Dru gave me a brilliant performance here.  The "deleted scene" is completely ad-libbed by him.  I really wanted to keep it in, but the dialogue wasn't consistant with Squirtle's character.  The way I'd been writing it, Squirtle never saw Charmander as a "friend."  He had only been sticking with Charmander because Squirlte is a huge stickler for the rules, and the rules state that a Pokemon must be loyal to his trainer.  That, coupled with the fact that he feels too powerless to actually oppose Charmander always made him feel unable to leave.  Him saying "We thought we could be your friend." doesn't really ring true to me, so I couldn't keep it in.
