Well I’ll start. I consider myself a bit of a movie-a-holic and I have never heard of this film! So I guess that says something?

I love this movie and this conversation. I was nodding along so hard, especially about how proto-“White Lotus” season one it is. I also think that there is an argument to be made that “School of Rock” does explore similar themes. It’s a bit overwhelmed by the Jack Black x cute kids of it all, but the inciting incident stems from the lead character’s reluctance to grow up/get a real job/settle, etc. He’s aware that he’s written off as a loser for clinging to his rock star fantasy and keeps scheming to keep it going throughout. On the flip side, there is a lot of really well observed and heartbreaking stuff with these young prep school kids and the pressure that they are already feeling from their parents to meet certain expectations. I do think it has a more objectively happy ending than the bulk of his films and tv series, but it fits nicely within the overall arc.

Entirely separate from my previous comment, the first thing I noticed Austin Abrams in was (unfortunately) “This Is Us” — a very silly network melodrama that managed to hook me to the extent that I watched every single episode. His character in that was a genuine scumbag.

Dash and Lily forever.

Phantom Thread was nominated for screenplay not The Big Sick. And deservedly so even though I love The Big Sick

I honestly think Ben Stiller does more serious roles because that's the kind of stuff he enjoys more. If you've ever listened to him on commentary tracks, his vibe seems very "serious professional". I don't feel like he's chasing awards so much as he's reached a career point where he can do whatever he wants now and he just wants to do stuff like Brad's Status. Oh yeah, and because it came up in the episode, my view of Professor Marston and the Wonder Women: It's the heartwarming story of two women who fall in love despite the constant, unrelenting presence of the world's most annoying rope bottom. (Liked the movie, but it's hard to come away from it feeling like I wouldn't be able to be in the same room as William Moulton Marston for more than five minutes without wanting to strangle him.)

A movie about a middle-aged white guy up his own ass who can't get out of his own head comparing his life to those around him and finding it wanting? Yet another personal attack aimed straight at me! Maybe it's my age and the time I came up with, but the title "Brad's Status" screams AIDS DRAMEDY to me, and I wonder if some people had that same thought and it led them not to see it.

Loved this movie. I believe the first of these happened with Beatriz at Dinner, but I feel like all coverage of Mike White's filmography requires: 1) A brief history of his time on Survivor (bonus points for commenting on how that shapes his career moving forward) and 2) Jennifer Coolidge giving a Golden Globes speech dedication so lovely that it always comes to mind when I hear his name.

absolutely one of the most insane box office games i’ve ever heard. i love these guys so much

I’m watching this on Amazon Prime, did it look crazy oversaturated to anyone else? Like everyone looks SUPER tan.

This is a movie that has existed as a title for me. And because of the word "status" in that title, I had assumed it was about HIV.

On the topic of David Gordon Green, I'd love to hear you guys tackle Our Brand Is Crisis. Sandy post-Gravity plus a stacked supporting cast, Clooney and Grant Heslov producing...and that movie fully doesn't exist.

A great discussion and another instance where both of them were stymied by mainstream comedies.

Not to be a dopey fanboy, but I'd listen to a conversation about your college jobs. Working full time in college is a whole other world. I remember them telling me I really needed to get an internship (back before they were low paid and just plain unpaid as a rule) and was confused for a while because I couldn't figure out how to do school, work, and an internship. The answer of course was, "Well, that's why you won't be working in your field any time soon" but they left that out of the wording.
