipher Pol agent sent after him on one occasion.

I always end up forgetting how savy that bird is😧💪🏼

Interesting island, I never watched any filler when I did watch the anime so it's nice seeing new OP stuff. Btw I get that this is a island full of people from the East Blue but does none of the crew find it concerning that landmarks specifically important to them are so casually represented here? Like Kaya's mansion for example can't be that well known. Tyftc!

Nice little reentry into the Grand Line. I'm looking forward to seeing what else they run into during the timeskip. Regarding navigation, you have a point, but it's not that simple. I'll avoid infodumping and rabbitholing unless asked, but the short version is that the method you suggest would work, so long as the ship is sufficiently far from the Eternal Pose's target island that its relative angular position isn't changing quickly. That really only matters though if the ship has a charted course and target, although using it to try to set a standard Log Pose is a good idea. As for using 3+ Eternal Poses as a pseudo-GPS, that would only work if the distances between the target islands were known to a fairly high degree of accuracy and precision.

Is it normale that chapters 86 to 88 are missing?

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Establishing a position to high precision is stupidly easy. So long as you can measure distance traveled you can triangulate with a few measurements, a little time, and some math.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

*shrug* It was a bit heavy handed on the filler author's part, but not that weird for One Piece. It was brushed over in the episode, though it was mentioned that someone from Syrup Village lives there. Personally I have plans to use a couple of the obviously familiar thing in ways the filler didn't.

I'll start by saying that if you (or anyone here) have practical knowledge in this area I'll defer to your experience. I know the math, but my experience is geared towards satellite positioning and ground access, with a little research into GPS principles and potential alternatives (in that particular field, determining position is certainly feasible, but it's a nontrivial process in practice, at least considering the whole system). Other than that, I know bits and bobs of navigational theory and history. My first question is how are you measuring distance traveled at sea? Dead reckoning is certainly possible, but to my understanding its accuracy struggles in rougher seas and in areas with strong or unpredictable currents, as are common on the Grand Line. The best option is latitude and longitude tracking, both of which (afaik) require a view of the sun at noon, which isn't guaranteed in the real world, let alone the Grand Line with Eternal Day/Night islands, constantly overcast climate zones, insane storms, etc. (I'll grant accurate chronometry for longitude to exist in meaningful form, given the schizo tech in One Piece it's certainly possibly, although how widespread is another question). With that having been said, given that Den Den Mushi exist, it would actually be possible to determine relative distance between islands using lat/lon calculations on the islands themselves, although it would require a collective effort across those islands. That just feeds back into the underlying issues, though. Even if a set of islands commission such a work, it only matters broadly if they choose to (or even can) distribute that information broadly. Even then, knowing position relative to a set of reference points isn't particularly meaningful unless the destination is also known within the same reference frame. Ultimately, I wouldn't be surprised if something like this system does exist in One Piece, but as a secret of the WG, used to move their Marines and operatives around, but restricted to hamper general ease of navigation.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Ah. I see the problem. You're only really familiar with semi-modern methods rather than sailing vessel era tricks. The entire concept of 'knots' as a speed was dirived from this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chip_log Which provides a simple way to measure speed at sea with just a piece of wood and a fair bit of rope. Once you have speed, distance is just speed x time. Which could be measured with something as crude as a sandglass. Once you have those, and even a bare hour or so of calm seas (which do exist even on the grand line) to get each measurement. Compare two or, preferably at least three, measurements in a triangulation calculation and you get fairly precise location fix for a stationary point. After that it genuinely becomes easier to navigate via an array of Eternal Poses than it would be by regular compass or even Satellite positioning (if doing the math by hand). Having multiple FIXED points of reference makes the math relatively painless. Navigating by compass requires much more math and far more tools because you only have a single reference point, making everything very complicated and difficult to make accurate. Calculating even by satellite is harder, as the satellites themselves MOVE. Most GPS sats do two full orbits daily, so they very much aren't a FIXED reference point, making the math horribly complex. Having multiple FIXED locations you can get a constant heading from? There is literally no known system for that (at least to my knowledge) even on modern Earth. Eternal Poses provide that and would, frankly, trivialize navigation as a result. Oda unintentionally made a sea that is, quiet possibly, easier to navigate on than any other known body of water in existence has ever been. When he was trying to do the opposite.

twilightwanderer

Fair enough, I bow to your experience ;P I'm too used to systems where everything is moving, positioning is often done by strictly observational methods, and even relatively fixed reference points aren't really (satellite-based systems even have a whole added layer of complexity in that they're usually moving fast enough for relativity-induced time dilation to be a factor). My primary historical reference frame is the South Atlantic, which afaik only became consistently navigable in the early modern period using extensive latitude calculations, current studies, and shipbuilding improvements (mostly by the Portuguese in the 1300-1400s). I know the Polynesians, Scandinavians, and various cultures sailing the Indian ocean all had sophisticated navigational techniques well before that, but I'm not familiar with any of them beyond a couple very surface level tidbits, or with practical details of even contemporary sailing, let alone Age of Sail or premodern sailing. Thanks for the explanation and the patience (and the awesome fics :D )

…thought I already sent this one MUCH earlier since this is just one edit but uh… Oops. Edit 1: Those that didn’t “so surrender”… Those that didn’t “surrender”…
