What else can we really talk about this week besides DLSS 5? Specifically - many people have pointed out that DLSS 1 also received immense pushback when it launched...but we believe these situations are NOT the same. Maybe we're wrong, maybe we're not, and maybe you can change our opinions!

Write-in below with your memories of DLSS 1, your thoughts on DLSS 5, and opinions regarding the state of upscaling tech in general! You have ~18 hours to write-in below!

I would say my first gut reaction is that DLSS 5 is pretty terrible. However, there were some scenes that I thought actually looked pretty good (see below for list of scenes). The scenes where the difference is less obvious tend to look far better, less is more for my taste. My only concern is if Nvidia is going to provide the sufficient tools to game developers to custom tune DLSS 5 to each of their games, and keep their artistic vision intact. If Nvidia does, I do actually believe it'll be a game changer. If they don't, every game is going to look like the same averaged out image you get from AI diffusion image generators. If we thought every game looked the same now, oh boy! - 3rd scene in the hogwarts legacy video of the girl standing on the city block - Last scene of the Zorah demo with the vines on the building - Both scenes from EA FC (this one is the best with faces but still uncanny valley)

Making lemonade out of lemons. As long as it can’t be forced enabled through the driver then I think it could be fine. I can see the usefulness in sports games the background crowd can be artistically made out of pixels in the shape of a smiling face and DLSS5 make them look good or even open world games with trees and environments instead of static LOD that pop in and out with distance they can dynamically change more realistically with distance because of ai. Or even character creators, upload a photo of yourself if you want or if anything and ai uses the games art to be in the game. As long as devs have control at the end of the day, even still like myself I’m sure devs would rather this didn’t exist at all.

My name is the community’s reaction to it all, here’s to hoping they see the outcry and call it an early April fools joke and un launch it. Even though it will be a blatant lie, I think it’s a lie people will happily accept.

I hate how there isn't a good process or tool to compare different AA and upscaling tech in motion. Most public analyses are still primitive, manual frame pixel peeping. If we had some more public tooling to test these technologies, more 3rd party analyses would push 1st party vendors to improve or there would be more 3rd party vendor-engnostic AA/upscaler to be made (like lossless scaling).

Back when DLSS frame generation was first announced, the reactions were not as negative as for DLSS 5's announcement. But as it got tested the worse the reactions became and I don't think it's really recovered since. If DLSS 5 is to be salvaged like DLSS 1, what would you say are the most critical issues that need to be solved?

Chris Rijk

If DLSS 5 is only viable on a 5090, would you say that makes it DOA even if the visual issues are solved?

Not related to DLSS, but have you heard anything about these rumors circulating around right now that AMD's next Adrenalin 26.3.1 due to launch in the next couple of days will bring FSR 4.1 to RDNA 3 and 2? Ancient Gameplays did a video about that and it looks like the speculation is comming from a translated post somewhere so I feel like it's still unlikely, but I have at least a tiny bit of hope. Outside of that, FSR 4.1 should be released regardless and it looks like a decent improvement to sharpness and details especially in foliage and atleast unofficially, you can run it on older generation GPUs. In terms of image quality, I'd say it is somewhere between DLSS 4.5 and 4.0 or at least on par with the latter.

If you do not record this episode with a tik tok beauty filter, we will riot.

Imagine questioning progress! Next you’ll say you want the game to look like what the developers actually intended.

Okay, a serious comment this time. Now that Black Myth: Wukong has patched out frame generation from its console builds, opting for "Lumen: Off" to hit 60 fps instead, do you think it says something about the state of the industry that only PC ports are adopting these new AI techniques? Even Sony & Microsoft are only investing R&D into spatial resolution technology, with no PSSR or "Windows Auto SR" Frame-Gen in sight.

DLSS was advertised as getting higher fps for minimal to no visual downgrade, which sounds great. The problem with DLSS 1.0 was that it didn't do a very good job delivering on that. Now with DLSS 4 and 4.5, it looks VERY close to native, and IMO there isn't a lot of reason not to use it, especially when playing at over 1080p. The problem with DLSS 5 is that the concept of the entire technology is unwanted from the start. What I would like to know is whether it will give everyone the same output, using Grace from RE9 as an example. If you and I both enable DLSS 5, will we both get the same Instagram model face, or will it spit out two entirely different images? Are we even playing the same game at that point?

If dlss 5 is the future of gaming, I may finally get into retro gaming 🫠. I think they were desperate to shove gen AI into gaming to improve the sentiment around gen AI. CEOs were openly talking about how the negative sentiment around gen AI was bad for user adoption and their future/stock/bottom line. So coasting off a popular technology like dlss to sell gen AI to gamers could be the strategy here maybe? Also more vendor lock in and more gen AI use in general is good for Nvidia.

DLSS 5 is insulting for how it tramples over artistic integrity and design decisions. It looks like a yassify filter that a loser online would apply to female characters they think aren't "hot" enough. Billionaires desperate to shove AI slop into everything have contempt for artists and creatives. AI can't make art, it can only regurgitate people's existing work without intentionality. One thing that hasn't been mentioned enough is how DLSS 5 removes atmosphere from games such as fog, colour grading and post-processing effects and makes games look more generic.

Well, I asked a week or two ago about “next generation” features in PC gaming to set it apart from PS6. It looks like I may not build another PC for a while after I get a PS6 if this is the best they can come up with. Do you think this is a result of being out of touch or just not wanting to dedicate more silicon to actual rendering instead of AI performance?

Games aside, this tech should’ve been introduced for restoring old media or up scaling media old grainy footage. Heck I’d fully embrace it all negatives aside if it was capable of remaking the final season of Game Of Thones. Joking of course, (sorta).

The thing I didn't understand about the push back on DLSS 5 especially for Grace, is she is wearing the exact same amount of makeup in the original shot, the only thing that DLSS 5 did was added shadows to make her face not look so flat, increased the texture quality and resolution of her features, and made a more realistic contrast between her lips and skin tone. Her hair is also the same colour, it is your eyes playing tricks on you because they added shadows. The thing I don't get is why do people have an issue with this when DLSS, RT/PT, and Ray Regeneration has been doing the same thing to trees, foliage, rocks, bricks, etc for years without any push back at all.. what changed? I never heard people scream that the artist vision has been ruined because AI made the trees look more realistic. I'm sorry but the hate felt forced from most comments on the net

I thought DLSS 1 wasn't very good and was gonna get dropped soon, as Nvidia had done with a couple proprietary technologies. DLSS 5 is not at all comparable since it radically changes the look of the game. Up until now I think upscaling was in a pretty good spot actually. Xess, FSR and DLSS all look good enough to be usable in most scenarios. FSR should be supported on previous RDNA, otherwise we're golden. Imo they should focus on better performance next. Make the presets cheaper to run and add universal support for dynamically adjusting resolution and/or preset to hit a performance target.

TheParadoxy

Nvidia, AMD, and Intel are all focusing on AI and ignoring the consumer market. We all see it. Who has the most opportunity to turn things around, win back gamers, and how do they do it?

I’m concretely in the camp that DLSS 5 is a huge technological leap and impressive. It can help last-mile improvements in photorealism, and be implemented with the control of a designer and with original intent and controls. I’m a professional designer, though not in video gaming. What I see quite clearly is a tool that changes the way you can deliver top notch results, can be used optionally, and will undoubtedly improve over time. The fact that this uses your geometry and textures and maintains the same image over the whole game is what impresses me the most. I can’t wait to see where this is headed if this is the first step.
