Time for the first release of the month! Just one chapter this time, but it's 5,500 words, so the same rough word count as usual for the 1st of the month. There just really wasn't a good place to break the chapter in two, which is what I would normally do if it ran that long. Anyway, I'm decently happy with how it's turning out so far, I'm trying my hand at another One Piece staple with it. Though I'll save explaining that for the author's notes so I don't spoil anything!

As usual, the new stuff is attached here in various formats, and I'll be posting new Master Files in the Pinned Post. I'll also put author's notes in the comments below when I have time. Enjoy the new chapters of Halfway Broken!

Note: Post image is not mine, it is by Winfrith. Or, well, edited by them, as it's an AI creation. A good enough one that I don't mind pointing out who made it though.

Chapter 94 A/N 1: A quick explanation of what I meant in the post text, more than an author's note, really :-p. One of the 'staple' adventure types of One Piece is 'fetch the weekly gimmick,' which is something I haven't really done. Previously, Luffy knew too much, or the crew was too strong to need to bother with such things. Here, I'm tentatively dipping my toes into providing that type of One-Piece-like story element. Where they can't easily take on the Crisis of the Week (or island, really), without seeking out some tool, key, mystical thingy, person, plant, or what-have-you. In this case, I provided an enemy who is simply so LARGE, durable, and capable of regeneration, that they need to look for an alternative solution. Which is what the weaker members of the crew will be doing next time, while the most powerful four are busy keeping the Thraax contained. I'm not sure I'll do this sort of thing very often, but I felt making one of the Original Islands follow this particular One Piece trope was worth an experiment. A/N 2: Yamato just doesn't feel right without her giant Club of Doom (it even had a name, to my surprise, Takeru). So she's regained a Club of Doom in Takeru II, which will be part of her ongoing upgrades during the timeskip, as Luffy and others figure out how to made it more deadly. A/N 3: I don't know Japanese and I'm terrible at attack names. Nojiko's attack might be butchered nonsense.

I think there's a POV issue in the last section. The first paragraph suggests it's Vivi POV but the last paragraph or two makes it seem like the POV is asking Vivi for something.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

I don't think so? Vivi was still the POV, Hina was just asking her to do something, and the last paragraph shows her internal thought about the gesture of snapping her fingers for the gate being completely unnecessary.

I love it!!! Great chapter! Can’t wait for more!

Thanks for the chapter! Integrating subtle information on the Strawhats’ improvements within the fights was a great way to show their current progress (you have done it this way before, but I thought it was especially well done in this chapter!) I also really enjoyed Strawberry’s brief point of view, and I would really love to get his POV once more once the drake is defeated to get an outsider perspective on the Strawhat crew’s current strength. All of them showed considerable strength and competence (especially the top 4, Nojiko & Kaya), and I’m sure that it is beyond the expectations of the marines. They are a very scary crew already! Btw, did the marines manage to kill/defeat the fire and acid cultists by the time the chapter ends? Because it wasn’t mentioned (and the Strawhats didn’t step in to help), but marines are present at the end of the chapter so I was wandering whether it was just off-screened, or if the mentioned marines are ones that simply stayed out of the fights?

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Thanks! Yeah, I'm trying not to let the story become one long training montage during this section, so showing off improvements during fights is important, as well as somewhat true to One Piece, where they are only very rarely shown training abilities and just pull them out of no where most of the time. I picked Strawberry specifically for a reason ;-). We don't know a lot about him, but what we do know puts him more in Garp's school of thought than the Absolute Justice people. Which makes him a good outside perspective when encountering the group, which is something we haven't really had up to this point. Not up close, anyway. I'm glad you enjoyed the inclusion :-). Yes, the Marines managed to finish those two Cultists off. As you said, I sort of off-screened it, so as to not oversaturate the update with too many different combat scenes. The Marines have several Captain level officers in this group, but none of them are really 'named' characters, so I didn't feel they were interesting enough to show, but that they would be strong enough to handle the cultists given time and only two of them to fight.

Camille

Ah that makes sense, although a comparison on how easy/hard it was for the Strawhats versus the marines would have been nice. The Lightning mask forced Kaya to use her OP devil fruit to kill him, and even though he was boosted by Luffy’s lightning, his defence seemed strong. Nojiko’s new move also seemed very powerful and the Acid mask was ganged up on by Nojiko, Brook, Sanji, Hina, Robin and Vivi. That’s an enormous amount of firepower and makes it hard to believe that non named marines could have taken care of two of them with (seemingly) no real fuss. When you say multiple captain level officers, do you mean post-timeskip Tashigi and Koby approximate power level? The Marine Captain rank is all over the place in terms of power level lol 😅 Anyway it was just a thought I had that caused slight confusion to me when I read the chapter. I really enjoyed this chapter though I promise! xD

The Foreign Traveler

Didn’t see any potential edits for this chapter as far as I could tell! Speaking of, good chapter as always Novus!

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Eh. The Captain Rank is all over the place because there seems to be a dramatic split between the Blues and Grand Line Marines of that rank. All of the Captains on the Grand Line have something going for them. A Devil Fruit, Haki, the Rokushiki, or just raw combat ability via Swordsmanship or similar. Realistically, in the crew and aboard the ships directly answering to a Vice Admiral, there are almost certainly one or two additional Devil Fruits, a few Rokushiki/Haki users, and some high-level weapons users. Since the Marines also brought more numbers along, emptying the fleet at Drakestone of high-level fighters with the intention of confronting an extremely powerful Pirate crew, they were able to to pile onto their two reasonably well. Unlike the Straw Hats, they took loses doing so, which will likely get mentioned in the remaining chapters for this island later this month. It just hasn't happened yet. There was already a LOT crammed into a single chapter here. Even a long chapter.

Camille

Thanks for the clarifications! Makes complete sense :)

I completely forgot Kaya even had a devil fruit for some reason especially one as op as the sick sick fruit. It's honestly probably a good thing story wise she doesn't like using it offensively because she could probably just counteract the drake's regeneration with a bunch of diseases.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Possibly, though it is using Haki, and I'm not sure how Haki would interact with something like the Sick Sick Fruit. That's a bit of an interesting question, actually. The Sick Sick Fruit can do weird things like create a gender-transformation 'Sickness.' So, how much of what it does is clearly Devil Fruit power that can theoretically be blocked, and how much of it is regular disease?

BPellet

Late reply from me, but the interactions between certain devil fruits and haki has always been weird. For instance the mera-mera obviously burns people but those with haki can resist being burnt, but iirc they aren't resisting the effects of being near a very hot flame (sweating etc). With the sick-sick fruit though according to the wiki intense haki use can resist/break it's diseases by creating antibodies, so presumably everything from the sick-sick is counterable if sufficient haki is used. If that's true though it's a weaker fruit than I thought it was, but then again even Roger died from disease so maybe not.
