Recently Intel seemingly started to distance itself from the ARC Brand...and we welcome it here at MLID! Seriously - Intel's Partners call ARC "Rat Poison for Sales", and frankly there's no real need for both "ARC" and "Xe. It's redundant.

So...let's talk about horrible naming schemes! Whether it's a console, laptop, monitor, console, GPU, or CPU - write in below with what YOU believe have been some of the dumbest, most confusing, or most ineffective naming schemes in gaming history! Tom and Dan will have their own prepared, but we obviously want to hear from you!

You have ~3 hours to submit below!

AMD's short-lived mobile APU naming scheme: 7X20, 7X30, 7X35, 7X40 all "launched" in the same year and representing Zen2, Zen, Zen3.5 and Zen4 cores. No other product naming scheme is even close.

Wii U- a name so bad it killed the console because nobody knew what it was. If the Switch ports of Wii U games sold better than the native versions, then you've done something wrong.

The RDNA4 naming convention change is honestly cringey. AMD is apparently so desperate to be compared to Nvidia, and also thinks consumers are too dumb to understand the naming convention difference between the two brands that they just had to change things up. I can't wait for them to use hypothetical RDNA5 10000 name as an opportunity to change the system yet again.

At least we got a code wheel out of it!

The progression of Xbox console names are such that no future generations will be able to make sense of it without a Wikipedia article. There isn't a theme or sequence to it at all, aside from an S being weaker than an X in the same generation. And even then, that gap is different depending which generation you are talking about

Girthmaxxer

At least with that naming scheme, it was consistent and you could tell the product tier and architecture from the number

Nolen

It's poetic irony that they named their console after the onomatopoeia of a distress siren, and proceeded to have emergency-level sales numbers.

BespokeEP

Every Xbox console lol. Windows... I'm convinced Microsoft doesn't know how to count. I predict that they will call Magnus just "Xbox". Because they seem to want to confuse customers... Or maybe they will call it "this is actually an Xbox"

How about nVidia's current laptop GPU naming scheme, which is nothing? In the past, we had max-Q and max-P models to denote performance within a class. Now you have to dig down deep to get figure out what the rated wattage is. A higher tier GPU with low wattage can be worse than a lower tier GPU with higher wattage. It seems like they are deliberately obfuscating the tiers of their products. Hmmmm...

Monitors in general are horrendous, but I think that the 2025 Asus Glossy WOLEDs take the cake. They have two different 32 Inch 4K Glossy WOLEDs. One of them is the ROG Strix OLED XG32UCWMG and the other is the ROG Strix OLED XG32UCWG. The difference is the one with the extra "M" in it is 240hz and the other is 165hz.

As much as I love the 360 that name was so bad even at the time in middle school when I thought it was cool, just wondering what they will name the next one, 720? Only to be sideswiped with Xbox one again repeating the process but happy Xbox two will be next surely, but alas the series s and x was born, don’t ever let someone say Microsoft hasn’t been consistent with Xbox. They’ve consistently been sideswiping us with names for 20 years.

Dark Side of the Force

There would be never a good enough naming scheme for the PC world. I think people love to look at Apple and their "simple" name, while also overlooking the performance difference between SKU of the same "name" might be huge. Meanwhile for PC, you would always have more SKU, more retailers' specific models, more price bracket, this and that hence the naming will never be "easy". I think best compromise is just to hide the complexity away, as in to give the chip/product a sound name for the normies and attach a model code that's easy to understand for the IT department and the tech savvies and such. It is clear that there is too much confusion, too much SKU that can be slim down, but expecting all of PC to be condense to Apple-Like is just unrealistic.

The entire monitor scene is atrocious. Just pick a random brand and pick a random monitor. If you say the name of that monitor everything in your room will start floating because you inadvertently said a mythic spell.

Poor names aside I will forever believe that the 3DFX Voodoo is the coolest name for a gpu ever with BFG gtx and Big Navi coming in a close second.

It's definitely not the worst, but Intel's persistence on being the company of a thousand lakes is kinda funny. We've had everything from lakes of coffee to whiskey to rockets to arrows to apparently soon hammers and even titans.

nvidia triggers my OCD like nothing else. They're the masters of inconsistent naming. When going from 3-digit GPU names to 4, they went 700, 900 > 1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000. That's not how numbers work! Even worse, there was the 1600-series thrown in for good measure, which also is the only time they've had a 4-digit model name that didn't contain 2 "unused" 0s. Why have 4 digit model names if 2 of the digits are otherwise always 0s? Drop the 0s and call them the GeForce 56, 57, 58, 59. Plus, the Super refreshes and Ti tier "bumps". 4070 Ti Super? THERE ARE 2 UNUSED ZEROS! Just use one those instead adding ridiculous words and abbreviations to the name of products THAT ALSO EXIST without the additional words and abbreviations. Both could obviously replace the 0s with other numbers. The 5070 Ti Super is one of the dumbest named products in history! It could have been 5070, 5170 (instead of Ti), 5075 (Super), 5175 (Ti Super). OR ANYTHING ELSE besides "Ti Super". GeForce 1030 was sold with GDDR and DDR versions. SO many cards with the same name that were sold with 2 different amounts of memory (and as recent as 2023?) The 5000 series lineup had basically every model besides the 5090 bumped down a performance tier- the 5060 had performance like a 50-tier card, 5070 was more like a 60-tier, etc.

What drugs do you think marketing people take to come up with some of these monitor sku names. What would a no nonsense monitor line up name scheme look like ?

TMCPayton

AMD Ryzen AI MAX+ Pro 395 Cramming AI into a knockoff Apple product name. Pretty bad.

TMCPayton

How about the Golden Rabbit Edition Radeon cards which launched after the year of the Golden Rabbit ended.

TMCPayton

AMD high end GPUs during GCN: R9 390 -> R9 Fury X -> RX Vega 64 -> AMD Radeon VII Lack of continuity made it hard for buyers to follow this.

moonsy

Monitors are the worst offenders imo. Can't think of any name that contained much info about the product besides the size. It's a running Gag on monitors unboxed. Also the names are often very similar. When trying to find some answers to problems I had with my monitor, I got results for another monitor where the name was the same except for 1 letter.

BespokeEP

I still remember buying my 3DFX Voodoo 2 12MB card from Radio Shack and pairing it with a AMD K6-2 processor... And if I remember correctly 32MB of RAM ..Daaaaaayum it in felt good to be a gangster in 1998 lol

Wund3rBr3d

AMD is the worst offender by far. Especially their mobile line up.

magneticmanul

Sometimes there are accounting reasons for this. If you kill a brand that has "value" then you can claim that "loss" for tax purposes. AMD had a very weak brand in the embedded market, Xilinx had a very strong brand - yet AMD killed the Xilinx branding on FPGA products.

magneticmanul

I assume McKinsey has a division that sells strategic brand consulting for like $10M and the final recommendation to every Fortune 500 company is always "copy Apple." The guy who paid the consultants would look like an idiot if they didn't follow their advice, right?

magneticmanul

Intel doesn't market those names to consumers at least. "Core Ultra Series 3" is the brand.

magneticmanul

Nvidia really made an interesting situation because consumers "feel" the product stack is easy to understand, but the actual performance you can expect (power) is buried in the spec sheet or completely unpublished.

magneticmanul

I vote for "Xbox (2027)" Reboots - so hot right now

magneticmanul

Microsoft will never know how many sales they lost by not simply calling their consoles Xbox, Xbox 2, etc. Sony has resisted the rebranding stupidity for decades and that's commendable.

BespokeEP

The files are IN the Xbox. Derelict Box.

Jen-Hsun Huang, AI is not circular

1030? Try the 640 lol! GF116 with 1.5 or 3 GB DDR3 GK107 with 1 or 2GB DDR3 787mhz GK107 with 2 or 4GB DDR3, 900mhz GK107 with 1 or 2 GB GDDR5 950mhz GK208 with 1GB GDDR5 clocked 1046mhz

AngelOfCake

Don't forget Wii to Wii-U. A naming scheme so bad for a new console that the average buyer through it was a new peripheral for the Wii.

Morkalan

but but but just think of the number of elephant.png files that one could fit in that one 12GB GPU! hint: its almost four!

HaveAGoodDay

Do you think that Nvidia is going to have the Blackwell series constructed on Intel node to prepare for the APU Nvidia graphics? This could be like a test case to show that Intel can do what Nvidia needs, and if it's on a better node it may be what they make the super or the TI of the 5090 out of. That would kill two birds with one stone, it would test that Intel can actually make Nvidia stuff, and it would give Nvidia a new product for next year
