For the May miniseries, we're taking the opportunity to try something new! So here, for our 1978 episode, we are trying our first COMMENTARY TRACK! And what better film than disasterpiece EYES OF LAURA MARS - consider you May excursion a deep dive into the world of controversial fashion photography, New York City pier real estate, and serial killers. Throughout the film, we discuss such topics as Faye Dunaway's notorious reputation, Barbra Streisand's theme song "Prisoner", and Columbus Circle. (NOTE: we open with a little discussion, so YES, we will tell you when to start the film! Consider this one an experiment!)

The term red herring (as a distraction) is from a British journalist in 1807

Robert Anton

I feel like someone comments this for every episode but I want to make sure I get my turn. This 70’s miniseries has been amazing!

Aaron Pinkston

You know how people make fun of the naming conventions of the Mission: Impossible movies?

Sarah Lang

I’m sure it’s another L.A. Gary who has this checked out from Vidiots. Enjoy and bring it back soon! 😘

Benji Black

Do the Ring cameras basically approximate the experience of the Laura Mars visions?

Brad Ellmoos

I absolutely loved this episode. So much fun watching a movie with you both and I hope we get more excursions like this.

Rene Auberjonois's feathered hair looking like Luke Spencer's is very appropriate as Miss Anthony Geary was "gay-coded," too. (And before anyone says, "But he dated Elizabeth Taylor!" Precisely.) Auberjonois ALSO in fluorescent beige on Deep Space Nine, btw.

Traci

This was so much fun!

Kirsten Johnson

I loved this episode and experiment. This series has caused me to watch great/bonkers films I wouldn't have otherwise. Also thank you for not spoiling the ending!

Chas

I was waiting for the Gold Dust drop and I only had to wait 4 minutes. What a truly gorgeous song on my favorite Tori album. 💛

Taylor Cole

If Joe and Tara Reid had a TV show together, it would be ab HGTV interior decorating show called “Reiding the Room.”

A zz plant or spider plant can thrive in indirect sun and are easy to raise. I don't think either are pet safe but if that's not an issue they're great!

Braden Poapst

Not to go on too much about this but since it was brought up: Some queens I’d love to see on a season of All Stars who haven’t been brought back yet are Dida Ritz, Jaidynn Diore Fierce, Courtney Act, Kim Chi, Peppermint, and Asia O’Hara, if they’d want to do it of course. (Ivy Winters, sadly no longer doing drag!)

What an absolute treat. Did anyone know why Rene Auberjonois was dressed as Laura when he died? Reading the IMDb bio on Amazon Prime, it turns out his mother was called Princess (but not actually a princess?!). The IMDb bio for Faye also sent me - ‘An icy, elegant blonde with a knack for playing complex and strong-willed female leads, enormously popular actress Faye Dunaway… etc’ I’m assuming someone on her team wrote this (or Faye herself).

There's an odd connection between the Star Wars sequels and neo-noir: Irving Kirchner makes this, Leigh Brackett had just written The Long Goodbye, Lawrence Kasdan follows Empire with Body Heat and Richard Marquand follows Return with Jagged Edge.

I’ve enjoyed this series so much! Donald was Laura’s agent. He dressed up as her because she wanted to not have the police follow her when she went to see her ex husband. To me, his death was the saddest because we see much more of him having a full and connected life—his friendship with Laura and dressing as her to help her, his friends at his birthday party. In the original Thomas Crown Affair, Faye also wears a lot of crazy hats and chin straps. And Tommy Lee Jones in this is more of an 8.5! 😀

Frank McCormick

Faye won an Emmy for a guest spot on a Columbo TV Movie special in the 1990s. Do with that what you will, because I don't know how to process it.

Elizabeth Musser

This was super fun! I'm sure these are exhausting, but would love more commentary episodes, especially for movies with as much rich material as ELM.

Jason Feffer

Thank you Joe for addressing the Ingmar/Ingrid Bergman of it all. This is something I think about far too often. Just last week I double checked to see if they had any relations!

Brandon Skidmore

Joe was asking about the term “red herring” and after consulting with our mutual friend Rose Nylund, she stated that a red herring is “a herring that is red.”

Brandon Skidmore

And I was also left confused about Laura Mars’s psychic abilities but I just assumed that something happened to her mother while she was studying spiders in the Amazon.

Brit

Loved this!! So much fun!

Just found the Mad Magazine parody of this movie in an old book of mine. It’s called “The Eyes of Lurid Mess” (real creative).

Cordelia Of The Seas

I went with my girlfriend to see a double bill of All That Jazz followed by the Eyes of Laura Mars. Watching this movie second, following the sensory and emotional rush of All That Jazz, had a dizzying effect of being completely untethered from reality. 10/10 date night, great way to start pride month.

TheRealestXtina

LOLOL Joe was really on one (complimentary) this episode. Loved it, such a fun episode.

Jan Jensen

I loved this episode so much. Plesse donthis again I love everything Joe and Chris.

FrankDNA

A belated thank you for this episode! I love this movie so much; first saw it as a kid and I’ve been paranoid about having sharp objects near my eyes ever since. And I literally have framed lobby cards of Lulu and Michelle on my office walls. Note to Chris: I’m like a prisoner / Captured by “your eyes” (See what they did there!?)

Movie commentary starts 16:50 mins in

I watched this with a can of Baja Blast and had a great time.
