The hate for vanilla was 100% justified. He was magnitudes more popular than amazing rappers of the time (KRS one, rhakim) just because hes white. The real pioneers of the 80s and early 90s were the black people from bronx queens. Not vanilla ice who copied them and made dogshit versions of their style.
