Any experience of ego death I've ever had told me that we are far more than our biological form, and that this is only the surface of our reality. It is just as valid to say that biological reality is the illusion and that our "self" is projecting it from the mind, as it is to say that the mind is the illusion and is only the byproduct of biological processes. Both require assumptions because our knowledge is so limited.

We are not either or, biology is intertwined with our inner mental state. The competition between these schools of thought are flawed because both biology and the inner mind contribute to the psychological state.
