We're doing a deep dive into another Entertainment Weekly Fall Movie Preview for the first time since our May miniseries on the EW Previews! In 1997, Tarantino's Pulp Fiction follow-up Jackie Brown graced that cover, and the issue leads us into conversations about the season's early awards predictions, a Best Picture nominee that got a late title change, and Fleetwood Mac's The Dance.

Sitting outside enjoying my day off and sipping a latte. THOB is the perfect companion. I am once again asking yall to do a live show. Thank you.

These EW episodes make me so happy

Paige Gray

YAY! I remember waiting every Saturday for the mail so I could spend all afternoon pouring over the latest EW. This started when I was maybe 11. The movie previews was almost better than opening presents on Christmas morning.

Awww I loved the Cinemania CD-ROMs!! ❤️

Stephanie Radcliffe

I have a great Titanic/magazine story. I was a 14-year-old babysitter, and the parents we're going out to dinner with an old friend. They said he used to crash on their couch during his film school days but was a big director now. I have no clue who this man is but he politely introduces himself and off they go. A few months later, I was flipping through Time magazine and there's a picture of James Cameron in a behind-the-scenes feature on the making of Titanic and it all makes sense. Sorry to this man.

Erin Freeman

Highly recommend the This American Life episode about the influence/media circus surrounding some high school students’ reaction to and subsequent punishment for Schindler’s List led Spielberg to make amistad.

Caroline Rothnie

Strays is played or at least mentioned on the Screen Drafts Rock vs Diesel draft. I had never seen or heard of it, but at least one person in the THOB extended podcast universe has!

David Kirk

If George Clooney did Jack Frost and / or Wild Wild West rather then Out Of Sight does his film career stall? Will he have forever been seen as a TV star who fails to translate to the big screen like David Caruso or Calista Flockhart.

Loved this episode! Going through old magazines is so fun. You guys should do a Listen to Sassy crossover

I've just started listening as I type this, and seeing that this has been posted today is 99% great, but here's the 1%: My EW subscribing started in '97, so I would've received this issue in the mail - BUT there is NO WAY I know where it would be if I somehow do still have it, and now I'm thinking about that.

As I remember it, Titanic wasn't marketed as a love story until after it opened and they realized people were responding to that. Or maybe there were two campaigns but all I remember from the trailers was the man falling and hitting the smokestack. I saw it opening weekend and we were all excited for this new action movie -- AND left thinking that's what we had seen! (And it's not like I wasn't swoony over Leo, I had all those R+J postcards on my wall.)

Amy Patrick

The movie you were thinking of was “The Substance of Fire”. My brain rot really assisted me on this one.

Listening to this brought back the exact sense memory of reading the issue on the couch in my living room. Could feel the polyester ribbing on the cushions and everything. Remember reading the bit on TITANIC and wondering how big a bomb it would be. I had an EW letter to the editor in the 1995 Holiday Preview (Casino DeNiro in his red jacket on the cover!). Larry Clark still hasn't recovered from my sick burn. They called to confirm I was the writer of the letter and then read it to me to make sure they had the wording right and it's very strange to have a not-terribly-clever thing you wrote read back to you for your approval. But they didn't offer "I wish I was better at everything" as a response option so it got printed.

I saw Spiceworld on my birthday, so I think it did open very early 1998. This episode was a hoot! Everyone on my dorm floor played the Titanic soundtrack so much on repeat that the RAs had to implement "office hours" for My Heart Will Go On. I had the movie poster, I had Rose limited edition Barbie doll, my love for Kate Winslet was forever cemented. I saw almost every single movie mentioned in the 1997 EW magazine. It was peak time for going to the movies AND we were always game to see everything opening weekend. I am much less "opening weekend" focused in my later years.

Andrew Carden

Ahem Kirstie Alley is fantastic in DECONSTRUCTING HARRY

Kara Hogan

Sorry Garys, in August 1997 I was still in utero! But loved this ep, love Titanic and added lots of 97 movies to my watch list!

George Wishart

I was 16 when this came out and I definitely had this issue and thoroughly devoured it. I got the 94 FMP issue and then soon had a subscription to EW. I saw so many of these films in the theater back then, making good use of my driver’s license (shoutout to Michigan allowing 16 year olds to have an unrestricted license immediately upon coming of age) and looking old enough where theaters didn’t ask to see my ID when buying an R-rated ticket. This was the first year I really got into the whole Oscar projections and season that I made a point to see as many contenders as possible. BTW I think the TITANIC test screening review leaks were an example of AintItCoolNews having a positive impact on the film industry. As an avid reader of those types of sites back then, it felt like those reviews really changed the online buzz about the movie and had people eager to see it rather than just being snarky every time it was brought up.

Tripp Burton

Joe, I saw The Jackal in a friend's basement in 1998. All I remember: a scene in which Jack Black gets killed in a swamp and Bruce Willis removes the paint off a car so no one can catch him! Obviously, there is nothing else memorable in that movie.

Brandon Skidmore

In the Fall of 97 I was in 4th grade and my most anticipated movie that was coming out was Flubber. I was severely disappointed and walked out of the theater with my nose in the air exclaiming “that movie is for babies.” The next month Titanic came out and my life was never the same.

Rob Watson

I think I got the Swept From The Sea trailer a minimum 16 times in theaters and then it ended up getting bumped to early ‘98 and never opening in Pittsburgh at all.

Jennifer (Madame) Webb

I’d love to hear you guys come back to the discussion of 1997 films that were big at the time vs. what had lasting impact! It was a big year for me—spring of freshman year of college when I got together with my girlfriend! We’ve now been together for 27 years. Looking at what else came out that year there are so many that had an impact on me: in addition to Wings of the Dove and Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, there’s The Fifth Element, Princess Mononoke (very late December)…and Austin Powers. What a year.

Daniel

What was I doing in the fall of 97? I was 10 years old and watching Cinemania 96 movie clips on repeat, specifically the musical number "I Will Survive" from Priscilla Queen of the Desert, for reasons which would soon become clear.

Jenny Maurer

Showgirls would be more compelling if a woman wrote the screenplay

Listening to this after the May miniseries- - loved the call out to something for everyone!
