Joe why does an ampersand count as a word in cinematrix

Kevin Breslin

Thank you Chris and Joe for introducing me to this movie. This movie is one of the greatest historical movies I’ve ever seen but should not be a surprise coming from Mike Leigh

Scott Aefsky

Can you drop the Survivor season recommendations Joe? I got my fiancee into it watching the two most recent seasons, and am struggling to figure out which classic seasons to bring to her.

Cannot wait to see how Hard Truth is priced on the Vulture Game this year.

Simon Russell Beale is a very good Falstaff in the Henry IV episodes of The Hollow Crown (a BBC series that adapts the Shakespeare Richard & Henry plays in chronological order with an actor playing a role as a supporting character in a preceding play before playing the same role in the play they are the lead in).

Rupaul: It’s extra special guest judge Mike Leigh! Mike are you ready to read my girls some Hard Truths? Mike Leigh: It’s too loud Ru: *laughs* Tonight on the runaway category is: Secrets and Thighs! Racers, start your engines and may the best drag queen WIN! Leigh: ☹️

Great episode. It’s still maddening to me that Peterloo didn’t get its rightful flowers in awards season; the costumes and production design in particular. And Manchester goddess Maxine Peake is really wonderful. Speaking of the Leigh (or Leon?) community of actors, I can happily report it spills over into real life too… I saw Leigh’s play “Grief” starring Lesley Manville at the National a few years back, and Imelda was in the audience that day being utterly lovely with everyone around her. Leigh Queens supporting Leigh Queens.

The Mike Leigh movie I’ve seen most is Topsy Turvy. I was going through Just Watch to see what else is available (I was the 15 year old who rented Secrets and Lies.) I may just have to go rent Happy Go Lucky.

Rewatched Abigail's Party for the third (?) fourth (?) time a couple of weeks ago, it's my second favourite Leigh after Secrets and Lies, and feels pretty integral to his career. A tacky, 70s riff on Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf - Alison Steadman is a MONSTER of the highest order, am obsessed with how Ange's tight necklace flips up and down constantly, how the drinks are ALL room temperature, and the Demis Roussos needle drops. It was a family classic in my house and hasn't aged a bit. The tonal shift at the end is pretty jaw-dropping too. IMO it's also very well-directed.

The plot description that NYFF released for Hard Truths makes it sound like Jean-Baptiste is going full scorched-earth so I’m excited to see what that looks like. Also, Bryony Miller (who plays the maid in that very funny portrait scene in Peterloo) is in it.

David Kirk

Great episode. I never got the lukewarm response to Peterloo. Powerful piece of work. We do learn an about it at school in England. Or at least I did in the 90s. If you want to learn about the birth of the working class movement in this period I would recommend E.P Thompson’s The Making of the English Working Class. I am pretty sure it would have been a major source for Leigh.

Late to the party this week, but let me add a YES! to Penny Dreadful. Pure Gothic Prestige Trash where absolutely no one needs to go as hard as they do, but they do anyway. That that two-hander between Rory Kinear and Eva Green in the mental asylum didn't get any attention is a travesty. Eva Green in general deserved more than, like, one GG nom. Timothy Dalton, Billie Piper, and one of my beloved Treadaway twins (which one? Who knows!), PATTI FUCKING LUPONE as a witch: it has it all, plus some genuinely moving musings on faith and feminism and regret.
