Behold! The rest of this month's Halfway Broken slightly early! Honestly, since it was split more cleanly in half this month, I probably could have gotten this out even earlier...if everything involving the summit I'm sending them to hadn't been kicking my ass. Seriously, I finished the first 5k or so of this in like, two days. The rest took more like five -_-.

The little mini summit is something I think needs to happen in order to make some connections slot into place. Such as the crew actually meeting Jinbe and Hancock, with their canon intros having been diverted by kung-fu butterflies. Even just the setup is fighting me something fierce, though. I'm kinda half dreading writing the actual summit itself for next month. Hopefully it will be like Weatheria, where I get a spurt of inspiration to help flesh it out before then.

Anyway, this release doesn't entirely focus on that. It takes care of some last training perspectives, showing a bit of Nojiko and Hina's, since they weren't covered previously. I think Vivi is just about the only one left who I haven't spent time showing her personal training? Though in many cases we've only seen hints of what they are working on, not proper showings. After that, there's a bit where we revisit the fact that oh yeah, this is actually a gamer fic with Luffy going over a few new additions. No stat blocks, I promise :-p. Just some follow up on something that hasn't been touched much since they left the East Blue.

Of course, as implied by my comments of struggling with it, the set of chapters ends with them arriving on Rusukaina and meeting the various attendees. Though the Summit itself won't be covered until the next round of updates in March.

All in all, it comes to just shy of 8,000 words. Which, added to the 7,400 from the release on the first, makes this month's update set solidly chunky. As always, the new content is attached to this post in the various different formats, and new master files with the entire story will be added to the Pinned Post shortly. Author's notes will follow in the comments when I have a few moments to actually write them :-). Enjoy more of One Piece: Halfway Broken!

P.S. Artwork is either canon/wiki-sourced (first two) or ai generated.

Chapter 104 A/N 1: I'm sure some of you noted that Neethrax likely has access to Pop Greens. Frankly, I'm not sure I'm going do use them at all, but even if I do...I'm not really convinced the Boin Archipelago is worth visiting as a whole. So she presents an alternative way to get them, if I decided to introduce them. Frankly, I've never been overly impressed by them. A/N 2: Hina is a bit of a tricky one, as she's not shown really growing that much in power in canon. I think I've come up with something interesting for her to work on, though...

Chapter 105 A/N 1: I hope people like the new systems :-). Nami unlocked the Map, so it only stood to reason that the rest of the girls would trigger their own unlocks. I didn't want to make them super overpowered, that's not the type of Gamer Fic this is. But something subtly useful to keep the crew growing? That I figured fit pretty well with the way I've run his System from the start. More of an enabler than an outright cheat.

Chapter 106 A/N 1: Boa, much like Sanji and Usopp, is a character I have...mixed feelings about. Like them, she's so much of a wild caricature of a person that I find her difficult to like. As you might expect, given what I've done with those two, she's going to get...dialed back slightly, in my version. Not changed, per se, just having the dial on her run away, two-dimensional, character traits dialed back a bit. A/2: I'm going to be honest, Sabo and Jinbe are part of the problem with the Summit. I just don't have a good feel for either of them, and it's causing problems. I reallllyyy need to sit down and read some of the post time-skip manga...

Thanks for the update! I really enjoyed all of the separate pieces that were included in this release. Kuina got Conqueror’s! So so glad you did that since as I stated in a previous comment, I truly believe that since her goal to become the world’s strongest swordsman is now rock solid, her moment of weakness when she was a child with her questioning her abilities as a woman would not matter as that clearly isn’t the case anymore. Anyway, Zoro and Kuina getting the time to improve their conqueror’s haki during the timeskip is very reassuring in light of their future fights against the God’s knights and Elders. And you should definitely read post timeskip! Honestly I get that it’s a bit of a disappointment in some regards (disappointing character development for most of the crew). I personally stopped reading at the start of Egghead for multiple reasons (though I still read updates on what’s happening every so often), but you will definitely have an easier time writing the rest of your story if you’ve read the manga fully at least once. Funnily enough, although Oda dropped the ball hard on the Strawhats’ character development, he did a pretty solid job on the enormous cast of side characters in post timeskip so it should help you quite a bit with your own writing. Thanks again for the update! x

Personally I rather like Hancock, but that's more cause I figure she's so deeply traumatized that disliking he makes me feel bad. Honestly I wish Raleigh and Shaky had a daughter, have a new hottest in the world then. Honestly really glad for the summit, get to meet Jinbe from nally and he's generally a pretty chill guy.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

I sympathize with her, but I just can't really LIKE her, since she responded to that trauma by abusing others left, right, and center. Using her beauty to allow her to get away with almost anything.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

A lot of my issue with getting around to reading the Manga is that I was always a follower of the Anime, not the Manga. The anime, unfortunately, is absolute and utter trash post Fishman Island or so. The pacing went to hell in a way that makes Dragonball-Z look positively reasonable. I've been repeatedly told that the manga is better, but that still means I have to actually figure out where to start reading and spare the time to do so...

Bill Egghead

Honestly, I feel like the anime has really improved over the last year solely because they took off so much time for the manga to get far ahead. The animation became super high quality and they were adapting two chapters per episodes as opposed to the 7 pages it was before the hiatus. But from egghead to the end of Wano, the pacing WAS pretty bad.

Camille

I don’t watch the anime actually, I’ve only ever read the manga. But I used to read the chapter the day it came out without fail. My issues with One Piece were more the story actually. I was pissed by the whole Yamato thing. Either make her join, or don’t. But Oda changed his mind so many times it was so annoying. I also really really wanted a female combatant on the crew. She might still join in the future once both Zoro and Sanji have better conquerors haki so that she doesn’t mess up the monster trio, but it still pissed me off during the weekly reading. Kaido and Luffy’s last fight’s ending was also disappointing. Luffy’s Gear 5th is also annoying. I get the theme that Oda was going for, and it makes sense, but considering that I really dislike the side of Luffy that is reckless and doesn’t care about the consequences of his actions (so many things he’s done should have gotten his entire crew murdered a 100 times over, but plot saved them every time), having Gear 5th take that part of his personality and enhance it to the extreme was irritating. I also disliked Oden (unpopular opinion I know). Usopp’s character got further assassinated if that’s even possible. Telling Nami to just lie about Luffy becoming the pirate king when he had said the complete opposite in Alabasta was terrible. He should have been sniping the grifters, pleasures and waiters like a normal sniper (Izo being so fucking badass in comparison made it worse haha). And finally, Oda’s writing of women is supremely disappointing… I’ve always tried to turn a blind eye since I love the One Piece world so much, but Wano and Egghead seemed even more sexist than usual, and that’s saying something… Sanji spending half the final battle searching for prostitutes while his crew is fighting for their lives, and him going to perv on his female crewmates in the bathhouse and completely violating their privacy when Nami and Robin should be able to feel safe with their crewmate. Hiyori being useless and only there to simp on Zoro (a bit of an exaggeration since she was pretty badass as Komurasaki, but still), when Oda could have written her as a badass swordswoman, especially since she seemed to have the personality for it when she was a kid. He could have used her to further explore the in-world sexism in Wano that was previously shown by Kinemon and Kuina’s dad, that could have been interesting! Also Robin still not having Haki (and probably never unlocking it) leaves me seething. Big Mom being made into a joke with her amnesia etc. instead of the supreme threat that she is and should be was also annoying. Carrot and Wanda losing against Perospero and having a ‘man’ (Nekomamushi) save them was disappointing. Wano and Egghead’s outfits for the women were infuriating. There we go! I could probably go on for hours and I definitely missed some important points, but as you can see, I’m a bit too pissed right now to finish reading. I’ll read the rest of the manga once the series is over and I’ve had time to become less invested in the story so that it doesn’t hurt as much when Oda inevitably disappoints me again.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

@Bill Egghead The farthest episodes I've watched, purely for research before I introduced Yamato, were from the Wano arc. Which was an exercise in pure, unholy frustration that raised my blood pressure by several points -_-. It's possible it gets better, but I had the same issue when I did similar research-watching for Desserosa. Between the two, I developed an extremely negative opinion of where the Anime went post Fishman Island. @Camille Wow, tell us how you really feel :-p. Not that I disagree with you. I've always really liked One Piece as a SETTING, but had serious issues with a lot of the characters. Luffy annoyed the hell out of me almost from the start, but Zoro, Nami, and later Robin and Chopper, were all characters that salvaged things for me. Even early Usopp and Sanji weren't too bad, though they degraded horribly over the course of the series, becoming horrible two-dimensional caricatures whose only defining traits were 'Cowardice' and 'Perversion' respectively. Even Nami suffered a bit from that, with her negative traits (cowardice and greed) steadily amplified over her good points as the series went on. Honestly, a good chunk of what made me want to write Halfway Broken at all was the fact I felt almost all of the characters had been done a horrible disservice. Most of them had good fundamental bones (there's a joke about Brook in there, but I'll leave it alone :-p), but were actively devolved and simplified instead of grown. Robin and Yamato remain basically the only two characters I can think of in the entire series with actual character growth. MAYBE Zoro, at a stretch. Or some of those from the latter part of the series I'm not familiar with.

Camille

I’m so glad I’m not the only one to dislike Luffy! His selfishness has always been dislikable to me, and I’ve sometimes felt somewhat discouraged when people would respond with “you just don’t get One Piece as a story”. I’ve always felt that to be a weak argument, since I DO get why Oda is writing his story that way, I just disagree with the fact that I’m supposed to enjoy every aspect of it. Honestly I’ve looked through a lot of the available One Piece fanfiction to try and find stories where Luffy’s actions have actual consequences, and have not really found much that isn’t excessive bashing. I shouldn’t be surprised really, because the One Piece fandom is truly lacking in good quality fanfiction… Which is why I’m so glad you decided to write Halfway Broken! I really need to get started on my own fanfiction story honestly, I’ve just been procrastinating 😅 I have multiple story ideas, but I’m struggling to choose which one to go with first. I want to write a female main character though, and I would never see my character joining canon Luffy so it makes things a little more complicated, especially since the changes my characters makes would inevitably create an enormous butterfly effect I am a bit nervous to tackle. But I have zero interest in regurgitating the canon story like most other One Piece stories seem to do. I fully agree with you on liking One Piece as a setting but having large issues with a lot of the main characters. I think one of the main things missing for Zoro, which I don’t actually think we will get unfortunately, is Kuina’s view on women and strength being disproven. Her dying by falling down some stairs seems to have proven the weakness of women in Zoro’s mind, even if unconsciously. But if Oda wanted to choose this aspect for Zoro’s character growth, he would have probably done so in Wano with Hiyori… Robin is my favourite character in One Piece, with Trafalgar Law following closely behind her. (Hopefully this is not just me being shallow since they’re both unreasonably attractive lol) Sanji also used to be one of my favourite characters, but Thriller Bark and Fishman island ruined him for me. Wholecake island nearly redeemed him, and then Wano fucked him up again… But he’s a tricky one since he has had some serious character growth in some aspects of his personality, and huge regression in others (perversion obviously). As for Usopp, I never really liked him. I never found him relatable in any way. I actually feel insulted when Oda says that he will always be the weakest of the strawhats so that we as normal humans can always have someone to relate to on the crew. His cowardice is truly embarrassing. If I were to be in a world like One Piece personally, I would definitely want to improve my strength so that I can choose my own fate. Usopp is not doing that. And he is an insult to all human athletes, soldiers etc., who don’t behave like Usopp in the slightest. I think he’s the most disappointing, as his role on the crew is a combat role. A sniper is an ELITE role in the military that is widely feared by their opponents. Usopp is a fucking joke in canon, when he should have been right up there with Zoro and Sanji. I personally would have loved for his dream to be the best sniper in the world and surpass his father. His dream to become a brave warrior of the sea has severely handicapped him, as he can’t achieve that until the end of the story, so we are left with a useless waste of space for 99% of the story until he reaches his ‘dream’ of not being a coward... No one on the crew of the pirate king is supposed to be ‘normal’. And at least pre-timeskip Usopp was actually trying to improve! His fight against Luffy was badass and his character was developing in the right direction with every arc (Arlong park, Alabasta, Enies Lobby and Thriller Bark were highlights). But post-timeskip Usopp was just terribly written (Dressrosa and Wano were especially terrible). I actually found Nami cool in Wano, and I’ve always found her pretty badass, despite her slight cowardice sometimes which I try to ignore :) Sorry for the essays I keep writing… I’m just word vomiting my thoughts 😅

Camille

I fully agree, I love Boa Hancock because she is such a complicated character and has so much room for character growth that once again I don’t think she’ll get in canon. Her falling ridiculously in love with Luffy and becoming fully one dimensional in wanting to be Luffy’s wife was definitely not what I was hoping for… I think that some reflection on deep-seated trauma and how that trauma can result in a person hurting others in return could have been truly interesting. BUT, I’m starving for strong female One Piece characters so I’m honestly willing to give her quite a bit of slack, cause she’s badass haha

Camille

I actually think that’s some pretty good writing on Oda’s part. Weaponising her beauty to protect her, while that same beauty most likely caused part of her trauma in the first place is deliciously complex. And a previously abused person going on to abuse others is unfortunately quite common. What’s missing is the breaking of that pattern which represents growth in character through self-reflection.

Orchamus

Preach, it's why fanon Boa is so much fun cause a lot of the time we GET that character growth!! Vimesenthuiast did my favorite rendition so far

Camille

That makes sense, I found the pacing of the manga not bad at all, even Dressrosa, if you don’t have to read it week to week. My suggestion would be to start from chapter 598, the first chapter of the timeskip is a really solid starting point. However, I realise that’s a lot of content to go through so you might prefer to start with chapter 654 which is when the Strawhats ascend to the surface of the New World after Fishman Island. Though in terms of how many chapters you have to read, that’s probably not much better xD Good luck! It’s probably going to take you a while.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

@Camille Regarding the whole weaponizing beauty and such things? Yep, entirely believable and not at all bad writing on Oda's part. That's why I sympathize with her. That still doesn't mean I LIKE her, though. One doesn't abruptly like abusers just because you understand why they were abused. honestly, if she'd been given a proper chance to grow, she could have been an amazing character. But Oda doesn't really do that... @Orchamus Vimesenthiast's version of her is MUCH better than canon. Then again, his works are usually better than the canon that spawned them :-p. Stallion of the Line is one of the only One Piece fics I actually read.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Canon Luffy is...I wouldn't call him selfish so much as childish and utterly unwilling to grow up. He frequently does show selflessness on Big Things, which makes him vaguely tolerable, but his utter unwillingness to actual take responsibility for anything annoys the heck out of me. I'd honestly hoped that Ace dying was going to see a turn in his personality for the more serious, as it seemed like a really amazing Character Growth moment. Only for him to return after the timeskip basically unchanged...and then the Joyboy awakening thing utterly torpedoed any chance of him EVERY being serious. That bloody ass pull by Oda still enrages me, since it amplifies all of his worst and more irritating traits and calls it a power up >_<. Usually the only versions that have consequences end up being edgy and dark, which isn't fun to read :-(. Generally, the better versions of One Piece fanfiction are ones that outright replace Luffy with an insert. Not always a SI (my Luffy is a generic OC insert, not an SI, Vimes's Stallion of the Line inserts a more mature version of Ranma from Ranma 1/2), but an insert of some sort. Which is kinda telling about the quality of the original character. If the best way to get good fanfiction is to replace his whole personality... Having Robin as your favorite character just proves you have good taste. She is 110% my favorite, and would have been the sole pairing for my iteration of Luffy if people hadn't voted for a Multiship/Harem. Law I don't care for, but I haven't read/watched much of the content that has him, so most of my exposure has been through fanfiction which seems to treat him either as the Yaoi Love Interest of Doom, or the cool edgy author-wants-to-be-him. Both of which kinda leave me disliking him. His canon counterpart might well be fine. Yep, Sanji is polarizing for me, because his progress keeps being wrecked by the one-dimensional perversion. Part of me hates him, part of me likes him. So I split the difference and tweaked him with my version, while also not focusing on him as much so my bias doesn't color him too much. So, Usopp...I like PARTS of him, like with Sanji. His first arc is actually amazing, as it sets up a character who is genuinely trying (and succeeding with help) to overcome his fears and nature. Then he shows FLASHES of brilliance in inventing at times, like being the creator of the Clima-tact. Yet, like Sanji, he ends up ruined by a single overriding character trait. Again, I tweaked my version, but also didn't put as much focus on him, as I know he has fans that might lynch me if I colored him too much with my biases :-p. Nami's cowardice bothers me less than her greed...and her willingness to screw over anyone and everyone that isn't her crew if it will get her ahead. Even her crew, she fleeces for money regularly. Like immediately and unrepentantly decided to steal all the stuff from Weatheria, and 'loaning' Zoro pathetic amounts of money for critical equipment when he needed new swords at Loguetown. Much like Luffy, too, I hate that she never experiences consequences, always charming her way out of trouble. No worries about the essays ;-). I like discussion!

Orchamus

There was a other good one that did a fantastic job with her even if including the odd obsession with her fixation but the author went to jail then when they got out they only updated once. Good 400k though

Novus's Fanfiction Works

@Orchamus Yikes. That's a bad precedent. Maybe I should be more careful about changing her O.O...

Chris7A

That’s kind of what all kuja do though. They survive by raiding. It’s also implied they rape men to reproduce. Hancock is the extreme of that environment plus the trauma of her first outing into the real world being ending as a slave. She never knew kindness from anyone but Rayleigh (who is married to a kuja). She doesn’t start becoming a better person until she meets luffy. This proves she at least is capable of change.

The Foreign Traveler

Okay, looks like I won’t have to be worried about Hancock… Edit 1: …no one “by” Kaya… …no one “but” Kaya… Edit 2: …what he “weas” seeing… …what he “was” seeing… Edit 3: “If” might have been… “It” might have been… Edit 4: …at all “but” remaining… …at all “by” remaining… Edit 5: …the powers “at” be… …the powers “that” be… Edit 6: …listened “too”… …listened “to”…

Novus's Fanfiction Works

As always, thanks for all the corrections on the various stories :-)! They'll make their way into the next master file releases for each fic.
