Any of my fellow Garies want to share their favorite Oscar win of the 1970’s? It’s already been said but mine has to be Joel Grey in Cabaret

This was my favourite episode of the miniseries, Natalie is the best! I was yelling during the IMDb game listen to her she said Reds 3x 😂

My dad took me to New York for a weekend my senior year of high school to see the Hair revival and Next to Normal with a friend I met studying in the UK, and now full circle I am seeing Caissie Levy in June in the Next to Normal revival in London!

I'm reading an interesting book called Roadshow!: The Fall of Film Musicals in the 1960s, about the various attempts to followup the style of the Big 3 of Mary Poppins, My Fair Lady and The Sound of Music and how they mostly didn't work. The book appears to end with the success of Cabaret, which makes you realize that that movie really heralded the way forward for musicals on film. In the wake of that, you get various degrees of in a sense stripped down movie musicals like Hair, Jesus Christ Superstar and Godspell.

Gavin Creel & Jonathan Groff = proto Ben Platt & Noah Galvin

Me realizing that the flooding of the stage in Only Murders was not just a funny plot point but something Broadway shows actually do....

The cheese might stand alone here but I found Hair the movie fairly underwhelming. The first 1/4 to maybe 1/3 of the movie was delightful and then things got, I don't know, dull? I had a hard time staying engaged. Maybe I'm a square? And yes, for most of the musical numbers, I thought, "Are they just listing words and calling it a song?" Charlotte Rae dancing on a table and the magnificence of Treat Williams eyebrows are something to behold, however. I'd love to see this on the stage, I think it probably works best as a live performance.

I actually saw the Broadway revival of Hair referenced and Joe Reid's fears were partially justified. We were in the very back section and at the end of the show the actors were running around hugging people and they definitely made it all the way back to where we were.

My first exposure to Hair was via season 4 of Head of the Class. IMDb tells me it guest starred both Elaine Stritch and John Cameron Mitchell, but I mainly remember it for Michael DeLorenzo’s biceps. Thank you both for this terrific month of 70s film discussion!

I’m gonna go ahead and say it. Natalie Walker: one of the all-time great THOB guests.

Aw, I saw the Hair revival at the Delacorte in 2008 with Jonathan Groff as Claude! I've seen one other live production, and my general feeling about the show is that the musical works better than the movie, mostly because the movie tries to shoehorn a plotless musical into a plot and isn't totally successful. Treat Williams is a delight, though.

Just finished Norma Rae (first time watch). Had to watch it after hearing so much about it all month. It was great!!!

Natalie Walker: goddess, queen. The May miniseries is hereby ascended.

Cecil Spencer

Okay, but just from a vibes perspective, the tribe would be the last people I'd want to hang out with! (but I've also never seen the stage show, so I don't have any prior connection to those characters)

Loved all the mentions of the Actor's Fund benefit concert production of Hair. It was a formative cast album for me. Natalie Walker is the best!
