In the near future, I'm taking a more practical approach when it comes to long series (details coming soon). However, I'd be sorely remiss if I didn't make sure to watch the couple of long series we've all been looking forward to for...like a year or more at this point? They've always made a consistent showing in the polls and it's about damn time they get a turn.

There's also a recent series I dabbled in, thinking it wouldn't knock me over hard enough to add to my Long Series Problem. Well. Here I am. Knocked over. Dammit.

Anyway, which one are we watching next?

The Spirealm is the only adaptation of danmei novel there, and as someone who always tries to support adaptations (because we got so few of them), I have to vote for The Spirealm. But really love Ultimate Note too.

my sister and i have been waiting for you to react to "ultimate note" and we hope that you will watch it one day! we are still obsessed with this universe even years after watching it. it is based on a book series (which where originally fanfiction btw) and the author didn't intend the "bromance" to be this strong but he agreed with fans that it was definitely there. also fun fact joseph zheng (aka zheng shunxi), who played fang duobing in "mysterious lotus casebook" plays one of the main characters in this.

For ultimate note, will you react to all the series adaptation in order of the books "DMBJ" or just "Ultimate note" which is based largely on Volume 4, Volume 5, Volume 6, and Volume 7 of the Daomu Biji novel series.

I'm actually fine with either of those. I've seen one (surprised me how good it was) and the other two are already on my watch list so it's a win win (win?) situation. I just hope that all of them will be covered eventually. Be it in a year, two or even further in the future.

I hope you'll find room to react to Squid Game s2 as well! It has soooo many moments that could be read as queer 👀 Plus, there is actual representation in one character as well, so not only subtext!!

Ghosting

Ultimate Note - based on the middle part of a long IP series called The Lost Tombs. It's crunchy and compact but might be off putting for people who want the full story. That being said it's a good place to start considering. The Spirealm - based off a Horror BL novel they replaced the Horror element with game elements but the vibe is very much there. Also they did cut out some of the book arcs due to length but it's still pretty dang good. Fangs of Fortune - while I haven't watched more then two eps it's still very pretty.

Spirealm seems like it could be nice but fangs of Fortune looks more promising....so I would go with that. I watched four or five episodes of Spirealm (they were weirdly cut) and it seems fine but I am not hyped, though other people seem to be so maybe the series gets way better. I just watched like the first ac, so what do I know. I personally am just more interested in Fangs of Fortune but whatever you do....if its a long series again, I watch whatever it will be and I hope what will be chosen wont dissapoint you. Because I love the old long format shows. I get that they are a hassle to go through and sadly a lot of promising Priest series seem to have been cancelled for 2025 due to more cencorship. Fuck that. I am still mad about Justice in the Dark aka Silent Reading. The book is amazing and the show seemed to have captured the book very well....apart from the weird name changes for no reason. It would have been so amazing.

I know the other 2 are long wished for but I still choose Fangs of Fortune. It looks so good! I watched the first 2 episodes in the Watch Party and I watched them again with Brittany and I would watch those same 2 episodes again! I'm going to watch the rest of the show soon either way, but I would like to wait to watch it with Brittany.

I've seen the first season of Dungeon Meshi, without knowing how shippable it was ( or how D&D it was). There's a liveblog on the Gaywatch Tumblr, but I'm hoping to do an on camera rewatch ahead of season two whenever it drops. <3

Dang it, I had a feeling I should have asked if you've seen it off camera, did you watch the dub or sub ver? Maybe on the rewatch you could watch the other ver, to see/have some difference.

Love both Fangs of Fortune and The Spirealm, and they are both so worth watching, this was such a hard choise! Both have had me crying, laughing and more or less screaming and squealing too, given me new blorbos to fixate on and yeah. Had to go with FoF because it has made me slightly more unwell, but honestly Im happy either way. (Havent yet gotten into Ultimate Note yet, tho its been on my list as well and have heard good things about it too.)

I'm reading it right now (I'm about halfway) and the adaptation is kind of faithful (so many references and nods to the original novel) and yet completely different (I do understand the need for those changes though). So far there was only one "story" that wasn't covered on the show (understandable, they can't cover everything). The novel is better in explaining some things that were just glossed over in the show and it has way more gore (and gay of course). But I prefer the stories in the show more (it's the solving versus just passing through type of approach to the doors). I would say that only about 10% was a new information for me, the rest was on the show. I was trying to be as vague as possible to avoid spoiling anything.

I would love to find more on this but there is literally only this twitter thread and the og weibo posts who found the comparison of some composition shots - and i personally have seen some similar things through out other dramas - do you know if the story is also accused of being plagiarized?

some people were saying the plot was similar but imo its just the basic premise the direction the plot takes is very different to tianbao (personally a few of the examples used look like superficially similar shots used in many dramas. however i acknowledge gjms notoriety for plagiarism)

I sadly don't know much more about it, I'm sorry if I jumped into conclusion too soon. It was all over my Twitter when it was coming out, so I took it as a sure thing (but people were probably mostly referring to this one thread or the Weibo post) and I haven't watched it yet, so I just saved that thread as something good to know about if I will watch it in future.

nah your good, the dude did plagiarize in the past with his own novel (he lost in court and wverything) - but then again he was later accused for Yin Yang Master too, only because the magic circles look similar to Doctor Strange (nothing ever happened tho)

Like, I downloaded the episodes and the english subs literally as people were making them, but somehow I never got around to starting it😅 ADHD brain tripping me up as usual... So hoping for that one! Wouldn't mind an Ultimate Note rewatch either, though

Gosh both Spirealm and FoF are good in their own way. But if I had to pick I'll definitely go with Spirealm. FoF has some really beautiful cinematography but Spirealm has a fascinating concept and story. But either ways, we'll have fun.

Spirealm made a sizable hole in my soul and completely changed me as a person However, Ultimate Note gave me one of my favourite OTPs of all time and the story that kept me up at numerous nights I haven't finished FOF yet, so can't say much yet Is it possible for you to react to all three of them at some point?... 🥺

I just finished ep 26 & 27 and wow I'm mind blown FoF is literally such a good series. It's probably going down as one of my all time favorites. It might even go above MLC for me (which was my absolute favorite last year Edit: of 2023 apparently, time is an illusion)

Haha, same! When today's call for voting came on discord, FoF was leading, then I looked again after a while and Spirealm was in the lead by 2% and now we are here with FoF in the lead yet again. This is madness. I refuse to look until the final announcement of the winner. I can't function like this :D
