I had an absolute blast watching this movie! I need drag queens to start watching this again and learn a thing or two from Rita Moreno’s performance.

“That guy” that Sylvester Stallone talked about being Gustave Flaubert is beyond hilarious

"Okay, THE PHANTOM leaps right to 𝑚𝑦 mind because that's probably the first movie I saw Treat Williams in and I was a child and stuff stuck in my dumb brain then, but 𝑇𝐻𝐸 𝑃𝐻𝐴𝑁𝑇𝑂𝑀 is not going to be on Treat Williams' Known For..." One minte later, if that... "Hahahahaha, THE PHANTOM, the '96 is THE PHANTOM!"

Love this movie! I first saw it when I was about 10 because it was the ‘70s and parents were very selectively concerned. Also, Joe’s field trip to the former Continental Baths needs to be a future Excursions episode — maybe the first on-location recording, like Geraldo hunting for Al Capone’s vault.

Richard Lester has one of the wildest filmographies as a director. Hard's Day Night/Help, The Knack and How to Get It (a Palme d'Or Winner), A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, The Three/Four Musketeers, Robin and Marian, This and Superman II/III among others.

Carrie Williams

Both Bugsy Malone and Duchess and the Dirtwater Fox are formative memories for me, a kid with parents who were early adopters of cable TV in 1981, when the same movies ran over and over for a month and both of those hit in the unsupervised Gen X summer months.

I'm definitely going to watch this movie after this episode. I think at one point it was hard to find, but it's available on Apple, YouTube, etc. now, so let me digitally plonk down $3.99. The TLA Releasing flashbacks "Love, Honor, Compassion" brought about are intense. The children do not know all the "mostly terrible, but we're so starved for representation, we'll watch them all" independent gay movies we watched. Billy's Hollywood Screen Kiss? Trick? The Broken Hearts Club? Yes. (Actually, those three were some of the better ones, but let us not quibble.)

Ed Harris

Pretty sure I saw this in the early 90's. Sounds like a blast.

Fun fact: Moreno and Weston reunite as a married couple in Alan Alda’s 1981 romcom, The Four Seasons.

Not me screaming ANASTASIA at the discussion of Terrence McNally's musicals bc I still think it's hilarious that he wrote the book for Anastasia

The sticking power of that Faye Oscar photo can't be overemphasized. 1976 was my intro to Oscars. A year prior, I'd seen headlines about JAWS and Oscar and since I wasn't allowed to see JAWS I thought there was a show that showed movies you weren't allowed to see. So I made a date to watch the Oscars the following year. It then became a family tradition which is weird because the big moments that year in our house was my father screaming at Vanessa Redgrave (and later cheering Paddy C) and being scandalized that Finch won since his performance was "blasphemous." Regardless, the next morning Faye's photo was front page under the big headline (and this is in Baltimore so there was a time the Oscars was front page news outside of LA/NY) and I remember thinking, "I want to be that." It's the best post-Oscars photo of all time.

Love this movie and your discussion. More importantly, THANK YOU for this huge project you two are tackling atm. You guys rock!

Annaud also directed THE BEAR and CLAN OF THE CAVE BEAR, which makes him the cinematic godfather of THE EDGE and SASQUATCH SUNSET, respectively.

For any Garys who are trying to grasp the scale of what the baths were like back in the 1970s, here's an episode of NYC public access show Emerald City that interviews two bathhouse owners discussing their establishments. https://youtu.be/HfYNmk2CPtA It's a fascinating watch. A daytime-oriented bathhouse in the middle of the financial district! 10-story bathhouse, where each floor is themed! (I cannot imagine how much that real estate must cost today...)

Do any UK Garys know where to get The Ritz? I don’t like to download things illegally and can’t find it ANYWHERE… On a similar subject - I’ve started collecting DVDs for the same reasons as Joe! It’s impossible to track down even things like Cabaret or Eraserhead here unless you buy them. We love a physical media moment!

Michelle Brosius

F. Murray Abraham was also delightfully funny in Mythic Quest (on Apple TV+) until he was fired for inappropriate behavior. He must have tapped into his time on The Ritz. (I'm finding this series so wonderful and informative! Who knew the 70s had so many hidden gems - and non-gems that I'd still see, looking at you The Front Page).

Also have to say Christina is one of the BEST guests!

Brandon Skidmore

I have to say…I love Rita Moreno but supporting actress is the right call for this role at least in the film. Jack Weston is the lead and everyone else is supporting.

Chauncey Telese

The Duchess and the Dirt Water Fox sounds like a Troy McClure movie
