This week we've seen PS5 Price increases, evidence the DRAM bubble is collapsing, and rising costs due to the war in Iran....at this point gamers should just wait for next gen hardware, right? Well, either way that's what we will be discussing on DS this week!

Also - the FSR 5 April Fools joke got Tom today! As such, also feel free to write-in with what you want from AMD's response to DLSS 5. You have ~5 hours to submit below!

Jen-Hsun Huang, AI is not circular

AMD’s response to DLSS5 should be simple. Give up dGPU. It’s already over. We won, our true competitor, Intel, is DOA.

I think AMD's best response to DLSS 5 is by simply not doing nothing. I and others have a strong feeling that DLSS 5 is going to flop and is a PR suicide, so unless AMD is stupid and wants to copy Nvidia's mistake they should just ignore it and focus on giving us a good uplift in games on their next gen gpus.

Dark Side of the Force

They best should just improve on FSR4 and then push them to older cards and APU, that's all....

Given the level of outrage on display over the Ps5 price increase from internet commentators, one would be led to believe that all of these people were going to buy a ps5 next month and had their hopes dashed by Sony. However, it does make the Switch 2 more appealing now, and if Sony can get the Ps6 to $500 or below, the marketing basically writes itself. As far as what Amd can do about Dlss 5, start working on Ai game devopment tools for devs to reproduce dlss5 like output, but using raster and Rt. Will it work? No idea, it would also take a huge block of customers that have always bought Nvidia to switch to Amd, and that's like getting your parents to switch from iPhone to Android.

Lol you read it? I mean the first word tells you it's fake, and even the title of the article. AMD is no longer numbering FSR

AMD's near-term response to DLSS5 should be obvious: improved performance on the card you already own, including RDNA3. No need for dual 5090s, no destruction of game dev art design, just incremental improvement of a feature people already like and use. Long-term AMD should continue to innovate beyond incremental performance and quality gains, but the short-term response to Nvidia's blunder basically writes itself.

I feel so many just have been mentally poisoned by companies use of AI. Almost everyone keeps calling everything that is generated by Generative AI "AI slop" now. It's likely everyone has been mentally trained to hate it. Personally I feel like this hate is overrated. I think of DLSS5 more of as a aesthetic filter applied over the game. Is it for everyone? No. But people like choice, right? There are literally mods that changes visuals like this in many games already. Which is why I feel like it's an overrated response. I also don't mind some of the pictures that people like to call "Instagram slop", and I feel like most people would actually like it more than the alternative. Another point why people are overreacting. Although, that is not to say I liked everything I saw. But I also didn't dislike everything I saw. Shooting down everything just because of some bad examples is an overreaction. That said, Nvidia's presentation itself was flawed and they should be ashamed. The way it was presented did garner a lot of hate, as much as the graphics itself, I think. The comparison was obviously done with very low game quality settings to maximally hype the technology, and of course they had to use dual 5090 to render the game, which is unrealistic. But I still like the idea of having a beautify filter on top of games. I like it. But of course, it should be a choice. My choice. The best thing would, of course, be an integration of the tech in the game. Selectively enable what you like, and deselect what you don't like. I would like to see AMD do this too. This is one thing that Machine Learning is good at: applying fine-grained detail to pictures. Of course, hallucinations can occur, but if it can be tweaked and fine-tuned by the developer to avoid these hallucinations, then this tech has a lot of promise. When it trickles down to consumer cards, of course. Not 5090s. Nor AMD equivalent. Because I feel FSR4 added nothing over FSR 3.1. The additional performance hit just isn't worth it. This? Now this would actually make the added cost worth it. Within reason, of course.

I was thinking that it was a play to make PS6 look more enticing, but I mean Xbox has been at these exact same prices since last October and even though they haven't sold many consoles, they have still sold a bunch. I don't get why Sony is looked at as the bad guy for everything. Do people forget that MS is worth $4Trillion and makes +$100 billion in profit every year, Sony worth around $190 billion and makes between $7-10 billion in profit. MS makes so much money, the fact that their layoffs within Xbox have exceeded 4000 this gen, and PlayStation has laid off less than 1200 is absolute insanity and both companies have closed the same number of studios. The two companies are not comparable in the slightest.

The real question for the PS5 price rise is whether anything would be able to push Sony to lower prices. Excepting everlasting peace in the Middle East and sudden restoration of supply chains, there isn't any pressure from competition to have Sony lower these prices back to their previous levels. I mean who's going to make them lower their prices? Xbox is dead, Nintendo's stuff is also overpriced for the power, Steam Machine is expected to be uncompetitive assuming it is even launching. I guess the only thing left is if people stop buying Playstation. I don't think that's happening any time soon, despite the higher prices

The problem with AI slop isn’t just that it looks bad. Aside from the mass theft of artists’ work and the ridiculous energy use, it’s deeply anti-human. A child’s crayon drawing is closer to art and has more meaning and intentionality than AI slop images. DLSS 5 tramples over the hard work and intentional design decisions of artists for a yassify filter. Games should be what artists intended them to be, not what Nvidia or the AI black box thinks they should look like. Grace wouldn’t be wearing full makeup while going to the traumatic place where her mother was murdered. It doesn’t fit with her character.

Eric Bagely

Why are the two viewed differently? I think its because Playstation has built up a ton of good will with customers, so much so that Playstation is Sony's most recognizable brand. Most of that good will has been squandered this generation, which has lead to a more severe backlash. Microsoft's most recognizable brand is still Windows, and no one, except the most loyal fans of Xbox fans, expects anything good from them, and hasn't since the Xbox One reveal.

The real need for AMD is a marketing win to twist the knife to nVidia regarding DLSS5. If AMD can do something like Sony making fun of Xbox One about DRM and borrowing games... but that's putting too much on AMD marketing. They tend to hurt themselves in confusion when nVidia makes an unforced error. Heck, didn't RNDA4 start as a fumble because of the whole "the cards and FSR4 are at CES but we can't announce anything yet?" Let's not forget that part of RDNA4's success was because nVidia kept doing stupid things with their pricing and then being having their plans screwed up for the Super refresh

Yes I read your full comment Im just amazed that you read through it, but even more amazed that someone wrote all that for a joke. I scrolled to the bottom... and it was something

This console generation is the first gen where consoles are more expensive near the end of the gen than they were at launch. The era of Sony and Microsoft subsidising console costs is over. Waiting for next gen and then buying a next gen console at launch is probably the best option. The war in Iran will increase the cost of semiconductor production due to an increasingly constrained supply of helium which is used to cool wafers during fabrication.

AMD should really focus on improving Ray Regeneration in particular for FSR 5 which feels half-finished. Digital Foundry testing showed that Ray Regeneration does not force upscaling like DLSS Ray Reconstruction does. AMD's Ray Regeneration denoises ray traced reflections but it does not upscale the reflections so they have blur and sub-native resolution artifacts. It also struggles with fine detail and contact hardening. Ray Regeneration will be important with ray traced games in next generation consoles.

Wait what?? Lighten up man

Then we're just going to have to agree to disagree. I prefer beautiful design over artists' vision any time, any place. And it's my choice. Not the artists.
