You're once - twice - three times a Gary! And we love you! Take it away with your thoughts on this week's Garden State episode!

Thought it was extremely timely that you both have an aside about the wild stuff happening on The Good Doctor the week after talk about one of the many wild events in the current final season (which I also do not watch and never will) has been circulating on twitter.

Lifesize hamster cage indeed! I'm indeed hesitant to go back an watch this movie. I'm sure it was a huge hit on DVD. Everyone had a copy of this movie. I think my husband and I had one each I'm sure.

Matthew

great episode as always but the HACKS conversation might be the most ive ever disagreed with your takes.

I’m Gen X and was past my 20s angst by the time ‘Garden State’ came out. I was also knee-deep in career-building, with a fair amount of travel, so aughties culture is a bit jumbled. Consequently, I can never keep this movie straight with Elizabethtown, and collectively refer to them as either ‘Garden-Town’ or ‘Elizabeth-State’. 🤷🏻‍♀️

So, something that ties in to both the "early-00s music" and "popularity of Scrubs" topics from this episode: I was a huge Scrubs fan back when it was on and I remember that its biggest ratings challenge was the fact that NBC decided to use it as counter-programming against American Idol. The show could never break out and become one of the true Must See TV-style mega-hits because it was essentially sacrificed against the biggest cultural behemoth of the era. This also kinda gave Scrubs (and by extension, Zach Braff) a degree of indie cred because if you were watching that show or knew who he was, then you were one of the people who wasn't watching the big monoculture thing that everyone else was watching. Looking back, it's kind of ridiculous to feel like a network sitcom was somehow counter-culture, but that feeling was real.

Napoleon Dynamite was in fact an MTV Film lol

Hearing you guys talk about how much you loved this in high school or your twenties and how poorly it has aged makes me really want to rewatch The Science Of Sleep. I was so obsessed with that in high school and college, probably haven’t seen it in 10 years.

Jamie Ellis

For what it's worth, straight guys in 2004 definitely liked Closer for obvious reasons. I remember it being another cool movie at the time that's less good on middle aged rewatch

Was honestly not sure if I would be able to make it through this episode, such is the strength of my own embarrassment at how much I loved Garden State as a teenager. Even worse, I was proud of loving it….like, I truly felt it was indicative of my good taste. But as soon as I got to Chris saying “rewatching Garden State is a lesson in forgiving yourself” I knew this episode would be a safe space.

George Wishart

“You getting to climax before me is one of the great regrets of my life” is a tremendous out of context comment 🤣🤣

In regard to other things that definitely happened in the late aughts… anyone else remember the novelty Seattle indie-synth band Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head? Fun fact, you CAN listen to their one album on Spotify despite the band itself being strictly confined to a long since neglected MySpace page… I may have taken certain aspects of “Garden State” and “OC” culture and made them not only my entire personality but a lasting career(!) I like to hope the personality stuff has chilled, but was one of my favorite work projects last year zhuzhing up the 2003 Postal Service session for the radio station where I work, emailing everyone I could think of to track down the archival photos, AND using the impending PS/DCFC shows at the Hollywood Bowl as impetus to resurface the aforementioned session on our website alongside my essay about what those bands represent to culture where I also quoted the Don Draper Carousel speech from the season one finale of “Mad Men?” Yep, it sure was.

A year ago, I threw a party where a bunch of friends came over, and we watched The Batman and Daredevil back to back and let me tell you when we got to the Evanescence “Bring Me To Life” sequence in Daredevil…I cannot describe the eruption of energy that transpired. Motherfuckers hooting and hollering and jumping on couches. A cherished memory forever. Do yourselves a favor and have a daredevil party.

Haven’t watched garden state since college when my then girlfriend had me watch cause it was her favorite movie. Rewatched it last night. Yikes!

This soundtrack remains in fairly heavy rotation for me, and it got me into Zero 7’s greatest hits album. So, a great bookend with the last episode to remind me that I have enjoyed Sia quite a bit, mainly when she was working with them.

No Way

I’ve haven’t heard the soundtrack but there is a lot of nostalgia for all those bands from that period. In fact, I’d say it’s good music to grow with.

I was 23 and just graduated from college when this came out. Naturally I was obsessed with it. Saw it 4 times in the theater after I moved out to NYC. I watched it again a couple years ago when it came on one of the many movie channels and it just does not come close to holding up. It’s one of those “oh god why did I love this so much” movies for me, like most of Kevin Smith’s filmography before RED STATE.

Between shaking the table at Ann Dowd fans and Hacks hatred, Chris chose violence this episode. Did Scrubs have, like, twenty seasons? And it was ratings challenged? Boy, it's a different world. It was also ALWAYS on Comedy Central. Maybe that's what gave it longevity; the network made money passing it on.

Olivia Davidson

As a freshman in high school when this movie came out, boy this soundtrack really defined the aspirational indie trappings of the older kids I thought were cool, right before that emo turn got all of us too. PS - if the president does it, it’s not falafel.

Jesse

Here to register my support of Chris' take on the f-slur! Young me would be truly flabbergasted how much affection I'd come to have for the term (in specific contexts, of course)

Clint

i support chris’ take on hacks! it’s fun, but anything/anyone aside from jean smart is increasingly tedious imo. have no idea why co-creator paul w downs felt the need to give his character more screentime in season two…

Yep, this movie hit me at the right time. Early twenties, just going thru a breakup and a transition from one job to the next, no idea what I was doing. I bought the soundtrack immediately after seeing the movie. It is the perfect soundtrack for existential angst and for wandering around the beach pondering BIG QUESTIONS which I did quite frequently :) You brought up a great point about Portman's age in this. I rewatched it a year or two ago and that struck me the most, it's never clear if she is still in high school? Out of high school? And it kind of disturbed me in a way because the movie sort of sets her up as mentally or emotionally immature (at least that was my take) ... and if she is a teenager then what the eff is Zach Braff doing here. I listened to the soundtrack again yesterday and maybe I'm in the minority, but I still find it great. If anything, it got me hooked on Nick Drake and that is not a bad place to land.

Boris Sagal is Katey (Married with Children) Sagal's father. He died when he walked into a helicopter rotor while making the TV movie WORLD WAR III. These are Boris Sagal facts I walk around with in my head all the time and I don't know why. I'm much older than Chris or Joe and this movie annoyed me then and probably would still, though I imagine I'd still enjoy Sarsgaard. At the time I rolled my eyes online about he "explore the infinite abyss" bit and someone said I may not have gotten the point. I was pretty sure people living up to 40 miles from any screening of the movie could get that point just by osmosis it was so blatant. Contrary to Chris, I find the less gay the music I'm listening to, the more I need my headphones to protect me from passersby judgment. But I'm also someone who wishes headphone use was universal.

Clint

a to the wonder (2012) ep would be great…

Patrick Dennis

Friends recently bought the soundtrack for me on vinyl, along with a note “Awful movie, but the soundtrack still slaps”

Jennifer (Madame) Webb

Had to pause the episode to come here and say “If the President Does It It’s Not a Bagel” and it’s a bagel-related snack (bagel bites? Bagel chips?). Eh? Eh?

Marie

May December is so clearly Natalie’s best work it’s not even a question to me

Marie

Just remembered Chris’ take on Hunger Games soundtracks. Not too much on Catch Me Now by Olivia Rodrigo!!! That song is Straight Up Good

Andy Germuga

Can’t believe you would omit the most important detail from the The Notebook Best Kiss award and the reason I will NEVER fully trust Ryan Gosling, as he is visibly chewing gum before and after they recreate the kiss on stage. AWFUL.
