I did once bodily collide with Randy Harrison at the Madison Square Park Shake Shack circa 2011, and I can’t speak for his experience, but my loins have never forgotten.

@Garys, any other favorite documentaries from the 70s? I just watched and loved Harlan Country USA thanks to the rec on the Don’t Look Now ep.

Two things: 1) You’re allowed as many crushes as you want. That’s literally the beauty of crushes. 2) This is one 70s movie my mother and I actually didn’t see, I think because after the 🔥 chemistry of Rosalind Russell/Cary Grant, she was like, ‘Meh.’ I eventually did see it years later and was like, ‘Meh.’

Starman good. And I saw Maggie and Peter in my town in Vermont. No need to comb Brooklyn for celebs!

Just about Angelina Jolie, I think actually her humanitarian work is what kind of makes people think she should be a GREAT ACTRESS. Like, she's "serious" and "serious" actors are "great." Also, she started out with the Emmy and the Oscar, and I think that has always given people expectations. (BTW, I didn't know Joe had been possessed by the spirit of Ira Madison at some point to laud Salt.)

Considering Burt Reynolds was in the IMDB game, I’m surprised there was no mention of Switching Channels.

Just cause I know these Oscar facts three actors nominated in the sane category for the same film has happened two other times 1935: Clark Gable, Charles Laughton, Franchot Tone (Mutiny on the Bounty) - the year before supporting was introduced where one of them probably would’ve been nominated 1963: Edith Evan’s, Joyce Redman, Diane Cilento (Tom Jones)

Ed Harris

My favorite thing relating to the movie is Carol Burnett evidently was on a flight where The Front Page was shown. After it ended, she proceeded to stand up and apologize to the entire plane for the film they had just watched. Sinatra vs. Hoffman is exactly the sort of actor feud I love. Is it over something important? No, not really. As a matter of fact it is essentially over nothing at all in the grand scheme of things, even from a Hollywood perspective. Is it petty? Hell yeah, we are talking two guys who take themselves way too seriously and Sinatra was always good for a chuckle in this regard. Is it entertaining as hell? Absolutely.

I haven’t listened to the episode yet, but I only know this as the movie that Eddie Murphy described as having “no titties, no funny, and no kung fu” in Dolemite Is My Name

Kara Hogan

I’ve only just started listening but Roxana is such a delight!!!

Carol Matthau of Mikey and Nicky! Unforgettable scene

Surprised it wasn't mentioned that this was a remake of a Best Picture nominee from 1931. Personally wouldn't recommend the original.

John Ananias

I will always forget that Diane Ladd DIDN'T win for ALICE DOESN'T LIVE HERE ANYMORE.

James Sykora

I’m only at the very beginning of the episode but I have to share the version of the ScarJo/Cruise/Scientology story that I remember reading around that time. ScarJo was originally cast in the Keri Russell role in M:I-3 and ALLEDGEDLY Cruise said he wanted to have dinner with her at the Scientology Celebrity center. ALLEDGEDLY she was already a little skittish but he assured her it was just the two of them, and then ALLEDGEDLY the doors to the dining room opened and all the Scientology bigwigs were seated at a big table and she bolted and dropped out of the movie the next day. ALLEDGEDLY.

As per the musing on who might be our era's Walter Mathau, and then Joe says probably somebody British (Giamatti deemed close but too cuddly) I want to volunteer: Brendon Gleason?

Brandon Skidmore

I love Jeff Bridges and Karen Allen in Starman. They are both my personal winners of that year. What did everyone think of Carol Burnette in this movie? I love her but I felt like this role was ill-suited for her.

George Wishart

Just listened to the episode and loved it. One Matthau note re: his personality: he was a big-time gambler, and not that successful sometimes. So if he’s being an asshole during a movie, my guess is things weren’t going well with the bookies.

Cyrano

Re-listening to this ep because Roxana is the best and Monday eps don’t go up until late in the morning European time, and boy, between the spot-on social commentary the first 35 minutes of the episode and the pre-plot description kicker of how “the world has gone to shit”…I really regret to say that two years later it’s all so much worse. Thankful for the escape provided by this podcast!
