Avert your eyes from the streaker and take it away with your thoughts on our 1973 episode!

So happy that I just watched this a couple days ago... Apparently as part of my informal 70s watch of Julie Christie films including The Go Between and Shampoo.

Zack Smith

That movie FREAKED me out when I saw the end on the SciFi Channel when I was in high school. It inspired me to research it and I wound up doing well when a film class I took had a unit on it a few years later! If you ever do a 1960s series in the "Exceptions" category, I beseech you to do the ultimate Oscar buzz film, THE OSCAR from 1966. It DID get two nominations, but it's the kind of campy disasterpiece that will give you hours of discussion, from the insane dialogue to the insane performances to the insane cameos. Look, it has Tony Bennett in his first and last dramatic perfomance as "Hymie Kelly." What more do you want?!

Robert Anton

Anyone have any good performance recommendations for this year? As they kinda covered, the most popular picks this year are all a bit predictable, not that there’s anything wrong with predictable, good work is good work. But this year seems a bit harder to find many other options. I’ll start by throwing out Robert Mitchum in The Friends of Eddie Coyle and Genevieve Bujold in Kamouraska.

Summer Wishes, Winter Dreams is such a 30 Rock title. What is that supposed to mean?!

Edith Head wins her final costume design Oscar this ceremony for The Sting and says very matter-of-factly "just imagine dressing the two handsomest men in the world and then getting this". DELIGHTFUL!

Popping in to say that David’s point about the documentary winners is very true! I have been clearing my own blindspots in the 1970s and the documentary nominees/winners have been certified bangers. The Hellstrom Chronicle was a complete trip and The Man Who Skied Down Everest was beautiful and poetic (he did fall like half as far as he skied but no judgment!!)

Corey Baesler

if anyone is interested in a deep dive on the oscar streaker robert opel, you’re wrong about released a pretty comprehensive episode on him a few months ago

J Kyle Wilsor

Y’all…DAY OF THE LOCUST!! Required Sutherland cinema, required KAREN BLACK cinema, required weirdo homosexual cinema. It’s truly, madly, deeply wild and SUCH a blast.

Sarah Lang

Is this the place where I tell my Jefferson Mays working for me while in grad school stories?

Ilario

Examples aren’t exactly huge in volume but always great to see horrror at the Oscars talk.

Traci

Thank you SO MUCH, Joe and Chris, for this May series. Absolutely phenomenal!

Benji Black

Agree with David that Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion rules (Criterion put it out on Disc). Very biting and pretty relevant. Ennio Morricone seemed like he would have had a lot of fun creating the score for that.

BODY DOUBLE HIVE WHERE YOU AT

I'm not sure how I feel about all these heterosexuals on the pod for this miniseries. I mean, there's nothing wrong with it; some of my best friends are heteros. But it just seems wrong to allow them to bring their... lifestyle into Oscars discussion.

Harriet Ware

This movie is so UNSETTLING! There’s a great scene in the play Stereophonic where the characters in 1977 discuss it and Juliana Canfield calls Donald Sutherland “very sensual, very ordinary, and very befuddled.” I totally thought Cries and Whispers was 3 hours!

John Ananias

Couple things re: other nominees: (Thing the first) I may see SUMMER WISHES, WINTER DREAMS sometime, but for now, I just love that it's the film that got Sylvia Sidney an Oscar nomination - and yes, I'm saying THAT becauuse of Juno and because of her & her music being instrumental to saving Earth in MARS ATTACKS! (Thing the second) I don't tend to want an ensemble category at the Oscars, but AMERICAN GRAFFITI is one of the quintessential, "If only the Oscars had an ensemble category!" movies. It's odd that Candy Clark is the one actor nominated for it, but if I'm asked five times which actor should have been nominated, I'd give five different answers.

Elliott Sainsbury

TIL Mike Nichols directed a film called 'The Day of the Dolphin', nominated this year for Best Sound? Starring George S Scott? With the tagline 'Unwittingly, he trained a dolphin to kill the president of the United States.' ???

Dorothy B

Decrepit as I am, I was too young to see this in real time. Saw it years later and it subsequently became a family in-joke associated with a hoodie my late mother owned that had a particularly pointy hood. 😂

Frank McCormick

Listening to the end of this episode as a pitcher named Hoffman blows this game for the Phillies, and now I hate Jordan. I think The Sting has more cultural footprint than y'all gave it credit for. Also, did Chris say something like "Jack Lemon, the greatest actor ever" or something? Was that a quote or ironic or a genuine sentiment? I've never heard that before.

Cecil Spencer

A week after watching it, and I still can't get over how glam & chic Julie Christie was in this! I wish for everyone here that we can all run through nighttime Venice in red boots.

Are you saying...weird gays who love The Cell might enjoy?

Brandon Skidmore

Joe please report back after you watch Body Double. Great movie!

Glad to hear Joe had a recent visit with AMERICAN GRAFFITI and liked it. I watched it last year before it left one of the streamers and was surprised at how much I really loved it. I watched its sequel the next day and even though it carried around a stigma, it's kind of a stealth great movie. Maybe not great, but definitely better than its rep and some truly stunning sequences.
