YELLOW TIER ANNOUNCEMENT!

Hey, people! I'm going to take next week off after I put out the second weekly chapter for the Green tier. The last few weeks have not been the best, and I think I need some time to just rest and do nothing. My last time off was really just editing book 3, as were most of my breaks over the last three years of writing. I always end up spending them editing or catching up on stuff.

I'm happy to refund you for this month if you'd like. Just DM me if need that. I'll recharge my batteries and be back to work on the 23rd!

Ty everyone!

A/N: 3k chappy!

Kai stood still in the hallway, shoppers streamed around him as if he were a rock in a river, and a jumble of thoughts raged in his head. Pressing his palms to his eyes, he let out a heavy exhale. Once he saw it, he couldn’t deny he had feelings for Valela.

What were they exactly though? What should he do? He needed to talk with her. Possibly, after he figured out what to say.

“How did I end up in this mess?” He only realized he’d spoken out loud after the words left his mouth.

“By ignoring half your mind until it was too late?” Flynn gave him an empathetic pat on the shoulder. The pile of Lys’ boxes rested at his feet. “Don’t worry too much, man. Lucky for you, Valela’s understanding, even with idiots. She'll forgive you. Just make sure you know what you want before you talk.”

I’m working on that.

“Thanks,” Kai said. The solution wouldn’t magically hit him standing here, and he had more immediate problems to fix. “Maybe I should just cancel the dinner with Isadora.” Despite him stating he had no romantic intentions, clearly there'd been some willful misunderstanding.

“Nah, you’re not gonna get out of that so easily. Two mistakes don’t make one right. You told that girl you would go. You should tell her that in person if you have no interest in her.”

“Hmm, fair point,” Kai said. “That dinner is gonna be so awkward.”

Flynn grinned. “Oh, incredibly. That’s why I’m coming too.”

“What?”

“Didn’t you invite us just earlier? Were you lying?”

“I did…” Kai bit his cheek, recalling his panicked attempt to salvage the situation. “And no, you can come. I just didn’t think you’d want to.”

“Hey!” Flynn flicked his ear. “What else are friends for? Can’t let you drown on your own. Knowing your precedents, you’ll end up engaged to that girl before dessert is served. Not to mention, I can't miss watching you stumble through the dinner and break every social convention.”

“Yeah, thanks…”

“Eh, don’t mention it. Happy to sacrifice myself for the cause.” Flynn chucked. His gaze fell to the dozen bags still hanging from his arms. “Though, if you’re still feeling in debt, you could help me deal with Lys’ stuff. I can’t believe that girl ditched me with a hundred mesars of goods. Offer a hand and they take an arm. Really, I’m too nice for my own sake.”

“Right.” Kai gave an exasperated shake and bent to pick up a bundle of three lacquered boxes tied together with a red ribbon. The mark of a boutique gleamed on each side in gold leaf—one of thirteen similar packages. Even with her headstart, he was mildly impressed.

How did she visit so many shops in two hours? Should I ask her for tips on efficient scheduling?

“I’ll take half. We can get them delivered to her room. I’ll cover the fee.”

“Good idea, let’s delegate!” Flynn crouched to pick up six packages without upsetting the balance of the boxes he already carried. “So, how much do we have till your non-date?”

Kai glanced up. A clock of onyx and polished quartz hung at the intersection of each hallway. “About an hour?”

“Curses! Why didn’t you say so? Let’s deliver this stuff and get going. We need to still get you presentable and deal with that thing you call hair.”

“Wait! Why? It’s not a date.”

Flynn looked him up and down. “And that’s why we’re stopping with the hair. But just cause you’re not interested in her, it’s no reason to appear as you strode out of a sparring field. You want to turn her down, not insult her.”

But I did just leave Combat Magic…

***

Kai stood before the velvet lights of The Amorette.

The restaurant claimed a cozy corner spot along the inner promenade of the Wing Aurea’s third floor. Panes of red-tinted glass etched with rose vines glimmered in the light. The scent of floral herbs, flowers and spices drifted each time the door opened. Through the crystal doors, candles flickered on linen-draped tables, where elegantly dressed couples leaned over in quiet conversation.

Why did I agree to this again…?

Kai lingered on the threshold, feeling shabby in his plain academy's uniform and aware of the scuff on his boot. Tension laced his shoulders, sore from sparring and spellwork. The broad hallway flowed with the Wing Aurea’s usual restless bustle from professionals in pressed uniforms, students between late errands, the distant hum of lifts climbing.

“Definitely nothing romantic, huh?” Flynn laughed. He’d dressed in a sleek three-piece suit of black and charcoal gray. “Didn’t the name clue you in?” A golden sign hung above the entrance: a wrought rose with petals curled into stylized flames, glowing with soft emberlight.

“Please, shut up,” Kai huffed. He himself only wore an ironed uniform. His finger brushed his hair, now short and neat. A worthwhile concession, it’d cut the time he needed to prepare each day. “She said she'd book something modest. And… I wasn’t paying much attention, okay?”

“Yeah, I’d guessed that.” Flynn chortled again. “Well… no point in dithering. Let's go meet your non-date.”

“Stop calling her that!”

“Sure, bud.” Flynn mimed zipping his lips. “I promise. Tonight, I’ll just play the awkward and bumbling third wheel.” He clutched his chest with dramatic anguish and staggered forward.

“Such noble sacrifice. Don’t enjoy yourself too much.” Taking a deep breath, Kai strode up to the entrance.

The handsome server greeting patrons at the door eyed him critically, though he spoke with terse professionalism. “Mister Veernon! Of course, we’ve been waiting for you. Please, follow me this way. Miss Forlow is already at your table.” If the man didn’t expect Kai to be accompanied, his polite smile gave no sign.

Crossing the crystal doors, the interior decor, glittering chandelier and silver cutlery gave an air of intimate luxury. The server led them past a row of private booths. Wards and engraved partitions protected the privacy of each patron, though even Kai could smell the romantic undertones beneath the thick scent of roses.

They walked past a low-lit booth, where he spotted a familiar girl in a dress.

“Oh, Mat! You’re here! I’m so glad you made it.” Isadora stood up upon seeing him. Her face lit with a beaming smile. Fiery copper curls fell on her shoulder, glinting in the candlelight. Her dress was a darker red velvet, hugging her figure with a deceptively simple cut. “Nice haircut. It suits you. You look marvelous. Who’s your barber? Please, sit. ”

“Good to see you too.” Kai inclined his head in a tepid greeting. Any hope she hadn’t considered this a date died in an early grave. “You didn’t need to book such an expensive place.”

“It’s no bother. Really, the least I could do since I invited you. Don’t worry, everything’s already paid for.” She waved him to a chair. “Come, we’ve so much to talk about—”

Behind him, Flynn lightly cleared his throat—though it might have also been a stifled laugh.

Before the awkwardness could choke him, Kai made the introduction. “Remember how I mentioned I might bring some friends. I hope you don’t mind. Flynn’s an old friend. He’s in Martial Studies. Flynn, this is Isadora of House Forlow from my own course.”

“Uh, who are you calling old?” Flynn snorted indignantly, then turned to Isadora with a charming smile and a courteous shake. “I hope I’m not imposing. Mat insisted I come too since I’m his team leader in Mixed Combat. I heard you wanted to discuss sparring and spellcasting. From your rank at the Trials, you must be incredibly skilled.”

Her bubbly visage cracked, showing the cooler thoughts beneath. A moment later, she turned bright again. “No, of course not. No problem at all. There is plenty of space at the table. I’m curious to meet any of Matthew’s friends. How long have you known each other?”

Ignoring her pursed lips, Flynn took a seat across from her. “Well, we go way back. A whole fifteen months! You won’t believe it, but Matthew used to be even shorter. Actually, the first time we met…”

Spirits have mercy. Maybe this wasn’t such a great idea…

Feeling like a stiff block of wood, Kai reached the backseat of the next chair when another high-pitched voice intruded.

“You’re all already here. Wonderful!” Lys slipped into the booth with a breathless smile. “Forgive me if I’m late.” She smoothed the puffy layers of her pink dress. Wavy frills spilled along her shoulders, sleeves and the hem of her skirt. “Oh, Mat. Thank you for holding my seat. Always such a gentleman.” With a flirty wink, she gracefully settled into his chair. Tucking back her golden curls, she looked between them with an expectant smile. “So, are you ready to order? I’m famished.”

Kai stared blankly.

Isadora pressed her lips into a thin, bloodless line.

Flynn only looked mildly surprised, eyes gleaming with amusement.

I did invite her too…

“I’m glad you could make it,” Kai said and threw a glance back. For a heartbeat, he expected to see Valela’s graceful figure glide toward them, auburn hair held back by a braid and a subtle smile curving her lips. She didn’t. No one else was coming. He found himself a little disappointed.

I’ll talk to her.

Left standing alone, he walked to the last chair in the shaded corner. From the glares Lys and Isadora exchange beneath the amiable smiles, Kai opted to skip introductions.

I just have to survive this dinner. How hard can it be?

"It's always nice eating in company. Shall we order?” Lys picked up the menu with two fingers. Her little nose scrunched at the roses and hearts embossed in the scarlet leather. “How charmingly quaint. A little heavy-handed, but there are people of all tastes. I love new experiences.”

“The Amorette is among the most renowned establishments at Realion.” Isadora wryly smiled, her voice cool, lacking her usual liveliness. “You need to book weeks in advance for a table.”

“Really, weeks?” Flynn looked up from his perusal of the dishes. “I thought you only invited Mat a couple of days ago.”

Lys clicked her tongue at him with a tiny shake, then turned to Isadora. “Oh, honey. Please, don’t listen to him.” She daintily patted the girl’s hand. “Have you been planning this dinner since the Trials?”

“I—” Isadora bit her lip and pulled back as if a snake bit her, her face a shade closer to her hair. “I called in a favor to find a spot. Since Matthew’s from the outer territories, I wished to show him the best the academy had to offer. He must not have had many chances.”

“That is very sweet of you.” Unperturbed, Lys flipped a page and rubbed her fingers together as if somehow measuring the quality. “Such a cozy establishment. Maybe I could pick the place next time. The provinces also don’t seem to have the same standards of the capital.”

Isadora’s smile wilted a little. “What are you trying to say?”

“Nothing. I’m only appreciating your choice.” Lys gestured airily, flipping another page. “What do you think I’m saying?”

“Maybe it’s just not your taste. People love the Amorette.”

“What a curious choice of word. Love. I’m sure some people do. How do you like it, Mat?”

Two pairs of eyes turned to regard him with dangerous intensity. Flynn sipped a glass of wine to hide his smile.

This must be my punishment.

Kai swallowed, discovering a sudden interest in the tablecloths and the woven rose of the centerpiece. “I don’t have much experience. Looks nice though. A little tight for a group.”

“An excellent point!” Lys’ pearly smile shone with vindication.

“He said he liked it.” Isadora giggled instead. “And we’ve yet to taste anything too.”

As they each reinterpreted his answer, Flynn raised an arm to call a server and order food. Naturally, the ingredients, preparation and condiments grew into another point of contention.

Kai soon lost track of their insinuation and arguments, offering the occasional nod and wishing he could sink through his seat. At least, the steaming plate of grilled vegetables and seared meat in bittersweet sauce gave him an excuse to stuff his face and say nothing. Not that he could get many words even if he wanted.

Watching them trade jabs and sharp smiles, he bent over his plate. Each time the conflict waned, Flynn merrily poured fuel on the flames with some harmless remark.

Definitely no risk of romance. Though it might have been less painful to come alone.

“…Mat.” Isadora brushed his hand over the table. “You must’ve taken a fascinating route in the Mid-Term Trials to rank first?”

Having since lost track of the conversation, Kai just hummed and nodded sagely. Alas, it wouldn’t be polite to say more while chewing. And he chewed very slowly.

Instead of being deterred, Isadora beamed and delved into a retelling on how she had recruited a team and earned seventh place. “Well, not everyone did as well… but your stories must be even better, Matthew. I heard there were some accidents in the underground maze. Even rumors of sabotage! Is that true?”

“Uhm…”

“Can we not talk about more monstrous spiders? Please, we’re eating.” Lys nibbled on a bite. “Some arrays malfunctioned. It happens. I’m sure the academy took care of it.”

Just some strangely coincidental and suspicious malfunctions. But yeah. Would the Dean tell me even if he found anything?

Kai nodded along, not wishing to discuss it.

Despite Lys and Flynn throttling any romantic vibe in the crib, Isadora never lost her smile or abandoned her attempt to involve him. When dessert was served at last, the tropical sorbet tasted like salvation. Still, the two fought to pay. In a rare accord, they silenced him with a glare when he offered to cover it.

Patricians are so weird. Well, I definitely didn’t get engaged. Not sure about not making her feel insulted, though.

Even more surprisingly, she still insisted on going to spar after dinner.

“I hoped to discuss spellcasting with you.” She threw a not-so-subtly look at Lys. “I have many skills I’d like to show you.”

“Wonderful idea. I’m also curious to see Mat.” Lys slid between them.

“Where are we going?” Flynn stretched his arms with a radiant, unaware grin. At least one of them had enjoyed the dinner. “I could use a little exercise.”

Isadora dug her nails into her palms. Eyeing Lys’ frilly gown, she sniffed. “In that dress? You wouldn’t want to ruin it.”

“Don’t worry, I always bring a spare.” Lys brilliantly tapped her enchanted purse. “I have friends who could join us too. If you don’t mind, of course.”

“Maybe another time. We’re barely going to make my reservation. I only booked the arena for an hour. They wouldn’t make it in time.”

“I see.” Lys pouted. “It’ll be just us today then.”

Thank the Spirits.

Reaching the muted whirr of lifts, they left the Wing Aurea and trailed the cobble paths toward the main cluster. The chatter cooled into a companionable quiet as they entered the Caelus Tower and descended to the underground levels. The dueling hall opened in a chamber carved from arching granite, its ceiling ribbed with steel and runes. Layered wards thrummed within the stone, controlled through a crystal cube on a dais.

By the time Kai found a fitting set of enchanted protections, Isadora already stood in the marked circle, her face brimming with liveliness. “Why don’t we go for a bout, Miss Fairmont?

“How could I intrude on your time? After all the trouble you went through to bring Mat here. You seemed so curious about his skills.”

“Alright, I’m ready.” Kai stepped forward before the argument could escalate.

Unlike the verbal sparring, the bouts passed painlessly. Spells sparked and faded without bite, more to shake off the evening’s stiffness than a true challenge. The room’s wards glimmered to absorb the impact.

Despite her persistent goading, Lys crossed her legs on the benches and offered bright commentary. By the time they settled into a rhythm and cycled through their Magic skills, the time was already up.

“I’ll see you in class, Matthew.” Isadora marched off with a huff.

“Sleep well. We should do this again!” Lys cheerfully waved, twirled her puffy dress to stand, and whispered to him. “A pleasure dining with you, Mat.”

“Yeah… same,” Kai dryly said, feeling more tired than after an actual session of grueling sparring.

With a wink, the petite girl skipped away. “I can’t wait to tell Valela how it went.”

It’s finally over.

Flynn clapped his back. “Hey, cheer up. That was the best dinner I’ve had in a while. And the entertainment was top-notch.”

“Glad I managed to amuse you.” Kai stared at him darkly. The whole affair had been even more awkward than he’d imagined, though he couldn’t argue with the results. He did feel a little bad. Honestly, Isadora kept her cool more than was reasonable.

I doubt she’ll ask me out again. One less problem.

They remained in the deserted dueling hall.

“So, have you decided what to do with Val?” Flynn asked.

“Actually… yes,” Kai muttered, surprised by his own answer. Somewhere along the odd evening, his thoughts crystallized into a decision. "There's a lot going on. For now, it's too weird for me to think about being with anyone. I like Val, but you know…” He took out the privacy ward Rain gifted him. “I have memories of a life before this one. Even if it didn’t last that long. I don’t want to mess things up. At least for a few more years."

“Sounds fair. If that’s what you want.” Flynn shrugged. “Who knew you could be so patient. Though you should be honest with her. Don’t leave her hanging. Who knows, maybe she'll put a pin in it. She certainly deserves the truth.”

“Yeah…”

That conversation was definitely not gonna be extremely awkward too.

Arrogant Savant

Kai's habit of ignoring reality is really coming to a head. He's not really thinking about it for multiple reasons (some of them valid) but he's at the point where there's no way to completely avoid and it's better to aim for "social survival".

JH

Correction: “I doubt she’ll ask him out again.” -> “ask me out again”

Brett

I still like Isadora as a character. Please don’t turn her into a scorned woman.

Flamescale

TFTC Glad to see Kai will be addressing it next chapter, at least partially. I like how this book is focusing more on his character growth, both in skill and personality.

Galadath

Agreed. This chapter was great but I’d like to see Kai explain himself and smooth things over with her a bit, instead of her just becoming a villain

CPTincognito

Lys gained a layer of depth from this, i really like to see it. Every character in this scene handled it in a way that was unique to them, so seeing Lys actively sabotage Isadora's efforts so thuroughly was great. Shes not just on team Val - shes captain.

Andrew Goebel

Kinda messed up that Matt made a mistake and then didn't stand up deal with it like an adult. Letting lys and Flynn essentially mock Isadora it's kinda fucked up. Not a big fan of Matt right now.

Brett

Agreed however if you look at it from a nobles perspective the dangling of romance to entice someone to come to your house… the calling in of favours, it doesn’t necessarily speak of romantic interest. So basically it was 2 nobles protecting their own interests. Hopefully they will eventually end up on the same side without the story going on a tangent before reconciling the characters

Brett

Matt was out of his depth and being forthright may have been more of a faux pas, especially in front of company.

Heraclitus

Yep. Isadora didn't deserve any of this. I get why it ended up like that - Kai has zero social acumen (especially compared to people who literally have multiple magical social skills) - but it was still super lame. Funny and entertaining, but still hella lame.

Some Guy

Thanks for the chapter

bcd051

Somehow I don't think the conversation with Valela is going to go the way he thinks it will

David H

I see it as Isadora forcing herself on Kai, and then Kai's friends rescuing him. Neither Isadora nor Kai is in the wrong. It's normal human interaction.

Andrew Goebel

Matt's a 30 year old man at this point. He can fight his own social battles against teenagers. And while I can certainly see this being a dance of noble privilege and a normal one at that. I can't see this as a normal human interaction. If I asked someone out, and they brought two friends to the outing to make fun of me the whole time I would not consider that normal.

Trevayne

Thanks for the chapter.

Doug Wills

Mat is not close to a 30 year old man. That’s ridiculous. He, again, has basically 0 normal interaction with people his age. He stopped going to school at 12 in his first life. Has never lived as an adult. Had one friend in this life beyond the age of 4, and then spent 2 years in the hidden sanctuary. Also, if he told her he might bring friends it’s completely on her for treating it like a romantic venture. What? Being a kid twice =/= to being 30. I dunno exactly what he is. But he’s nothing like an adult at all.

Boo

While I’m glad there’s no romance, Kai’s reasons for putting off dating Val for a few yrs doesn’t really make much sense. If he’s too busy and doesn’t want to start anything that’s one thing (makes complete sense) but I don’t get why he keeps brining up his reincarnation. He’s 15 and Val was a few yrs older than him in the previous bks, so she should be close to 17 at this point. Considering his previous life (a life of illness), I would think he would be interested in actually getting to experience “normal” teenage things like dating now that he’s so close to his previous age. LOL at the same time I’m glad that’s not what the author wants to write about.

YeetimusMaximus

This chapter made me want to crawl into a hole and die. Great work!

GloinJr

It would, in a way, be like unintentional grooming. He was mentally like 23 (or even best case of you buy into the idea that he hasn't matured at all, he was mentally 17) when he met Val when she was like 6, and his unique personality owing to his past life's memories is a large part of what drew Val's interest in him. Also apparently it's a controversial take based on the comment section of the last chapter, but living for 33 years, even if you didn't do "adult" stuff, is gonna make you far more mature than Kai's biological age of 15 would lend itself to. Imo it's comparable to a 33 yr old NEET that's just been living in their parents basement. Sure they haven't done a lot of adult stuff and act like a child but I still don't want them dating a child

GloinJr

He definitely has accumulated enough life experience to behave normally, it's just that he hasn't trained the "skill" of social interaction. He has all the tools he needs to adapt to the social situations, but also has the burden of essentially 20 years of an entrenched habit of lacking social skills. The longer your mind operates in a certain way, the stronger your mind becomes entrenched in that way of operating and it becomes much harder to deviate from that mode. Partially why I don't buy the "he's still just mentally 17 tho" thing cus that's just not how psychology works. Like people with deeply entrenched mental processes, especially trauma responses, are prescribed ketamine therapy to ease the brains ability to modify how it processes stimulus. So in a way he acts 17 and socially inept because he's been mentally 17 for 15 years

Maximof

Honestly kind of a downer of a chapter , I was excited about learning about the higher nobles and what were their interests with Kai , use him, marry him to some family branch and so on especially since he’s been displaying high skills left and right

usr

Honesty this couple of chapters are ... not intresting? What happened to space class, meeting his formal tutors, like the point of going to this academy was to get some feat and solidify his gaps in education, but is it really nessesery? Before he was contuining his dad's research, found a sealed mini world, got trapped in there with a space god and ferral beasts/monsters, managed to get out and even has a whole new identity - he could start fresh, be anyone. What I am trying to say is that he had an intresting adventure(reckless, yes, but this is a book, not real life). Now we have mundane problems like being overworked in classes, no time for his friends, this akward love thing with val and isabella ugh - it feels stale, nothing is going on. Yes there is the cultists arc hinted, but his butler told him that he needs to get to green? So not soonin any case

Samuel

Kai came off as a really bad person in this whole affair tbh

George

what, because some girl preyed on a misunderstanding to maneuver him into a datw he didn't want?

George

him not acting like a mature adult is characterization telling the reader he is not a mature adult

Alex

I agree with (so not interesting). Feels like reading romance novel.

Danielius

I hate how people act like big mental age = grooming, bad person and low mental age = clueless, good boi Kai. And then all the comments arguing on whether Kai has high or low mental age and treat it as a moral judgement of the character and the author. I don't believe that high mental age necessarily means grooming. Laws are set up the way they are to remove any chance of it and not waste time on nuances of every relationship. I do not believe that high mental age necessarily implies grooming. Grooming happens because there is a clear split in a relationship between who is the authority and who isn't (often times caused by an age gap) and the person with more power in the relationship exploits the other person causing them to do things that are harmful, invasive or violating to the person with less power in the relationship. It is an intentional act of exploiting one's influence over the other person. I would argue that this happens in relationships with same age assholes, narcissists and psychpaths too. The mental age gap should not he treated as a basis for moral judgement. Kai should be judged by whether he approaches the relationship with good intention and strives for an equal relationship. As long as both parties feel like they are respected and have an equal say in the relationship I do not see how an age gap (mental or physiological) should dictate anything.

Adurna

Now just gonna hope Kai will at least come proper clean to Val rather than waffle around.

Thomas Adams

So, with only Kai's perspective, we learned Isodora might have been plotting this for a while, Lys is proactive in protecting Val's potential relationship with Mat, maybe the same with Flynn although he is food motivated so it might just be a bonus, and then that Kai still has issues seeing people his physical age as being his age. It's kinda hard to really pin down Isadora's motivation, given we've only seen her be friendly to Mat, I don't know if she's genuinely into Mat or just after the top ranker. A follow up chapter of some sort from the girls' perspectives being asked how their night went might be interesting.

Viria

Same. Had to put the phone down 5 times while reading it. So embarrassing it was painful.

Boo

I don’t agree with the idea that he was “mentally” 23 yrs old when he met her. LOL im sorry but the amount of mental gymnastics required for this whole idea is just too much!

Andrew Goebel

We can't have it both ways. We can't isekia a 17 year old into a baby and have that baby be able to advance with the knowledge, acumen and maturity of a 17 year old AND say he's just a lil baby who doesn't know nothing. Even if we consider Matt's social development ending when he was 12 originally, hes had another 12-14 years to continue to develop (not counting his prison time). This is an adult. Full stop.

An

can we also hold Lys and Flynn responsible? Lys especially, it's not like Isadora asked Kai out just to get at Val, and yet she's over here bullying this poor girl. Maybe if he'd gone alone, he would've been able to dispel any notions of a romantic relationship with Isadora and they could've stayed friends, but because of these two mocking her and treating this all like a game, this bridge has just been burned for Kai and she'll likely not want to have anything to do with him anymore

Andrew Goebel

Good point, An. No one is being their best self here. Would be a good point in the story to have a little growth through being honest with each other. Which, it looks like at least some of that is coming so that's not so bad.

GloinJr

Fine mentally 17, still not cool. And it's not really "mental gymnastics" when it's just verbatim what happened in the story

GloinJr

George, the fact that he's had 13 years in which to make friends and adjust to his new life (if we're excluding his time in the divine realm), and he made like 3 friends and still hasn't developed social skills kinda just lends credence to my point. A child with no past life experiences, like his sisters, Flynn, Val, etc. would've developed these social skills by now. But somehow Kai gets the "but he's just a lil baby" pass when everyone else his age is making it work. And on the other hand, the fact that he reincarnated with his 17 year old mind is what led to most of what has happened to him. He befriended his little troop of toddlers because he was basically 17 and decided to make a lil army. Val was interested in him because of his unique personality owing to him having lived like 15 more years than her. Same with Flynn. He acquired his power and got mentored by his teachers because he was a child with the mind of, at least, a 17 yr old. Almost everything good that has happened to him is owed almost exclusively to him being more mature than he should've been, but now that he's 15 he's just a lil baby boy that doesn't know anything about anything and blah blah blah? Don't buy it sorry, he has a deeply engrained aversion to social interaction that he has calcified for like 2/3 of his life, and he is dealing with the issues of overcoming a 20+ yr old habit

GloinJr

Ooh the urge to argue with people who think it's totally cool for Kai to date Val rn is so strong. It's not good for my mental health to be schizo typing to like 5 random people that I'll never interact with again but man the urge is so strong to keep doing it

GloinJr

That's kinda a weird way to interpret just asking someone out. If she came to realize that he had no interest in her and kept pushing it, then she's weird. But from her perspective, there's a talented socialy awkward guy in one of her classes, she invited him to dinner, and he pulled up with two of his friends who immediately started harassing her for the rest of the night for reasons she has no idea about and no way of knowing. Granted, idk if Kai should've stepped up and said anything to stop Flynn and Lys cus then Isadora may have interpreted Kai to be interested in her rather than just being courteous, but it's still just a really messed up situation for Isadora. She's not evil for being interested in a classmate lol

David

It’s bemusing how everyone seems to be taking for granted that Kai has done something wrong. He’s not dating Val. He doesn’t want to date Val. How is he responsible for managing her emotions? If he did want to date someone, would he need to run that by her first? It’s moot because it’s not a date, and he said it wasn’t a date, and she still ran off in a huff. Could Kai have talked with Val earlier and explained he wasn’t looking for anything right now? Yes. Should he have? Probably. But until two chapters ago, we were being led to believe he was completely oblivious. If I had to blame someone, I would pick Flynn, as much as I love him, because he’s spent months teasing Kai and never once tried to help him navigate this social blind-spot; that’s not how a brother should act. I am glad to have the romance subplot put down. It’s dissonant to have Kai thinking romancing his peers is icky and then having everyone around him pushing him into it. Given the way everyone acted these last two chapters, Kai is completely vindicated in his opinion that he needs to wait for Val to grow up before he starts anything, even if he has a lot of maturing to do himself.

GloinJr

Yesssss bro they just need let Val grow up. In my perfect world Kai tells her what's up, she gets over this infatuation she's held for Kai, gets in a real relationship with someone her age, then maybe if that doesn't work out the Kai and Val romance could be a thing.

GloinJr

And to clarify my thoughts, I think any Isekai story where the MC dates a minor or starts dating someone the millisecond they turn legal age is loser incel chud bait and anyone that enjoys or defends that is a loser pedo incel chud. Argue with a brick wall

David

The relationship itself is another matter. They have almost nothing in common except that they’re powerful people from the same colony. Her family was complicit in the colonization that killed his father. She’s not responsible for that, but I don’t get why Kai doesn’t seem to care at all. They’re both driven, but they’re driven in opposite directions. How are they going to maintain a relationship when Kai is off grinding to blue for months or years at a time? How is she going to be an effective governor if she goes with him? It’s completely doomed.

Xanadar

You should really read up on the definition of grooming. Our MC is not doing that but you believe he is because you don't understand the word. You believing there's something like unintentional grooming only proves you don't know the meaning.

Andrew Goebel

I've seen a couple of takes that make me want to do a "yes officer, this one right here."

GloinJr

Dead ass I've seen people say Val is "mature for her age" 😭

Andrew Goebel

@GloinJr, that's a better way to think about it. I was being a bit too black and white. But this is symptom not just a bad beat. Kai/Matt is stuck. Major Tangent: That's the same for the story itself a bit? I feel like the cruelty of the empire has taken a bit of a backseat to classes and and the cult. I'm feeling a little confused by the story direction entirely. I could totally see Kai/Matt stuck mentally and goal wise.

GloinJr

Yo Daan I'ma keep it a buck with you, I left a very mean reply to you but I'ma take the time to edit it into something more constructive. So please just reminisce with me on how the story has gone. Kai meets Val when she's roughly 6-8 ish, I forget. He is mentally AT LEAST 17 in this moment, although I don't ascribe to the idea that his maturity has somehow been put on pause (even if his personality hasn't grown past what can be expected of a teen, conscious existence inextricably lead to maturation, whether that be in personality growth/change or in a cementing of personality traits). Either way, it is functionally an at least 17 year old meeting a 7 year old who fairly quickly develops a crush on him, consider how this would make you feel irl. Now, like 8-10 years have passed where Val's entire childhood has been spent infatuated with Kai. I don't blame Kai for this, he didn't intend for Val to develop those feelings, but the basic fact that he was 17 prior to reincarnation gave him the unique mindset and personality that led to Val developing these feelings for him, which is why I deemed it unintentional. Anyways, she has spent like half of her life with a crush on a man that has lived more than twice as long as her. From a basic child developmental psychology stand point, this is bad. Irl she would come out of this with severely warped romantic skills and preference. Granted, this is a book, so hopefully she can turn this around by dating someone else and figure her shit out. But back to my point, Kai being at least mentally 17 when Val was 7 has severely affected her sexual development (I use the word sexual cus this is just how it is described in child developmental psychology). Regardless of Kai's intentions he, accidentally, cultivated the attraction of a minor from a very young age due to his position of greater maturity.

GloinJr

Yeah regarding the story direction, unfortunately we've reached the standard point of the litrpg plot roller coaster where the plot kinda stagnates. This kinda happens a lot in longer litrpg stories somewhere around books 3 to 5 where either there was a lack of planning (which I don't think is the case here) or a necessity to expand the breadth of the story and allow more future plot points to surface. Like on the radiant isles, we started with a lot of open plot points that steadily closed. The basilisk/towers/divine realm, Kai's mentors, his family situation, etc. As each of these resolved, there started to be less opportunities to introduce new plot lines in a way that felt natural. After leaving the isles though we've been steadily collecting new plot threads while Kai gains the power to engage with them. There's future possibilities of interaction with the sirens, the cult, reuniting with Kai's teachers, the empires political landscape etc. These are being introduced so they can be tied back in as Kai gains more strength. Unfortunately this leads to an academy arc that possibly could have been avoided, but frankly I don't mind academy arcs, my favorite parts of a lot of stories is the MC learning and growing cus it makes the pay off of fights much higher. I find that when it's just back to back combat, it can become a bit stale, and the same goes for mindless power ups. I personally like seeing an MC become more competent rather than just a pure power jump. This arc def has the potential to drag tho even for me, and assuming Drewells understands this we'll likely see some time skips in our future once immediate concerns are resolved, like us readers gaining a general sense of the academy and Kai's personal relationships being addressed

GloinJr

At the end of the day the Isekai genre gets away with creating pedophilic relationships because a)the MC may be biologically a minor in their second life, and b) they can pretend that because their MC was either a loser or developmentally stunted in some way in the first life, they can pretend the MC still is mentally a minor despite having lived like 30 plus years (I don't believe this is the case here tho because Kai is OBVIOUSLY gonna tell Val what's up and why they can't be in a relationship for the foreseeable future). Consider a 30 year old NEET. He drops out of school at 12 for some reason and spends the next 21 years in his grandmas basement playing WOW and having his grandma take care of all of his needs. Based on the same logic that leads some to believe Kai is still mentally a kid, this neet would still be mentally a kid. Now imagine, when he is 23, he meets a 6 yr old on WOW. They play the game together and whatnot for the next 10 years. If that neet were to enter a relationship with the now 16 yr old friend from WOW, it would not only be legally wrong but morally wrong. Even if he did not intend to groom her, her personality has been affected by her relationship with this man from a young age, such as by validation when the neet enjoys talking to her and negative reinforcement when he doesn't enjoy it (not sinisterly, just by the basic fact that when you talk to a friend for long enough your personality changes based on your interactions with them). If she developed a crush on this neet at the age of say, 8 or 10, her preference in partners will be severely affected by this relationship for years to come. While an adult cannot express complete control over the feelings of a child, if they should notice any concerning feelings, such as attraction from the child to the adult, it is the duty of the adult to address these feelings and inform the child why they shouldn't/can't have these feelings.

GloinJr

Yeah very fair concerns regarding the validity of a relationship between them, although I would assume that some of the concerns with Val, like her future position as governor of the isles, would happen much later, like 40 at the earliest or even longer considering that higher ranked people like her parents age slower. Regarding her parents being complicit in Kai's father's death, I think we've seen that he doesn't hold that against Val herself, although I do find it surprising that his animosity in general towards the republic and her parents has kinda taken a back seat. Also they obviously care for each other, regardless of any perceived commonalities or lack thereof, so my biggest concern regarding a potential relationship is just that it would be very icky if Kai entered a relationship with her anywhere within the next at least 5 years. And by that point a lot of the concerns you brought up very well may be resolved. Guess we'll see tho because this relationship is obviously gonna take a back seat for quite a while

Boo

Dude wtf! This is what I mean by “mental gymnastics”! You keep mentioning all this other stuff and doing lots of math but the fact is: Kai is 15 now and Val is at least 17. They aren’t kids and there’s no “grooming” occurring. I’m not sure why you seem to believe Val’s “sexual development” was “severely” affected. I find your logic incredibly bizarre tbh.

Tars

Genuinely curious would you be more interested in a kai-elijiah paring? Kai is technically 3 years older.

GloinJr

I'm a bit bad with names but that's one of his teachers right? If so thatone's very interesting, cus like on the surface it's actually a really cool pairing, but since my memory is a bit shot idk if Elijah knows that Kai is reincarnated. If he does know and has for a while, I think it's fine once Kai reaches whatever legal age exists in the republic assuming he hasn't reached it already. If he doesn't know Kai is reincarnated, or only learned recently, then I kinda don't trust that Elijah's attraction wouldn't be coming from a weird place. But since I'm pretty sure all of Kai's teachers from the radiant isles knew about his reincarnation, then yeah that's a cool pairing

GloinJr

Like to synthesize my thoughts on Isekai relationships in descending order of importance, a) an MC should never date a minor even if the MC is still biologically a minor. B) an MC should not date a childhood friend the millisecond they turn legal age, especially of the legal age in the new world is lower than the legal age where they were from on earth. C) if the MC were to date a childhood friend when at legal age they should own up to their reincarnation, their partner should know. And D) an MC as a minor should not date an adult (as I would assume that adult is a lil pedophilic), especially if the adult doesn't know about their reincarnation or learned about it significantly after meeting the MC or developing feeling for the MC. To me it's all about clarity with the partner and dodging both the MC and the love interest being pedos, so my ideal Isekai relationship is the MC as a biological adult on the new world meeting another adult and owning up to the reincarnation stuff before entering a relationship or relatively early on. And to clarify my list, item a results in me immediately dropping the series while item d would make me feel weird about the series, and I'd only keep reading if the rest of the stuff on the story is cool or the relationship itself is done pretty well and im a way that isn't viscerally gross

Tars

So what if valela is also from earth? No reason there can be like more than just kai. That would be a fun twist.

Tars

The way I hope this going, kai tells valela and it turns she is also isekai'd and at least suspected he was. At 15/33 Kai is in a really awkward position because there really is no acceptable options for him to date. Anyone his actual age would give me the ick especially with power dynamics of them likely being green or above, and anyone his biological age is not really an option either. It's kinda an interesting predicament because at least to me his is not 33 and also not 15. And it's not like he is just some number in-between 15 and 33 either. He is someone who has had the experience of growing up twice and actually remembering all of his second childhood.

GloinJr

Thats actually really funny cus Val being a reincarnator also sets up the hilarious plot point of isekais being common in this world, but everyone that gets isekai'd is just super paranoid and never lets it leak. Like how funny would it be if like 0.1% of the population is reincarnated and they're all just living in this state of paranoia that at many moment their secret could come out

GloinJr

Boo, I find pedophiles incredibly bizarre so I guess we're both confused rn. You seem to be so confused in fact that you can't seem to think beyond a surface level on anything or comprehend the English language when it is so clearly spelled out to you. Not to mention the mental gymnastics of saying "erm well he only lived to 17 in his first life, but he reincarnated so he's actually just living a second childhood so he's not maturing at all. Additionally, he's actually biologically 15 rn so he's actually 15" like bro he lived for 33 years it doesn't get much simpler than that. So, I'll leave you with this. Wanting Kai and Val to date RN is very pedophilic in nature, I don't engage with pedophiles, argue with a brick wall

GloinJr

Hey Boo! I also have a question for you :). I'm just gonna assume you watch hentai cus you're acting... like this. So quick question, when you watch loli hentai, what's your modus operandi? Do you casually watch it, share it with friends and family, or save it to a hard drive for future use? Based on the comments youve been leaving it rlly could be any of these. Based off how dumb you're acting, and your inability to engage with basic surface level thinking, that would lend itself to the first option. However, your willingness to broadcast your pedophilia in a public forum seems to lend credence to the second option. On the other hand, you seem very entrenched in this way of thinking which also means the third option is possible. Curious as to your response :) toodles 🎊

Boo

Your comments are really offensive and downright hateful at this point, but you seem to have some serious issues and I don’t know what’s going on in your life right now so all I will say is: I don’t know how you could come to the conclusion that I’m a “pedophile” based on the few comments I’ve made here (like literally, your twisted logic makes no sense to me), but I can’t deal with your drama and hate. Please leave me alone.

GloinJr

Hey Boo :) could I pitch a movie concept to you? It's a spinoff of Planet of the Apes called Planet of the Pedos. So like it's a very similar story but instead of apes it's pedos. For instance, instead of the scene where Caesar says "Apes together strong" there could be a character, perhaps named Boo or something along those lines, that says "Chomos together strong". What are your thoughts on this?

GloinJr

Hey Boo :) I've been wanting to start a music career as a cover artist, what do you think about me starting with a cover of Not Like Us by Kendrick lamar. I think it would make a great start to this budding musical adventure personally, but do you think I should stay faithful to the source material, because personally I think it would add to the character of my music if I changed a few lines. Like instead of talking about drake, maybe I could replace that with the word boo. Thoughts?

GloinJr

Hey Boo :) I was talking to this 33 yr old man the other day and he was telling me about how he just broke up with his highschool sweetheart. Do you know any 17 yr olds I can put him into contact with? I feel like you might have some connections

JH

Hey Gloin, no disrespect to your perspective on the story, but I feel like you’ve crossed a line in your last 3 comments. It’s gotten a bit too personal, and it’s messing with the atmosphere of respectful discourse we usually try to have on the threads for this series. I’m not saying he’s right and you’re wrong or anything, and I can see how it escalated, but I’d still appreciate you taking those last three down.

JH

“I'd love some tips on free casting. If you have time, of course. Maybe we could grab dinner after classes and meet to practice?" My first impression was that Isadora deliberately obfuscated her intentions here. That there was nothing in this that suggested a romantic date. That her picking a couples restaurant when she called it “something modest” is misdirection, and that she was being manipulative here because she is trying to claim some sort of ownership over Kai. After re-reading a bit, I think my impression is based mostly on how I see her character, and probably some amount of bias based on her brother and her social station. Another character could have done the same thing, using the same words, and I might have thought it sweet, brave, and just her way of putting herself out there.

GloinJr

Yeah exactly, like if Val pulled this with Kai but then Isadora and her brother pulled up and just harassed Val the whole night it would've been received waaaaaay different

Brett

Matt has usually been the “mature” one. We are seeing a bit of everyone catching up to his maturity…

MeYouIt

Dude... Wtf are you talking about. A large mental age gap inherently leads to a toxic power inbalance. There is a case for it being ok for Kai to date Val, and that is that he is not a 33 year old adult, but a kid that has lived for 33 years. There's a difference. Don't start to argue that it isn't toxic for 33 year olds to date 15 year olds, it is. Fucking weirdo.

Boo

LOL I am female, which is probably at least partly why I found this persons replies so crazy and confusing. Anyways, I know it’s late and you might not see this but sorry for the drama!

Alessio

Idk Isadora didn't seem too bad as a character and i feel like they treated her like shit just cause she asked Kai out, maybe she doesn't even know about Kai and Val (and even then they're not even together). Soooo they basically bullied her the whole evening cause she asked Kai out

Karako

This wasn't awkward, it was childish and cruel. Lys acted like a shrew, Flyn like an ass, Val like a child, and Kai even more of child. Grow a pair and be honest. Everyone but Isadora were plainly terrible here.

GloinJr

I'm one of the people you're complaining about, so I'll do my best to explain myself. Firstly, I feel somewhat bad for the name calling I engaged in, I've made it a point in my personal relationships to not engage in non-constructive arguments so I kinda scratched the itch of crashing out on ppl thru arguing with some people in the comments. Anyways, I'll start by clearing up some things. First, I'd like to talk about the differences we find between legality and morality. Firstly, you say that laws aren't meant to get into the nuance of every situation. That is somewhat true, however it's ignoring the entire legal system and existence of lawyers. For instance, murder is illegal, but murder in defense of your life isn't. But, then, the legality depends on the prosecution vs defense's argumentation of if the crime in self defense was the only option, was there a way to deescalate the situation without murder, etc. If every law were to be taken at face value there would be no need for lawyers, the legal system inherently allows for nuance. Furthermore, I would disagree with the implication that legality equivocates to morality, laws are more guidelines of what a government deems most beneficial to a society, which is different from a more ground level understanding of morality. It's perfectly legal for a private equity company to buy up large amounts of single family housing then jack the rent up, doesn't mean it's a good thing. Anyways, onto the whole discussion of "maturity" and "grooming". First, there's a HUGE misunderstanding of what maturity is. People seem to think an 18 yr that acts like a businessman is somehow "more mature" than a 30 yr old NEET who's never held a job and just plays video games all day, or that maturity is some math equation where you can plug in "well he's lived 30 years, but he still sleeps with a teddy bear so thats a 0.75x modifier to his maturity number, and he only had his first relationship at 22 so that's a -5 modifier, but he also saw a murder at 13 so that's a +4, so by my calculations he has a maturity rating of 23.5". This is not how the vast majority of child developmental psychologists understand maturity. If you look at some models of child devlopment, more specifically the ones relating to behaviors, you'll find that they are generally a series of either/or statements with an age where you generally reach that either/or. Erikson's psychosocial model represents this perfectly. At the age of 0-18 months, you either learn to trust your care taker, or distrust them. If you don't learn to trust them you're not stuck at age 0 maturity for the rest of your life, it's just a different outcome. More relevant to Kai is Erikson's 6th stage, Intimacy vs Isolation (ages 18-40), either you form close, healthy relationships, or you lack the ability or desire and don't. It's not "well you didn't form any relationships so you now have the maturity of an 18 yr old for the rest of your life" it's, either you do and have this outcome, or you don't and have that outcome. More infamously, there's Freud's psychosexual model, still built on either/or cases. Either you learn to poop normally as a child and develop an easy going personality, or you don't and develop an anal retentive, uptight personality. None of these lend credence to the idea that if you don't hit a certain milestone you're just stuck as the age you were supposed to hit it at. If you don't hit the milestone, you keep maturing, just in a different way. That's because, and this is important and the crux of my argument, MATURITY IS NOT A SET OF CERTAIN EXPRESSED BEHAVIORS IT IS THE PROCESS OF ESTABLISHING AND CALCIFYING BEHAVIORS. The 30 yr old NEET who has just been playing video games in his mom's basement since 15 is not somehow less mature than a 25 yr old with a full time job, the neet has just matured in a way that the layman would call "immature". The neet isn't justified to date minors just cus he's been acting like a 15 yr old for the last 15 yrs. Regarding Kai, he was 17 when he died. He has now spent about 15 years in his new life. He has had 32-33 total years to establish and calcify behaviors, which is incredibly evident in the way he acts. He has had 15 yrs of all around great social relationships, no negative experiences that would really lead to an aversion to social events, but he still has that aversion. Why? Cus he has years of that aversion being calcified through the experiences of his past life. He became an entrepreneur at the age of like 12 cus he had 29 years of experience to pull on, not elydes native that's 12 is setting up a business venture like that, besides maybe the children of affluent merchants or nobles. He, as a toddler, set up a troop of toddler followers because he had the full intelligence granted by his full lifetime. Kai has the maturity of a 32-33 year old because thats the inevitable consequence of consciously experiencing life for 32-33 years. The only way around "maturing" is to literally be in a coma or have some cognitive disorder or brain damage, otherwise every action and experience is adding on to your personality and maturity, whether it's sitting at home eating Doritos or fighting in war. Onto the grooming thing, you obviously have a point that so long as Kai doesn't have any nefarious plans, then it's mostly chill. However, there's the problem of unintended consequences. Kai reincarnated with his full personality that he held at the age of 17 in his previous life. Even if you're of the thought process that he was immature in his previous life and experienced no maturity or growth in his 15 years of life in elydes, he is still vastly more "mature" than Val was when they first met. She developed a crush on Kai when she was like 7 (almost certainly because of the personality he reincarnated with) and has had the majority of her life at least partially shaped by that crush. Her actions, behaviors, and personality have been shaped by that crush. Kai obviously did not intend for that to happen, Kai is not a bad person because someone had a crush on him. However, it is still true that the simple fact of him being who he is affected who she has become, in the same way that your friends have influenced your life. Val has been shaped, unintentionally, by Kai's presence in her life as someone who is mentally much older than her. It's the same reason it feels icky when you see someone marry their teacher or babysitter. Even if nothing nefarious was going on you just know that there's something wrong with that. It's why I'm a proponent of Kai and Val not only waiting until they're both of legal age, but also of them both entering relationships with other people first if they are to ever enter a relationship with each other at all. I think Val should date one of her peers first rather than living in the shadow of Kai's influence her whole life. At the end of the day, I know I'm the outlier in these comments. However, my thoughts on the issue ultimately come from a place of understanding the issue at hand
