Alrighty then! Time for October's Monthly Extra! It's a bit deeper into the month this time, due to it being oversized, being just over 16,000 words instead of the usual 10k. I felt that where it would have cut off at even 12k wouldn't have done justice to the concept, which is particularly important this time.

Why?

Because this is one of the options that may eventually replace Displaced Hero as a story in the Star Wars universe, that's why!

I've mentioned repeatedly that I'm trying to wrap Displaced Hero up by the end of February next year, though at the current progression rate I'm not 100% sure that will be a final deadline. Either way, I know Star Wars is one of the most popular settings I write for, so I'm intending to work on another story in the setting once Displaced Hero is done ;-). Of course, the question remains, where within the timeline to set the next story. As such, I have three basic concepts for new Star Wars stories that I want to write teasers for, to see which one you lot like the most!

Downfall of an Empire is simply the first of those three concepts. It starts immediately after the Jedi Purge, and follows a Corellian named Avix, who has partial knowledge of both future and past events. He's not a Jedi himself, but has a vague idea what is coming, and has decided the best way he can help the future Rebellion is to attempt to solve their biggest problem before they even get started...logistics.

Patterned somewhat similarly to Stripper With a System, Avix in intent on building up the assets that the Rebellion is going to need. Weapons, ships, bases, etc. Like Rylia he also has an advantage to use to help, but it isn't as dramatic an edge as hers. No Omniversal Marketplace for him! Instead, he has memories that may or may not be his, that teach him how to use certain forms of magic! Also, he has a sexy half-Zeltron accompanying him, who might turn out to be just as much of a handful as someone like Rylia or Zavra, in her own way...

Let me know what you think!

Hyperion

Nice! Any chance you’ll write something in BT at some point?

Aimee Hebert

I would love to read more of this story please. It’s great

PlagueSpreader64

Triple dog dare you to write a chatacter that follows the EU lore from the fall of the rakatan infinite empire to post yuzong vong. First chapter can be appearing and sneezing on a rakatan, getting immediately shot, and then being reborn somewhere. It'd only take 11 bajillion words. Easy. I'll tell ya what I think about this later when I can read it. Initial premise is promising.

Dominique Brassel

Well I have not read this on yet but the premise sounds a bit like Star wars battle mage on spacebattles so I will see what it offers when I'm awake again

TheCoolest7248

Gonna have him work with Luthen? I would love to see some Andor characters show up

Donan The Barbarian

Great premise, but given the MC seems to believe he's mostly the native personality and not an amalgamation of the past lives he'd use "Bantha shit" or "Sith Spit" in place of "bullshit".

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Good catch. I fixed a lot of similar ones like 'rabbit trail' to 'tooka trail.' But missed that one.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

I have not seen Andor, but it isn't impossible. If this one gets picked I might at least try to watch it since its set in the right time period.

I like Avix and Kori but I dunno how I feel about a second Clone Wars fix-it right after the last one. That might just be on me because I've read a lot of them. "MC can secretly do magic" doesn't really hit as well in Star Wars imo because of the truly insane Force-tech that already exists in the setting. Even so, a technopath and artificer duo could make some fun magitech bullshit happen but right now it seems like the story is more gonna be about Avix pretending to be a high roller while doing grand theft starship? Feels like the plot's already being pulled in a lot of different directions, idk

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Maybe if you keep rewriting enough of the BT wiki for it to be useful :-p. I legitimately don't know the lore well enough, and the one time I poked it to see if maybe I could figure something out, the various sites with lore information were awful.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

...It's not Clone Wars, though? This is set right after Palatine already won and declared himself Emperor. The Clone Wars are over and the Reconquest of the Rim is ongoing. So it's effectively closer to Legends Rebellion Era. Still, either way, as I said in the post, this is only one of three possible Star Wars fics :-). The option second is going to be a pre-Phantom Menace fic with a Jedi perspective. Which would admittedly be closer to a proper Clone Wars fix it, which even Displaced wasn't really. The third option will be either Kotor or Swtor Era, haven't decided on which.

Widget

Ack, that's my bad, polisci brain tells me the whole empire era is just an extension of the clone wars political situation so i tend to conflate them (and also I really like the cartoon so I tend to think of it and the first 6 movies as like "quintessential star wars") My post might have come off as too negative, I do truly like Avix and Kori a lot and likable protagonists is the most important part of me enjoying a story! The other two story options sound cool too, will have to see but I like SWTOR/KOTOR era a lot as well

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Ah. Most people split the Original Trilogy/Rebellion/Imperial Era into it's own thing. I'm a fan of SWTOR/KOTOR obviously ;-). All people of culture are! I admit I'm a little worried there may not be enough general support for that era, though. As less people know much about it.

TheCoolest7248

Dude, you are missing out. Its easily one of the best shows made in the past few years, and I'm not restricting that to star wars shows.

Treebeard Joshua

Thanks for the fic. I will be imagining the MC in Cowboy getup for the full romance of it all, Cheers!

TheZombieDoc

It's sad to see the expiration date on a series I enjoy, especially since it's what got me back into Starwars, but I'm glad you're already workshopping stuff that can scratch a similar itch.

carl hoffmen

This is really interesting I I'd like to see more

Tsorov

Damn, this is great! Reminds me of the beginning of Displaced Hero, where Izuku and Ayla were on their own, building their anti-slave operation. I must say, I'm a sucker for a good build up story. I would definetly take this as a worthy successor for displaced hero.

Snowy

I’m already curious how this story goes. Sounds like it’ll be a hard choice between the three.

Silvereagle21

Interesting. I might like to see more of this; though I would likely be more interested in one from the KOTOR/SWTOR era instead as those stories are a lot rarer. That said, I do want to say it would be nice to see a protagonist that was powerful at the start of the story or with a system/tool/power/special gift that allows them to be more powerful than normal. It would be interesting to see a protagonist who is weaker and only grows according to the normal aspects of the setting as opposed to getting special other talents. Just a thought.

Danielle Young

Can’t say I’m *super* interested in this as a story, would likely still read it because, well, Star Wars is fun to romp around in, but I’d be personally more interested in something of yours that either explored the darker sides of the force, or was set in an era before the clone wars? Also the interest is somewhat lacking in this instance ‘cause I tend to find male lead characters boring, and yet another human protagonist in Star Wars is… somewhat waisted potential imo. So no shade on your writing, Tis as good as usual just… not entirely my cup of tea

MultiverseCosms

I love the concept, it has legs. I am a little leery at the magic and how vague it is. I like abilities to have guidelines, or it becomes easy to have them do anything. I mean, I love OP chars, but within a framework. Love the use of Corellia humans and Booster. Would love a story set in the SWTOR era too, though without the Eternal Empire cruft.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

In this case the vagueness is intentional, as Avix is trying to piece working things together from memories which are still far from complete lives. He'll never be OP, though, at least not in a combat sense. Combat isn't the focus of this fic (I got waaaaaaayyyy too much of that from Displaced Hero). It will happen, of course, but mostly be restricted to fights with pirates or the occasional gun/ship fight when something going badly wrong, rather than being a major component of the story.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

I have zero interest in exploring the dark sides of the Force. I fall firmly on the side of 'yeah, that pretty much always turns you into an evil dick' and I don't write that. One of the other two concepts is planned to be set in the Kotor/Swtor era, though. Likewise, both of those are actually intended to feature non-humans. So you might like one of them better.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

...I'm a bit confused? You said you want to see a protagonist that was powerful at the start...then go on to say it would be interesting to see one who is weaker and only grows according to the normal setting? Those are kinda the complete opposite of one another...

Novus's Fanfiction Works

If I do it write, it should be :-p. If it's a hard choice, it means people like the concepts strongly enough to be invested ;-).

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Yeah, there are some shades of that in this concept, but it's intended to STAY that way. No giant fleet battles or invasions! I had enough of that with Displaced Hero, thanks! They can happen off screen!

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Oddly enough, those two stories are actually what inspired Stripper With a System, rather than this concept. I think I may have even linked them back when I first released Stripper's first chapters.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Understandable :-). The end of the Clone Wars was always where Displaced Hero was intended to end, though. Since I don't intend Palpy to abruptly make a comeback and win to deploy his Empire, pretty much all content post Clone Wars is useless up until the Vong invasion. Which...I HATE the Vong storyline, so that was never going to happen. Meaning I'd basically be writing a completely original setting with purely original content at that point, only without the ability to claim it as my own without Disney protesting :-p.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

lol. I'm not quite sure that fits, since he's playing the rich kid galactic racer, but whatever works for you ;-).

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Disney brutally murder any interest in anything Star Wars they made after the Sequels for me. The only thing I tried watching after those abominations was part of the Mandalorian...which was also completely awful. It stole a fuck ton of lore from the writers that worked on the Legends stuff, but brutally ripped most of the core out of it and replaced it was janky half-assed nonsense fluff.

Silvereagle21

Whoops. That's what I get for typing quickly. That was meant to say "wasn't powerful from the start". Sorry about the confusion on that.

TheCoolest7248

I do not disagree. RIP the Republic Commando series. I haven't watched any of the shows besides Andor since the abomination that was the Book of Boba Fett, and only seen clips of the catastrophe that was the Mandalorian season 3.

TheZombieDoc

Equally understandable, please don't take my quibbling as anything more than a fan scuffing their heel. The new work already seems promising and it's not even the only one. I look forward to more of your work.

MultiverseCosms

I'm fine with that. Combat is often the least interesting thing in this sort of story.

Justin Archibald

Very interesting start to a new Star wars series. I do hope we can save some of the Jedi that haven't died yet Like Jocasta Nu the librarian that tried to destroy the records of the galaxies force sensitive children and faced off against Vader, Shaak ti, Luminara Undili, and hopefully some supposedly dead but maybe good actors that played dead. Underdog Jedi that realize just how badly the order screwed up make for some good stories.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

At least a few are slated to survive where they might not have ;-). Avix already mentioned Felucia, for example, where a certain Togruta retreated with a grieving Maris Brood...

Novus's Fanfiction Works

And the hardest for me to write! One of the reasons I went with this concept first was that it's probably the firmest step away from combat heavy focus. Several other fics are currently fairly thick with combat, and while I CAN write it, it takes me 3-5 times longer to write a combat scene than it does almost anything else.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

Ah. That makes more sense. While, the second story is planned to be a Jedi Initiate pre Clone-Wars by several years, whose only serious advantage is a talent for Force Visions and being a shapeshifter. All in-universe powers, as it were. The Kotor/Swtor one is still a bit more nebulous, since I haven't decided which one I want to take a stab at. Kotor would be more straightforward, but that's not always a good thing for my motivation, given how much I prefer to deviate from canon. SWTOR would be better for that, but come at the cost of being far more combat heavy -_-. Likely as much or more than Displaced Hero.

Widget

I dont know much about Corellia, but here in Texas, running around in a cowboy getup typically means you're filthy rich. The hats are cheap but everything else is expensive as hell

Tsorov

Even better!

Mercury313

I like it. Haven't seen any extensive stories of this timeperiod and in this kind of setting without a waay too OP Character. It scratches an itch for me I didn't know I had.

MultiverseCosms

Another Vong hater! Their very premise doesn't fit Star Wars.

MultiverseCosms

SWTOR Jedi/Sith would curb stomp modern varieties, fight me. :-). I know Lucas has said otherwise, but way too much stupidity going around to accept that.

Daemonioros

Yeah this comment makes me really look forward to the next two concepts. Really like the idea of a non human protagonist in one of your fics. Though I do still rather like this concept and would gladly read it if this is the one you pick up after displaced hero. Really like the half Zeltron half elf character (because lets be fair Sephi are space elves).

twilightwanderer

Eh, I don't hate them in theory, and I think there were interesting elements to the series, I just think there was a LOT of editorial and authorial mishandling. (to be fair, Dark Tide: Onslaught was one of the first two Star Wars books I ever read and the series was being released during the first peak of my Star Wars fandom, so I'll fully admit some bias)

twilightwanderer

Welp, guess that makes me uncultured :/ I never played the games, I have a bit of general bias against SW games in general for rewriting lore mechanics to fit game mechanics, and a bit of specific bias against KOTOR for pretty blatantly ripping off Tales of the Jedi. I don't _hate_ KOTOR/SWTOR set fics, but I don't really seek them out either. If that ends up as the chosen replacement, I'm sure I'll still read it, though , and concept can always trump other considerations for me.

twilightwanderer

Cool concept, and interesting story thus far. If it gets continued, I look forward to Avix realizing that the real delay to forming the Rebel Alliance was politics and ideology rather than logistics (along with a hefty dose of the institutional paranoia required for any violent revolutionary group to survive past the first few weeks). I'm also looking forward to seeing the pre-TPM bunny and hoping it'll incorporate elements of the Jedi Apprentice series.

twilightwanderer

Edits: Kori is presumably half-Sephi, not half-Selphi. "going to me we" -> "going to mean we" (when discussing limits)

Dominique Brassel

So now that I have read this one let me say I like the idea...... But I did notice something..... Why do all your characters do the hidden/semi-hidden logistics/faction building besides Vicky who will probably do it at some point and Pokemon 2B........ Not that I'm complaining but it seems a clear trend in your writing....... Well regardless this seems like it could be very interesting but the mc will likely not see any dangerous or large scale combat if you play this one straight....... Also I definitely want to see what else Star wars you have ideas about.... Though personally I would like a revan era or old Republic era story.....

Primordial Vortex

Unfortunately, I can't say I'm too interested in this premise. Hopefully one of the other two will be more to my taste.

This is great I want more

Novus's Fanfiction Works

*shrug* Because that's literally the only way to seriously alter the course of a setting. Making meaningful changes REQUIRES an organization, either yours or someone else's. That's a truism of nearly every setting from Star Wars to Yui-go-oh. With changes to the later fueled primarily by the creation and support of the Duel Academy. Either in the real world or fiction, there really isn't a way to alter the fate of a world constructively without resources and people.

Novus's Fanfiction Works

That is not, in fact, the real delay. There were quite a few very early rebel groups. The Alderaanian Resistance, for example, founded in 19 BBY, literally within days of the Empire being declared. What took time was connecting all the groups together. Which was primarily an issue of lacking the logistics to do so safely. After that, it took even more time to become meaningful, as they lack war materials.

twilightwanderer

So as always I can't speak for Disney canon, I'm mostly pulling from Rebel Dawn for Legends EU. Also, I recognize that some individual rebel groups formed very early on. It's stated explicitly that Garm Bel Iblis of Corellia was trying for at least a few years to create a coalition of rebel groups, but it wasn't until Mon Mothma convinced leaders of the Alderaanian, Chandrilan, and Corellian resistances (along with presumably several smaller groups) to hold a summit and negotiate their differences, that the Rebel Alliance was formed (I will say after a quick check, it looks like The Force Unleashed changed some details slightly). Even after that, some groups/planets (e.g. Dornea) remained independent (either fully or with some cooperation), while Bel Iblis himself left the Alliance and formed his own splinter group some time after the Alliance formed over personal conflicts with it leadership (including feeling unrecognized/underappreciated/unrewarded for his contributions), and he would remain independent until the Thrawn crisis. I've got more that's less explicit and more inferred (from my memory at least), but this reply is getting long.
