Edit: Alright! I've gotten the list I'm using sorted out for now! Thanks for all the help, folks. Don't hesitate to keep suggesting people I might not think of, though ;-). There will be future recruiting beyond the initial dossiers, as well as the need for encounters with other heroes in general!

Hey all! I need your brains ;-). No, I'm not going to eat them, promise! I'm working on Why Was There No Truck!? and running headfirst into a problem. Specifically, male characters. I've wanted to add at least one or two male characters to the Overwatch team, to avoid it steering into Harem territory. But I'm legitimately having difficulty rounding up possibly compatible individuals from various superhero media. In example, I just finished trawling through the various X-men teams and found like...10 secondary female characters I could use. In turn I found two male characters that seemed vaguely compatible. I'm going to keep looking through Marvel, along with the other universes in the Amalgam, but I realized it was taking forever and...well...a lot of you have consumed just as much or more superhero media as I have ;-). So I figured I'd outsource for some brainstorming.

So, setting some qualifications here:

-----------------

1) No MAJOR characters. Alyssa is putting together a team of largely secondary or inexperienced characters. If they have their own comic run? Or were the leader of a team? They probably don't qualify. No Robins, Wolverines, or Armsmasters, in other words. People like Spyke (Evan Daniels - X-men Evolution) or Cyborg (Teen Titans) are fine. But Robin from Teen Titans or Cyclops from X-men Evolution would be too 'major.' Essentially, no truly 'core' characters. Even Cyborg is honestly pushing it and is only viable since the Titans have already been semi-established as not actively existing.

2) No ridiculously overpowered characters. They already have Alyssa as a power house, and Gotham doesn't really need raw power most of the time. Younger versions of characters that could BECOME powerhouses are fine.

3) No ego cases. This is actually what caused the vast majority of the viable male X-men to be nixed. Many were in leadership roles and thus nixed, but a lot more of them were/are serious ego-cases that neither I nor Alyssa want to try and deal with regularly. Examples: Bobby Drake, Pyro, Alex Summers, Gambit. Seriously, a lot of the male X-men seem to have ego problems, now that I'm looking through them T-T.

4) It needs to be reasonable for them to actually be in the United States. This, unfortunately, eliminates most of the male MHA cast.

5) Team players are a must. Most versions of Spiderman, for example, is absolute ass at being a team player despite actively trying at times. He just seems to be genuinely terrible at it. Though he'd fall afoul of the 'Major Character' issue too.

Addendum: I've established that not everyone is on the same Hero/Villain side as their canon selves are, so minor villains who could have gone a different way are also possible options.

-----------------

Get your suggestions in! If any of them fit, they might appear. Either as an outright recruit, or at least on the list of those that the original trio considered for recruitment...

Peter K

Maybe it's just that your suggestions made me think about X-Men, but would Colossus work?

Aojae

I mean, its AU, so you could always gender flip a female character if you can come up with them

Orchamus

Cyborg could be a good option, or mayhaps a younger Forge from X Men. Or Gear I think he was called in Static. Someone who Alyssa can collaborate tech wise with.

Sean

You might have an easier time pulling male villains into Overwatch. There are so many mad scientist back stories where the only reason they aim for villainy is because they lose funding or can't make a commercially viable product with their research. Plus the more science minded the initial team is the easier it will be to jumpstart the science division once they clean up Gotham

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Huh, he's not a bad idea. I'd have thought of him as too senior, but that doesn't NEED to be the case, since this is an AU. If I went with a younger version of him it might work...

Liger98

You could add Leet and Uber from worm. Leets power is that he can prototype anything once and Uber practices a skill for a little bit and is suddenly skilled in that subject. They are mostly used has joke villains but you could just have them be video game themed heros instead, and has a team that every once and awhile works with others they can do team work

Fireblade974

I don't know to much about him as I haven't read worm (i just know it from fanfics and wiki reading) but kid win might work.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Eh, I tend not to do gender flips. There's a lot of adjustment needed if you do, while risking upsetting their actual fans. With as many universes as I've tacked into the amalgam it shouldn't be needed, even if I'm struggling to slog through the options.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Forge I've already quietly slotted as being the one providing the X-men with their patents, which were mentioned by Nocturne as how the X-men partially funded themselves. But yes, that was a lot of the idea with Cyborg.

Peter K

Also, maybe Cannonball/Sam Guthrie? Or Anole/Victor Borkowski

SpiritFoxAlf

Senior can be good to have in a new team as long as they aren't to overbearing

Novus's Fanfiction Works

I'm almost entirely unfamiliar with the Overwatch cast. I really only know a handful of them, mostly from crossovers or a bit of wiki diving. Though you DO bring up something I should have mentioned (I'll tack on a quick note in a moment) in that villains are 100% an option. I've already established that some Heroes are Vilnians and some Vilnians are Heroes in this AU.

Vick

Waterboy from Dispatch.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Ohhh, that's an idea, actually. I've seen them used quite well a few times. I like that one! Will almost certainly get at least a mention in the options the team comes up with. Thanks!

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Hmmm, you're right, he's a decent possibility. I'd have to do a bit of research on him, I think...

Novus's Fanfiction Works

The versions of Cannonball I remember failed on the Ego point :-(. Anole/Victor isn't familiar to me, I'll look into him.

Maglad

Edward the duck, from marvel. Detective chimp from dc comics.

Mr Fox

Yeah the problem your running into is that most well known and developed male superheroes are either a protagonist or another male heroes lancer hence the ego issues

Allute

Zachary Zatara (dc), cloak and dagger (male female duo, marvel), bronze tiger (dc), stingray (marvel)

Justin Archibald

Darwin from first class. Interesting character killed in the movie but an AU doesn't need to follow.

PlagueSpreader64

I'm just going to state the obvious, and possibly slightly unhelpful, opinion that OCs can work. I'm not sure what the status of hydra or weapon x or whatever other organization is but you bet there were tons of powered individuals "disappeared" and ultimately died as a lab rat. We got canary, tamaranian mc, and... oh it was nightstalkers female child? I can't remember what everyone can do well enough to give recommendations for an OC power ser.

lionman360

There is a minor character in Worm called Browbeat that isn't really fleshed out besides his powers. A manipulateable force field and self-biokinisis that work synergisticaly could be interesting from both meatshield/muscle and infiltration perspectives. also really quickly joins the wards voluntarily so team player and is rather unique to be a natural trigger and preferring to de-escalate situations.

Ototsu_Yume

A lot of the Worm cast would work well, just need to make them less edgy since Earth Bet is hell on earth and messed with pretty much everyone complete with the conflict engine that shards are. You could even bring in a superhero couple in the form of Assault and Battery. (Assault was a villain at one point too)

Derek Palm

What about Elixer (Joshua Foley) or maybe Cable

Dominique Brassel

Right my first instinct is to tell you to not add any male characters and embrace the yuri harem team.... please 🥺........ Pretty please 🥺........ If we talk general hero media here are my suggestions under protest.... In no particular order for now: -mirio from mha -twice from mha -clockblocker(Dennis) from worm -uber & leet(duo) from worm -Astolfo(he could work as one) -Northstar(gay) from marvel Those I think could fit of the top of my head.... I am partial to Uber&L33T or Twice if you are so cruel to destroy my/our horny yuri team fantasies...... There are a lot more underused female characters that could e on the team instead......

Novus's Fanfiction Works

*snort* I actually do intend them to run into Detective Chimp at some point. But he's 100% a lone operator, rather than someone interested in more than temporary teamups.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Huh. I did not know Zachary Zatara existed. Going to have to read up on him. Cloak and Dagger are a bit more complicated than I want to add at the moment, since they come as a pair. Bronze Tiger and Stingray are ones I will have to read up about. Thanks for the suggestions!

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Hmmm, he's a bit too similar to one of the female characters already added to the possibilities, but I'll keep him in mind if I choose not to use her...

Novus's Fanfiction Works

They can, but given the SHEER number of options from a large amalgam like this, I think people would prefer to see known characters.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Oh! I forgot about him entirely! I'm wanting to add some Worm characters here and there. So even if he doesn't make the team list, he's a great option to add a some point. Thanks for reminding me he exists ;-).

Novus's Fanfiction Works

I'm really only familiar with Worm from fanfiction, and the bulk of the characters that appear in fanfiction tend to be the female cast. Also, since the Protectorate exists here, at least some of the known Worm characters will be filling spots in Protectorate teams. Assault and Battery are certain a pair I can see interacting well, but I probably won't put them on the actual team.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Not Cable. Don't want to mess with the time travel nonsense anytime soon :-p. Elixar might be a possibility. I remember having a sort of negative view of him so I skipped over him, but if I remember right that was only the later versions of him, with the young versions being a lot better...

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Mirio and Twice don't have any reason to be in North America. Clockblocker annoys the hell out of me. Uber and Leet are a distinct possibility though. Not sure who Astolfo is? There's like five of those from different series. Northstar is someone I dismissed because I want him and his sister to currently be in Alpha Flight :-).

Derek Palm

Yea he wasn't even originally gold skinned he only turned gold after he had to heal himself one time

Keht Jelicho

I forget, are the Fantastic Four an established team in the Amalgam? Even if they are just thought it would be cool for Ben Grimm/Thing to at the least have an eventual Cameo/short term collaboration. "Secondary Male Character, non-ego case" just made me think of Ben Grimm, he just seems like a genuinely Good guy, heck pretty sure its even canonical that he sees a therapist. (Plus I have a low-key soft spot for many characters that have a tragic aspect to their powers, like Ben and being stuck as the Thing, and Rogue unable to have physical/skin contact, so if Alyssa finds a way to help them and others that would be something I'd enjoy seeing). Also, have you considered possibly gender bending some of the suitable secondary female characters? It is a weird mash up Amalgam world, so some people having different genders than the respective source material canon would seem to be just another aspect (after all, there are multiple versions of Marvel and DC that actually *have* gender swap versions of characters. Saying that the Amalgam world also includes some versions of characters that come from one of the branch versions of Marvel/DC or in other words that Marvel/DC, or other relevant sources, are not just mashed together, but are each themselves a mash-up of various *versions* of their different 'verses even before mixing with *other sources* to make the Amalgam. Is Forge from the X-men one of the possibilities there you mentioned? I honestly cannot remember much of the character, other than that I have the impression of an anti-social inventor/"tech guy" and while that has overlap, and he isn't necessarily a good fit for a Team member, could he work as a background/secondary character for your story in a support role? Not really a super-powered/enhanced/etc person, but what about Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. show's Leo Fitz, though really I like the "FitzSimmons" dynamic with Jemma Simmons. There is some ego, but they do help balance one another, and the two as a couple would help having team members that wouldn't lead to the Harem route. Also I am led to believe that there is a good bit of character development and growth in later seasons (I stopped watching AoS after a few seasons). Would one of the Ghost Riders work? I know there have been multiple versions (many with their own comic runs, but I think if have seen a number of times where they show up in another hero's comic run for an issue or two). Or if not one of the canon/mainstream Ghost Riders, wasn't there a series of "what-if" type comics where different characters ended up as a Ghost Rider (I do know there was a Punisher-Ghost Rider, and I believe that or A version of such somehow ended up raising a baby Thanos into a "Good Guy" Thanos or something). So, kinda like if you wanted to play around with Symbiotes/Venom (or bring in the Ultimate Marvel man-made V.E.N.O.M. origin, possibly a "perfected" version if Alyssa creates it/acquires it/steals and fixes/upgrades it) Ghost Rider (or, again, Symbiotes) become a possible way to give a normal/non-powered secondary character powers in order to become a team member. Heck, imagine Dopinder (taxi guy from Deadpool movies) ending up enhanced/powered. Or a Sorcerer Ned Leeds. Or heck, I liked will Smith as Deadshot in the first Suicide Squad movie, wanting to be there for his kid. And in the Amalgam world there is the precedent of the Black Widow herself as an example of bringing someone in, so maybe consider him/that version of the character? Oh! Wait, the Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy animated series (I haven't watched much and its been ages) it introduced a ton of obscure/minor Gotham villains. See if any of them would fit. I just Really want to see how Batman would react to not only someone New, and Powered, moving in on "his" turf, actually getting things done/getting the city cleaned up, but *Also* have them recruiting/turning some of His (batman's) Rogues Gallery into Hero's that help clean up the city. (If nothing else, having some of the Mob/Crime Families in Gotham see that the momentum is starting to change, and thus looking to go legit/actually helping their neighborhoods and protecting the city/giving out aid. And Bats doesn't trust them. I never really watched it, but wasn't there a Spiderman/ironman/marvel shared world cartoon series a while back where there was an .. Avengers academy? Maybe a Shield Academy? Where various would-be heroes got training and were taught how to work in teams/control their powers? That might be another source to look for background/secondary characters. Heck, go full oddball. And base a character off the myth of Fred Rogers (of Mister Roger's Neighborhood) being a former Spec Ops sniper. Have a character that has a day job/cover identity of a children's TV show host, and the secret identity of a street level protector/vigilante that goes out to protect/keep his Neighborhood safe. (Heck you could even tweak things enough to combine this idea with the Suicide Squad Deadshot- Floyd Lawson retired as a Mercenary when his daughter was born, and ended up somehow becoming a children's TV show host by day, but by night he goes out to keep the streets of his neighborhood safe and clean for his daughter Zoe.) Maybe have a Blue Lantern Ring find someone in Gotham *because* Alyssa does enough to actually kindle enough hope for things to actually get better in Gotham (/on earth in general?) that stand up against a villain not from strength of will to face them and fight, but out of a complete belief in and a sincere hope for a better future. Maybe even throw in some "talk no jutsu" where they redeem/convert the villain as part of the origin or a signature of how they approach things? (OH, Not sure how I feel about this, but just had a strange idea for a "what-if" scenario where Harleen Quinzel doesn't get driven mad but instead actually gets chosen by a Blue Lantern Ring when she doesn't succumb to the Joker and consequently somehow actually manages to convert the Joker into something more like an anti-hero unleashing his insanity one various villains. He put smiles on the publics faces by making villains and thugs into laughingstocks and he targets those who make people sad. That is just too weird to keep going deeper into, I am just glad my brain couldn't fit a way to make Joker a Hreen Lantern somehow too, what with how Blue Lanterns boost Green, even if green is kinda Joker's color.. or one of them. Anyways....) Have you ever watched RWBY? Jaune Arc seems like the kind of character you might be looking for (not that he's from any version of America let alone Earth), so if you find an obscure enough character that you can give your own interpretation for (kinda like Daphne Greengrass or some of the other barely mentioned characters in Harry Potter) then you might be able to reference/base the characterization off Jaune Arc's character. Or do something similar where you take a character from a Source that doesn't fit in the Amalgam world and define/create/portray a minor character that Is In the Amalgam as if they are based on the outside character. (For example, say you want Alyssa to have a Team Member with a character similar to Jeff "Joker" Moreau and/or Kaidan Alenko or some other guy, then you just need to find some minor/minimally developed character that you can make your own version of and base it on the person(s) from outside fandoms that, character-wise, would be a good fit for Alyssa's Team, even if they aren't a good fit Setting-wise.

WhatAFungi

I’m thinking Trickster from the Travelers. He has a really interesting power, and his mind wouldn’t be too fucked because the endbringers are nurfed in your story. Other interesting ones would be like, aqua lad from young justice, any of the flash sidekicks (like Impulse), maybe a magic user from Dr. Strange? I find the concept of tinkers super interesting, so any of them could be cool. I bet you could get a ton of mileage from Kidwin.

WhatAFungi

You forgetting about him is one of the running jokes in the fandom, the joke being that he has a stranger power. So… who were we talking about again?

SpiritFoxAlf

Any of the guys from OG Overwatch fit the Bill?

Urbane_Bomber

Owlman (DC - outsiders), Coldwater (DC - Elite), Puck (Marvel - Alpha Flight)

White Neko Knight

Winston! From OW. Save the poor Gorilla from an evil layer. He's also a techy. Wuyang could be fun, but I'm not sure how you'd get a Chinese character to Gotham. Genji could work, cyborg ninja assassin, but he seems the type to be recruited by Shield. Wait this is a cyberpunk universe yea? Get Jakie Wells and male V. Jackie seems the type to lack onto being a Hero instead of an Edgerunner. He'd make a fantastic face.

Dominique Brassel

Mh well twice could be on vacation or something or he has moved to the US for whatever reason........ Mh sad that you do not like Dennis..... Astolfo from the fate series the pinkhaird femboy....... Kind of sad about Northstar but if you have plans you have plans...... Well I will be rooting for the gaming duo then...... You evil author depriving me of the yuri harem team.......

Patrick Flanagan

Spider-Man is out, but from his rogues gallery, Sandman could be a solid choice. Most of his retcons have his motivation being that he needs money because of his daughter's illness. Many times fixing that in fanfiction either by providing a steady high paying income or curing the daughter leads to him being at least neutral if not switching to good. He's also been in multiple incarnations of the sinister six, so most times he can be a team player.

twilightwanderer

Oh boy, a chance to rattle off semi-obscure comics trivia, my time has come. (NB: I haven't read all or even most stories containing these characters, so I'm going off of my limited exposure and general vibes for whether they pass the "No Assholes" and "Team Players" bars) First off, the most locationally appropriate: Lonnie Machin aka Anarky. More of an antihero, he did play support/man in the chair for Tim Drake during Red Robin, and he's basically Robin at home, with tech/hacking skills, and decent investigative and combat abilities. He did have a couple solo miniseries back in the 90s, so might fall afoul of the main character rule, and as a character requires an author willing to portray an ideologically motivated leftist revolutionary, so YMMV. DC's tough for this because they have fewer team comics and the powered characters tend to be stronger. Case in point, I had to go DC adjacent to get Richie Foley aka Gear and Adam Evans aka Rubberband Man from the Static Shock TV show (great show btw). They're basically poor man's Tony Stark and Reed Richards respectively, and even that might be too OP (Adam's effective immunity to gunfire and blunt force damage makes it tough for most Gotham enemies to hurt him). They've both shown that they can work together with other heroes (especially Richie as Static's partner), and I'd love to see one or both of them. I recognize they're tough to work in given they're pretty tied to Dakota City, and from a writing standpoint there's probably not much about them online without just rewatching the show, so I understand if they're out of the running, I just had to toss them in for the Kids WB nostalgia. Next up, from the various X-teams, there's Doug Ramsey aka Cypher and Everett Thomas aka Synch. Both offer potential as force multipliers with some interesting applications, both can be fairly easily throttled to an appropriate power level by how you implement their powers, and both seem like decent guys and team players. Sticking with Marvel but hopping over to Spider-Man extended cast, there's Hobie Brown aka Prowler, Johnny Gallo aka Ricochet, and Eddie McDonough aka Hornet. Hobie and Eddie are both tech guys and Johnny is mutant discount Spider-Man (boosted agility and a danger sense). Johnny and Eddie were on a team together and Johnny's worked with another team as well, while Hobie's played support for Spider-Man on occasion. I don't _think_ they fall afoul of the main character line, but Hobie did have a short miniseries, and both of Johnny's teams had short-run series, though he was never the lead and neither was Eddie for their shared team. Jumping to a much more open source, Worm's got a whole gallery of options for character/hero names and powersets, so long as you don't mind building off of throwaway references and Word of God extras. For someone with some actual established characterization, there's Theo Anders aka Golem. I don't think he'd be OP, and his experience growing up the unfavored son of a Nazi gang leader before turning hero once he got powers could make for an interesting fit, especially in Gotham. Finally, to go a bit more offbeat, there's Roscoe James aka Jack-in-the-Box III from Astro City. I think it'd be interesting to have a hero clown in Gotham, and he's pretty street level but with some decent legacy behind him.

Temujin

Here's my pitch for this Robert Baldwin aka speedball aka penance. A dumb teenager who was party of a team of other young supes who got a school full of kids and his team killed because he was more focused on his reality tv show than saving people. Having him join after that or after some time away would be cool as hell and he's probably my favorite minor non leader superhero.

Aragorn93

From the Xmen, I think Beast and nightcrawler meet your criteria. A lot of people are mentioning Forge as well. I should also say that I actually haven't read any of this story yet. I've been more interested in your other stories. However, I'm at the point where I think i should start reading it. With that being said, if there's already someone similar to Beast or Nightcrawler, then I guess you can ignore most of what I've written.

Robert Lemanski

Here's some American mutants that could be interesting: * Xmen's Leech: an AOE power canceller (that affects mutations and alien DNA and magic and everything in between), looks like a chameleon boy, was raised underground in a visible mutations mutant outcast group so plenty of story potential, started out with self-confidence issues due to being abandoned as a child but overtime became a brave and confident team player, and interestingly enough speaks in the third person. * Douglas Ramsey aka Cypher: the ability to understand and fluently speak all languages (codes, computer programming, alien languages, dead languages, demon languages, body language, sign language, etc) with telepathic immunity due to thinking in his own invented complex language, the son of an affluent lawyer, intelligent quiet and amiable personality. * Armando Muñoz aka Darwin: the ability to situationally evolve to theoretically survive any situation (even things beyond his power's ability to outright defeat- his power's answer to an angry Hulk was to instantly develop the ability to teleport then NOPE him to the opposite side of the planet), a really interesting power to write with in fics due to how creative the evolutions can get and some of them can last for a while while others can go away once the danger is passed (plus some evolutions remove him from combat which can make things worse for allies if they are not careful), potentially immortal, a Latino African American basically abandoned/disowned by his parents due to being born with a visible mutation, awoke his mutant power to make himself a genius in order to earn his mother's love by doing well on a test, has a calm thoughtful and observant heroic personality with dry humor added in but is a bit of a people pleaser due to fear of abandonment. Anyway, those are three X-men I think meet your requirements that could be pretty interesting to read (and write) about.

Robert Lemanski

Brian Laborn aka Grue from Worm is an African American 18 year old young man that has darkness cloud generation that can block all sound and light and electromagnetic signals and it later evolved to also have power cancellation, his father is a former boxer that taught him how to fight, his motivation in becoming a paid thug for villains was getting custody of his ADHD younger sister to rescue her from their druggy mother so if something can be done with that he'd not have much issue going straight. He also was team leader due to charisma and battlefield awareness and skills but had no issues working with his dysfunctional team members (such as a teenage girl with the power-induced psychology of a dog who can turn dogs into hulking monsters and a runaway teenage sociopath son of a mind-controlling cult leader) and he also had no problem having the girl with Sherlock-Holmes-on-crack superpowers be the one to come up with the plans before the fights so he can definitely work on a team. He's quite loyal to his friends and family, so could fit well on a team and wouldn't have the ego problems most team leaders have due to how he was fine working for a supervillain he never even spoke to that used said Sherlock Holmes teenage girl as a go-between to came up with the plans. An interesting power with plenty of potential who a team player that could be a reliable second-in-command or field leader, lacking any really major ego problems.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Believe it or not, I actually have considered Sandman. He would be VERY easy to swap to being a good guy. I decided I wanted to use him for something else in the end, though.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

*snaps fingers* Thanks for reminding me of Douglas Ramsey's name. I wasn't finding him anywhere, and it was bothering me. I actually have a use for him in the long run, Alyssa wants to recruit him for not-directly-team-related reasons. I won't spoil why :-p.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Beast is already established as a member of the main Avenger's team, and Nightcrawler is both a core X-Men in this and Talia (Nocturne's) father. So that would be awkward :-p.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Hmmm, having a hard time penning down where he should be in the timeline. His mother apparently co-stared with Mary Jane?

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Huh, I'm glad you reminded me of the Static X characters. Even Static himself might actually be a good choice, if I depict him early in his career. He becomes a power house eventually, but I remember him being pretty rough when he first started and hadn't figured out all his tricks yet. Cyper I have a plan for, and I'm not sure how useful Synch is without other mutants to Synch TOO. Alyssa's power wouldn't work with his, though Talia's would, and Dinah's is a maybe? Hmmm, Riochet and Hornet are interesting options, though I'd need to read up on them a fair bit more, as I'd never heard of them until now. I think Jack-in-the-Box would be lynched in Gotham :-p. The PR would be a disaster. Thanks for all the suggestions!

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Owlman seems to be a Wayne, which wouldn't work very well. Couldn't find Coldwater? Puck is a contemporary of Wolverine if a remember right, so he's a bit too experienced for a new team and likely already in Alpha Flight.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Ugh. I dislike Trickster, so probably not him. Aqua Lad would be someone Alyssa would nix because he technically reports to outside authority (he's effectively a soldier in Atlantis's armor, if on detached duty). He's most likely already in a JL connected Team. I think Impulse is a time traveler, don't want to mess with that. I actually am looking for possible magic options, but don't explicitly need a male for that role, and there are quite a few female magic users that might fit better. Kid Win is definitely a solid possibility.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Hmmm, I don't think I'm established the FF one way or another. They were a VERY early team in the Marvel timeline though, so they if they are in the Amalgam, they are likely a bit too veteran to get involved this early. I agree that Benn would make a great cameo though, I always liked him as a character. It's possible I'll gender bend characters at some point. At the moment I'm steering away from it as I'm trying to glue everything together without going TOO far and making everything overly chaotic :-p. Forge I have earmarked as being one of his older version, and being the one behind the X-men patents that Nocturne mentioned partially funding the team. Ah, Shield is actually around, so FitzSimmonds are probably active agents. Alyssa would probably try to kill any of the Ghost Riders she met. A lot of people see 'flaming skull anti-hero' and forget it's literally a demon possession. Given she DOES know that, she'd likely start the conversation by trying to drown them in holy water. ... ... ... Okay, I'm not picturing the idea of Harley having a Blue Latern Ring and trying to decide if it's awesome enough for me to deal with the chaos it would cause. For now, I'm trying not to reach out to non-super hero sources or make OCs. With so many universes in the Amalgam, doing that just feels wasteful, when I have so many options as is.

Matthew Robar

Are any of the spiders (spider-Gwen, miles, Kane, Ben Reilly) available? They’re generally good as mid-tier distractions and disruption in group fights, most of them have worked on teams okay, it’s just Parker who is a pain There’s cloak and dagger, or the members of the runaways Magik from the xmen could be used if she isn’t already established, she can only really use portals without risking corruption

xrunarx1

Jason Todd. Since he wasn't/isn't a Robin you cloud maybe do a story about him growing up in the ghetto. Serving as a local but small time vigilante/protector that first gets a camio, then later gets recruted when the team is looking to expand later after they are recognized as official hero's?

Cathbel

From the New 52 Teen Titans : Miguel Barraguan, AKA Bunker. A green lantern-like character, except his construct are made of bricks and purple. Also, Derek James, AKA Sideways. He’s got his own comics, but he also joined the Young Justice. Both are team players, and Derek is based out of Gotham.

Chaos Dude

Cypher I think... he learns allllll the languages. But he got stuck mentally and couldn't figure out stuff like BODY language for martial arts and magic being a kind of coding

Robert Lemanski

> Even Static himself might actually be a good choice, if I depict him early in his career. He becomes a power house eventually, but I remember him being pretty rough when he first started and hadn't figured out all his tricks yet. Oh my goodness, I have NEVER seen Static Shock in a non Static Shock specific fic, despite absolutely loving that show back in the day. Static would make an amazing member of the team.

twilightwanderer

Absolutely, Static probably would have been top of my list (okay, second after Tim Drake) if not for the No Main Characters rule.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Gwen is operating as a Main Avengers Team core member under 'Ghost Spider.' The others aren't around. I actually did end up using a member of the Runaways, as one option they have in mind. But I wanted Nico from that that group, for magical coverage ;-). Magik is...complicated. Mostly because we don't actually know how her mutant ability works if she hasn't been kidnapped and raised in a hell dimension. Her portals latched onto it as the dimension they went through because it was the first dimension she went too...

He might well show up at some point, but I'm trying not to load the team too heavily with Gotham characters, since that isn't a very good representation of the Amalgam nature of the story.

Hmm, I've got the list sorted by now, but those two sound like great encounters or recruits for later. Particularly Derek if he's from Gotham.

**MANGA SPOILER WARNING FOR MHA VIGILANTES LITERALLY ALL OF IT TO THE EPILOGUE** Well if you want to get an MHA character on the team might I suggest Koichi Haimawari aka The Crawler aka The Skycrawler the protagonist of the Vigilantes spin off? I know that on the surface he seems to violate several rules, but while he’s the protagonist of his source material that source material is a spin off showing a much smaller stage and he’s arguably not even the leader of his team (of a couple neighborhood vigilantes in over their heads so definitely not major in the grand scheme of things) even if he is the heart (so definitely not an ego case) Also, at the end of the Vigilantes story to avoid going to jail and become a hero he becomes a sidekick to Captain Celebrity, an American hero, and moves to the US where he goes from being The Crawler to The Skycrawler which gets him at least near Gotham. Could easily have him be looking to spread his wings a little bit after a couple of years with Captain Celebrity since even at the epilogue of MHA like 10 years after the Vigilantes epilogue he’s still only 33. Plus depending on how long he’s been in America in your take it could make for interesting character interactions since he’s still learning English so Alyssa would reliably be able to speak fluently with him (Tamaranean language transfer OP) but probably not anyone else. And while he’s a pretty skilled combatant with good mobility and decent hitting power he’s still quite vulnerable to a dude with a gun or some of the heavier hitters in Gotham so he’d be able to do good work because of his skill and tenacity without just stat checking the Rogues’ Gallery into jail

If you wanted he could also fit a bit of a not quite mentor role like Talia is but with different focuses since he’s been involved in some heavy crap but and hit some pitfalls but isn’t experienced enough to risk being the “grizzled veteran keeping these dumb kids from killing themselves”. Sort of a moderately older sibling that’s more “this is how I screwed up so don’t do this” rather than “here’s how to do this right for sure”. Honestly the best fit term is probably Senpai

I'm a bit late to the party, but rather than characters, I approached this from the perspective of roles in the group. The two big things that jumped out at me were some type of Cloner/Summoner to get more boots on the ground for dealing with large numbers of mooks, and someone specialized in Information Gathering/Investigation. MC somewhat has the second covered, but she is wearing a LOT of hats right now. I also noted that so far you have Marvel and DC characters on the team, while Worm and MHA have minimal representation in story yet so I am going to focus on them. MHA gives both Ectoplasm and Twice as cloners. Worm has Crusader summoning his ghosts. None of them have a lot of characterization though, which can be both good and bad. For Investigators, we have more options. MHA: Shin Nemoto with is Confession quirk/Tsukauchi Naomasa with lie detector. Koda Koji with animal scouts. Sasaki Mirai with Foresight. Lots of options here, even if Nighteye is an ass with an ego, he did start out as a sidekick to an overpowered brick so he has done this before. Worm is a bit lighter on possibilities because most of the options for this are female and you were specifically asking about guys. From later in the story than most fanfics get, there is Aiden Tate, the bird controller with a bud off of Taylor's shard. Victor the skill thief could also fit this role. Anyway, that's my two bits, looking forward to whatever you end up choosing!

Huh, I actually didn't know that his rebrand as Skycrawler was in the US. I'll have to keep him in mind either as a future possible teammate, or someone they might encounter!

Good thoughts :-p. I went with a similar 'role approach' with who they ACTUALLY recruit from the list of a dozen that Alyssa had dossiers on. But I went with filling the role of a Magic user and a dedicated Tech type. Alyssa honestly has INCREDIBLY good coverage of the information side, given who her skillset is from. So removing some of the 'hats' she was less focused on was how I approached it. While her powers have some magic-adjacent aspects, she doesn't have the traditional local magical education to deal with magic (and Gotham has a LOT of magic users and magical issues). Likewise, her mastery of tech is only accidental, with the Major Kusangi skillset having given her a lot of advanced knowledge and blueprints...but not a specific focus developing NEW tech. Freeing her up from being their primary expert on tech and magic lets her handle the information stuff pretty easily. With that and leadership of the team honestly being a good combination, since she has all the information to make decisions that way. As for who has representation, there will be a Worm character appearing on the team, and two Worm villains showing up in the upcoming chapters ;-). MHA I'm having a bit more trouble with, since few of the existing characters have a reason to be anywhere but Japan. Eventually, I'll likely use Pony and possibly Skycrawler, and make some OCs with Quriks...

A possible approach to get MHA characters over is that they came over to help with Grundy as a high level training exercise with a relatively low danger and predictable Endbringer and ended up making connections that led to them moving over.

I haven’t read through all of the comments here and your replies to them, but I was wondering about Ghost Rider (either Robbie Ryes or OC for extra inexperience) and the Hunter from the game Marvel: Midnight Suns. In that game, Robbie, Nico, Magik, and Blade are all part of the core team. And the Hunter is the self insert character that the player plays as in the game, so you’d not only be able to freely choose their sex but also you’d have a fair bit more leeway to give them whatever personality you want. I’d also suggest Magik, but 1) she’s female and the thought of them being male instead just feels weird to me lol, and 2) I did see below that you were hesitant to add her. (Personally I’d be in favor of her but I’m biased haha) I’m also throwing out there Wally West from Young Justice (altho I can see that being too much, not to mention that the team already exists lol), and Beast Boy from Teen Titans. Funnily enough, alternate versions of both characters actually show up in each other’s show lol. Also, if you just want sheer quantity of potential candidates to slog your way through for elimination, the season finale of Teen Titans where Beast Boy ends up leading a massive counterattack on the villains’ base had an absolute metric shit ton of characters show up for the final fight lol. (Actually I’m almost certain that that was the finale for the entire show, but it’s been a VERY long time haha) Hope this helps for future recruitment!

I had a thought. Both marvel and DC have vampires I think (I know Blade is Marvel at the least) why not also includes Hellsing and/or other such organizations (B.R.P.D. from Hellboy franchise?) dealing with a "hidden" aspect of the world. You could probably find some people from various organizations that regularly confront Vampires and/or demons that you might be able to write in a reason/way for them to be in Gotham or get recruited for Overwatch instead. They'd likely have training to work in/with teams, and the dark aspects of Gotham wouldn't necessarily be that off putting to them in comparison.
