The next episode of Broken Silicon will see us be joined once again by Matt of Alderon Games! Obviously he will have A LOT to say about recent XBOX, PlayStation, and Switch 2 news! However, he can also pretty much talk about anything having to do with AMD, Intel, Apple, or Nvidia. Seriously - he was at the forefront of the Raptor Lake failures drama, the PS5 Liquid Metal Issues, is currently testing Apple's Neo Laptop for his game, and even did a die shrink on why PhysX support being dropped for Blackwell really was a big problem.

Greetings Tom and Matt! Tom has described in depth the upcoming Zen6 and Zen7 architectures, which will increase the core counts of consumer / Ryzen-class CPUs. At the same time, AMD is preparing an 8-core option. I'd like to hear Matt's perspective on this: will the increased core counts enable new things? (Not just for gaming, but for everyday computing as a whole.) Or will 8 cores still be "enough" for the foreseeable future?

The appeal of ray/path-tracing for PS6 and Helix lies in the saved time from not having to do baked lighting. That would mean no fallback and basically requires dropping support for the current gen, vast majority of (current) PCs and most likely the Switch 2. How soon do you think devs will realistically do that, aside from a few tent pole titles from 1st party. 2030 at the absolute earliest?

Cleansweep

Hey Tom and Matt, How do you feel about the GDC leaks about the Steam Machine's performance and verification targets? I find it really weird that they don't have display resolution and legibility testing, because legibility has been a huge problem, even for games that have cross platform releases.

The big innovation in graphics with the PS4 generation was physically based rendering. While PS5 and Xbox Series X|S had support for lighter ray tracing, SSDs were the most important part of the gen. With the PS6 and Xbox Helix, games being built with ray tracing as a requirement will become the norm combined with ML upscaling. Do you think next generation console uplifts will be perceived as larger than the move to the PS5/Xbox Series X|S gen if they are visually noticeable through effects like RTGI or path tracing?

Hello Matt and Tom, There was a little bit of talk about native TAA and upscaler. Do you think that game developer are relying too much on hardware vendor solution like DLSS ? Do you think native TAA should be better ? What do you think about Nixxes doing an upscaler for Death stranding 2 ?

Nicolas Terroir

With the steam machine and project helix, will PC become game store specific depending of your hardware ?

Girthmaxxer

What do you think about Microsoft's GDC reveal of Advanced Shader Delivery through DirectX where pre-compiled shaders are included with game downloads?

Nicolas Terroir

Crimson Desert look very impressive and doesn't seem to need to a super powerful PC. It is using a proprietary engine. Do you think that Unreal Engine 5 is too big and too slow and is hurting new games performance ?

Nicolas Terroir

Do you think that is Ray tracing improving graphic or helping game developer to shorten the time they need to make there games ?

Nicolas Terroir

Why old games still look incredible without needing an incredible Gpu ? For example, ryse, crisis or titanfall 2 are still pretty nice.

Hey Matt! Hope all is well. I have been pouring over the documents and postings from Microsoft about their new tools for various features for DirectX. I will pick out the tool that I think is most important: DIrectX Dump files. It is about damn time that they provide a way for developers and hardware vendors to natively analyze bugs and crashes from the API. From what I can tell this tool is going to make a huge difference in being able to sort out the more painful issues. However what gave me pause is that out of all the hardware vendors, AMD is the only one with additional documentation on the matter and possibly MS's closest partner on this new tool (from what I can see.) AMD promised full support for all their CPUs, APUs and GPUs for this venture. From your standpoint, do you think this will be a revolutionary step or an evolutionary move into better debugging and development pipeline resolutions on PC? A lot of gamers are happy to keep playing older games. From a developer's perspective, how much of this is a blessing and how much a curse? For a console maker like Sony, it's easier to sell new hardware and software if gamers are buying the latest games though, so do you think that could be a factor in why Sony are doing a poor job on backwards compatibility for old games? ie they see old games as competition that costs them money.

Mark Smith

New games fuel the industry, but how much does backward compatibility credibly drive sales of new hardware and software in a competitive multi-platform landscape? Thank you, Tom, and Matt!

Xbox has always used x86, the first 3 gens of PlayStation were completely custom hardware. MS is a $4trillion company and Sony is a $150b company. BC is such a waste of time and money. XB spent the entire Xbox One gen working on BC and still has less than 500 total games from the XB360 and OG Xbox gens. Sony spent the PS4 gen releasing some of the best new IP in the history of gaming. Jim Ryan was right, who wants to play these old dated games over a brand new game? Remember BC doesn't improve gameplay or do anything but steady the frame rate and sharpen the image. But if BC is really that important, it's good to know that Sony has over 2x the amount of BC games as Xbox simply from PS4

BespokeEP

Absolutely. The fact that devs haven't even really used the SSD's to their potential is possibly more exciting for next gen, and a CPU that can really do amazing things in physics, destruction ...but having Path Tracing for Horizon 3 and Spiderman 3 will be insane

BespokeEP

That's Doctor Lisa Nvidia to you

Uncharted 5 as a launch title, who says no?

Hermen's March

Jim Ryan was short sighted, just like any other corporate knob-gobbler that has your take. Their is always the profit incentive to push for popular IPs, but that same mindset drove them to pursuing a dozen different GaaS that have failed or folded, one after the other. PlayStation isn't MS. They have three entire generations of libraries unaccounted for, and the profit incentive from a far larger fanbase than Xbox has right now makes a big difference in terms of potential revenue, but that's the point. The spirit of the company, and the initial IP their platform was founded on, are a grounding element for them. The gamers and devs within PS should have these games easily available to remind them of the stories and mechanics that built PS into the multi-billion dollar company it is now. That's part of the reason why GoW remains popular, and the industry is forgetting the core initiatives that made them successful today. They're too busy chasing trends to remember that they used to set them. PS pioneered in the 32-bit era with 3D games that blended story telling, and gameplay that people actually wanted. Not these service slop games styled and written for the "modern audience". They're a myth, they don't exist the way HR and millennials think they do. It drives the creativity into a narrow space that checks all the wrong boxes, and by doing so alienates the core of gamers that would care and drive interest in these titles. Without Backwards Compatibility, you end up with a whole slew of Concords, and executives closing down studios that chased that same trend to stay relevant within the environment the PS leadership created. Idc if YOU don't care, but for the sake of posterity in this space we need reminders of what made gaming great, and there is no reason to let these games disappear or fall out of memory just because their isn't an immediate benefit. Preserving the culture of the original PS is just as important, but I don't expect "LiNe Go Up" types to understand cultural investment as compared to a financial one.

Hermen's March

What do we think is the timeline for AMD's next gen? I've heard that Zen 6 might get delayed to late 2027, maybe even pushing back RDNA 5. I've held out on upgrading so far, but if this generation seems like it will go on for much longer, I may just bite the bullet. Thanks for any, and all input.

Tell me how you really feel.. don't forget to swallow

Hi Tom and Matt, If project helix dev kits are coming out early 2027, when do you think PS6 dev kits would arrive especially when Kepler L2 recently said on neo gaf a few days ago that helix along with both PS6 console and handheld are still aiming for a holiday 2027?
