I found New York New York on DVD at Dollar Tree recently. It was a fairly new run of DVDs (probably not long before Amazon bought MGM), because it had the newer MGM logo on the side. They clearly must've liquidated a bunch of copies because my store alone had no fewer than 10.

I feel like once Kander and Ebb got involved, they should have gone to them and had them do all the songs. The standards have no life to them and the movie only comes alive when Liza is doing K&E's songs. Plus, they probably could have eased the combination of musical and Scorsese movie better.

In and Out was filmed at a historical church in my hometown so I’ve always known of its existence but never watched. Would LOVE to hear an exceptions ep on it.

I created a tag on peloton for those interested! THOBgaries 🫶

On Liza’s pre-Cabaret output, The Sterile Cuckoo is pretty good. But you *must* see Tell Me That You Love Me, Junie Moon. It’s wild, and it’s on Kanopy with some VOD options.

The number of episodes where we’re going through any given star’s filmography and there is no mention of their appearances in Shelley Duvall’s Faerie Tale Theatre…two in a row THIS WEEK! First Treat Williams (The Little Mermaid with Pam Dauber) and now Liza (The Princess and the Pea with TOM CONTI 😂) I’ll no longer tolerate Shelley Duvall erasure! JUSTICE FOR FAERIE TALE THEATRE!!

Okay I haven’t listened to the episode yet so they may cover this but I can’t find this streaming anywhere. Can someone let me know? Otherwise I’ll swing to the library this weekend. Thanks!

Being a New York, New York truther may be the loneliest vocation in the world but I honestly think it’s a masterpiece. Glad you all had nice things to say about it though. While I completely understand how off-putting De Niro’s character is, the way Jimmy instantly curdles any moment that threatens to tip into genuine romance is a fascinating melding of Scorsese’s interest in toxic masculinity with the style of Golden Age musicals. And Liza is unimpeachable.

"We're opposites, Joe; you like a mane, and I like male pattern baldness!" Another classic from Chris Feil. SO happy to hear Katie again! It hasn't been that long, but I'm so used to hearing her every week that not having done so in a month or two feels odd. Will NEVER forgive Conde Nast, the idiots. We love you, Katie!

I am so old! I saw You Light Up My Life in the theatrical run. That song was so popular! Played with someone singing along at every piano recital that year. I also learned The Entertainer by heart because of The Sting!

I listened to the title song from The Rink and who do I hear but Jason Alexander??

on the Liza/Marty/Mikhail/Cocaine of it all — I read the Andy Warhol Diaries a couple years back and I think about this passage FREQUENTLY: “Halston and Bianca were in the kitchen together cooking, and he said he had so much energy he wanted to go dancing. He told me lots of gossip—he said that the night before when the doorbell rang it was Liza Minnelli. Her life's very complicated now. Like she was walking down the street with Jack Haley her husband and they'd run into Martin Scorsese who she's now having an affair with, and Marty confronted her that she was also having an affair with Baryshnikov and Marty said how could she. This is going on with her husband, Jack Haley, standing there! And Halston said that it was all true, and he also said that Jack Haley wasn't gay. You see? I was right, I didn't think so. Halston said Jack likes Liza but that what he really goes for is big curvy blonde women. So when the doorbell rang the night before, it was Liza in a hat pulled down so nobody would recognize her, and she said to Halston, ‘Give me every drug you've got.’ So he gave her a bottle of coke, a few sticks of marijuana, a Valium, four Quaaludes, and they were all wrapped in a tiny box, and then a little figure in a white hat came up on the stoop and kissed Halston, and it was Marty Scorsese, he'd been hiding around the corner, and then he and Liza went off to have their affair on all the drugs.”

Re: sloe gin fizz—I tended bar for a long time at a no-frills, tourist-draw bar on a Michigan lake. We had an old bottle of sloe gin, which is earnestly red and achingly sweet, and the only time it was brought out was on nights when we were bored and made up colorful shots. (There was a cherry Dum-Dum shot, and I feel like there was one July 4th when we tried to make a layered red/white/blue shot.) Anyway, if anyone had ordered a sloe gin fizz, we would probably have given it to them for free. At most, we would have charged $3.25.

It’s 2:03:00 of the runtime and maybe I’ll stop listening now because Chris is gonna be BESIDE himself when he figures out Tony Goldwyn’s 2023 known for 😂

If DeNiro had any charisma this would’ve been a hit. (His turn as a romantic lead opposite Streep in Falling In Love is dire as well.) Glad that the 1st point of business on this episode was stating that Liza acts DeNiro under the table in this film, because she does. Also, Scorsese “directed” the Broadway musical, The Act, up until an uncredited Gower Champion took over and brought it into New York.

I feel so much better about myself now that I heard Katey Rich say her mind sometimes goes blank with the Cinematrix.

Catching up and I really appreciated Joe’s comment on Grease on Grease violence 😀
