wanting to enjoy the process (Patreon)

I figured out crocheting!! And I love crocheting!!Last year I was out of my mind frustrated that I couldn't make it work. Crocheting just didn't make sense to me. Not being able to get it right away just left me feeling angry, instead of motivated by what I could learn. This translates to so many things I want to learn, but why? I've been very intimidated to "properly" get started with my sewing machine, as in work on an actual project and not just have my nose in the manual, and I realise that's because I have this idea of needing to understand the craft before I try it. I should be able to navigate it flawlessly when I'm doing it - so that I can avoid mistakes and be really good at it. ...? At the back of my mind I have this irritating idea that the sole purpose to do something is to be good at it. There's no space for enjoyment, despite that being a huge reason I wanted to start to begin with. So I'm left confused. I want to do this thing because I believe I would enjoy it, but I should do it to be good at it, and if I'm not good at it I get frustrated and feel the direct opposite from enjoyment. Hm. When I was staying over at Bildflickan and Lovi's place for their wedding I asked Bildflickan"how *do* I learn how to sew clothes?", and they told me "honestly, just pick a specific project you want to do, and you'll learn from there." WHAT?? I don't have to master the entire craft beforehand? I don't have to have it all figured out before I get started? It's okay to pick this one thing I want to do.. and kind of just unravel it in the process. Mistakes are allowed?! Now, it was still a bit too intimidating to test this with my sewing machine, too much at stake. But crocheting, this I knew I sucked at - I couldn't get worse than I was last time right? So I inadvertently gave myself permission to mess up when I decided "I want to crochet a flower!" The tutorial I found was beginner friendly and gentle. My first lavender flower I absolutely made mistakes with, but I actually liked the process of this because I wasn't so obsessed with the result of it. Now I made more, and more and more flowers and suddenly I realised I knew what she meant when she said to "chain seven, do a slip stitch, double crochet"! I was actually learning not just how to make a lavender flower, but also how to crochet. And I was loving it!I don't have all the answers yet, but I'm ready to explore how to make a pillow, or perhaps a pair of shorts, or a t-shirt - on my sewing machine. Mistakes and all, I'm willing to enjoy the process. ☃️🌙
