So....that last video about OpenAI hoarding RAM was a doozy, wasn't it? As such, we imagine you will have questions and/or thoughts you want to voice - and so...VOICE THEM BELOW!

Next week is Thanksgiving Week anyways, so let's get this one done early! Anything involving AI, PC Hardware, shortages, or the markets in general is fair game for this one - just make sure to be as concise, respectful, and insightful as possible to have your submissions considered!

Say the AI bubble pops tomorrow and by next week the hyperscalers are trying to cancel their current orders rather than place new ones. How quickly would this translate into tangible price drops for consumers?

Nathan Schied

Someone made a video discussing this AI bubble, and they pointed out that unlike past bubbles funded by debt, this one is funded by these huge companies unleashing huge piles of cash stored overseas, that was released due to some change in trumps tax rules. One could still make the argument that spending all of this on a poor investment will hurt their valuations eventually, but between that, and the fact that they’re making money - my normie parents THINK they’re getting enough value from chat gpt to pay for it - This seems like it could carry on for a while. While it sucks, and I hate how the ai space is today, I’m sure it’ll be more widely useful eventually given how “.com” is, in 2025. My question is What does AI usage look like when it matures? The same distribution as websites with the large few getting most of the subscribers? Most people running them locally like they do with personal software or games, but mostly made by big corporations? Or will a program be made where each person trains their own, on their own data for specific needs that they have?

Got a kit of Corsair Vengeance 64GB RAM at Micro Center for $380 two days ago. PCpartpicker says it has long been a $200 kit but similar tier Corsair kits now go for $600+, while Newegg and Corsair's own store list them for $800 and $840+, doubled again from the already high price from two days ago. Mainstream gaming 2x16GB DDR5-6000 CL30 is $442 at Corsair store, almost 4x September prices at the same store, the price history lines are sometimes literally off the charts at PCpartpicker and still haven't leveled off. Some popular brands are less extreme at "only" 150% increase from 2 months ago. Corsair feels a 150% increase is far too cheap for the current market. What do you think they know that the rest of the market doesn't?

Nathan Schied

Where will individuals be left in the future? In past bubbles like crypto mining all of those GPUs were released letting us get cheap hardware eventually. Even old servers and supercomputers get reused as someone’s new home server project 10 years later, but all of the silicon going into AI seems single purpose, not useful for much other than training models, and with the crazy power consumption and cooling requirements, it all seems like it will be ewaste when these AI racks get retired. I’m not going to be upgrading my house electrical and hooking up waterlines to run one of those, no matter how cheap they get. It makes sense that the new components go to the highest bidder, I get that, but I’m concerned that even on the used market we’ll still be starved of components that We actually want going forward.

How long can they leverage more cash for Sam Altman and OpenAI when company burns with astonishing rate that funding and Oracle deal has backfired now....

Thanks to the ram shortages, now I really have a reason to wait for zen 7 instead of getting zen 6. Hang in there little 5800X3D.

MJ

Hey Tom. I don't know the fab side of the house too well, so really just curious from your knowledge if this leaves a door open for intel. Didn't intel create their own memory for their Optane line? Since this pricing can go for a pretty long time, and the price or RAM being highly profitable, would it take a ton to intel to spin up memory production and start earning from it?

Mark Smith

With AI and massive RAM demands exploding, will console makers use this as an excuse to lock in permanently higher prices for set-top boxes? Could that actually backfire and make PC gamers like me hold onto our rigs longer? Still rocking a 5800X3D + 4070 Ti Super here, and I’m in no rush to upgrade. Games I play and my workflow don’t need more yet. Thank you, Tom, and most likelyDan! Thank you, Dan, whether you're there or not, lol.

Ok Tom, I watched the video. What are the odds that SPECIFICALLY Corsair sold back much of their RAM chip allocation to, say, SK Hynix? Their prices seem extremely out of line with the competition in the last few days, and that would make sense if they have very little supply to sell. Corsair is a publicly traded company that is losing money as of their November 4 report and they just suddenly announced they are replacing their CFO *yesterday.* If there is one company willing to take extreme measures in the consumer RAM market right now, it's probably Corsair.

Paul's Hardware YouTube just dropped a build video sponsored by Corsair. The RAM kit they used was 2x48GB, affiliate Amazon link was $1,447. Yikes.

Will the rise in RAM prices have an impact on the final specs of next-gen consoles?

Deadeyes

At least a few years for anything to happen.

Deadeyes

With DDR5 RAM getting so expensive, do you think Bartlett Lake will finally have its day as a budget gaming killer paired with DDR4???? /s

Deadeyes

It will translate to widespread economic disaster around the same time, so the RAM price aspect isn't actually going to be very helpful.

Deadeyes

Off topic, but with Fossilize existing as a Steam feature on Linux, what is preventing it from being implemented on Windows too? I desperately want that feature, but I have games I play regularly that don't work on Linux because of anti cheat.

Falto

How long do you expect the shortages on ram do you guys think will last? How much more expensive will gpus get for the foreseeable future?

Girthmaxxer

OpenAI buying up and hoarding RAM is yet another reason why Sam Altman needs to be shot into the sun. Do you think that OpenAI hoarding RAM so their competitors can't access it is an act of desperation from Altman? Altman is aware that AI investment is a bubble and is especially sensitive about the fact that OpenAI can't possibly pay for all of its investment in compute given its meager revenue.

AI Generated Fish

One thing that I don't think gets addressed enough is that unlike the dot com collapse, it's not just venture capital that is pouring money into these things, it's Google, Meta, Apple, & Microsoft, all trillion dollar companies with other revenue streams that can conceal their inability to monetize AI.
