The way I said "Hell yeah!" when I saw this. What a thoughtful christmas gift! Merry christmas to all and to all I want for Christmas is you!

JPB Gerald

What was the thing they asked us to respond to in the comments? someone help.

Liesl

Others who dislike "Wonderful Christmastime"! My people!

Michelle Brosius

I highly doubt that Mixed Nuts had any buzz, but please find a way to cover this movie! It is a gem! The most ridiculous Christmas movie of all time. Every time we get a Christmas tree I have Jon Stewart and Parker Posey goals to get one that is perfectly symmetrical. :) Also, I found out Santa wasn't real when I was around 8 - I compared handwriting on the letter from Santa to my mom's writing and discovered there is no way both Santa and my mom can dot their "i"s with hearts.

Jenny Maurer

It’s a good cast doing their best with a weird ass proto studio 60 script

Allison Thompson

I LIVED for Roswell, thank you for the shoutout. Also, you can buy a version of the quarterzip on Etsy, I google it every year when I get prosecco tipsy watching this movie and threaten to buy it for my husband. Although I also come to the same conclusion every year that if I’m going to buy cosplay wear from a holiday movie, I’m going to go all in with Beverly DiAngelo’s Christmas Eve ensemble from Christmas Vacation.

J Kyle Wilsor

The assertion that Jamie and Aurelia is the worst storyline is a felounie, I tell you!! A FELOUNIE!!

Carly

Sadly I did not discover Santa wasn’t real before my mum had a card posted to me from Santa which had a chore chart where if I did extras I’d get a special gift - she admitted years later that she forgot all about there being a promise of a special gift but that luckily for her I just decided the animals of farthing wood book was my chore reward 😂

Chris, Lawless Hearts is secretly one of the best films of 2003. Bill Nighy is one of the standouts in another ensemble movie with a modified Rashomon structure. Kenneth Turan was a huge advocate for it at the time. Highly recommend that movie. It makes total sense that LAFCA would include it. My supporting actor award would have gone to Saarsgaard that year, but I dig that call. Also, Chris Cooper in Seabuscuit was also in contention for a while for a movie I don't think works that well.

Jenny Maurer

As for Santa, I think I just grew out of it by middle school or so? But I still like wearing a Santa hat, waving to mall Santa’s and sometimes putting from Santa on gift tags just for fun

Liesl

Boo, Mia! A couple of the best movie experiences that I've had at my local Alamo Drafthouse were when I attended the Love Actually movie party on two separate years, and it was such a incredible thrill to boo Mia alongside others when she first appears onscreen.

🎶 I COME FROM C-I-N-C-I-N-N-A-T-T-I CINCINNATTI 🎶 Drew & Keanu ftw

My mother has very distinct handwriting -- and so did Santa. It clicked one year and I was like J'ACCUSE, JERKS

Speaking to the Best Supporting Actor race for 2003...any "needed another" business does not compute when you have Finney-BIG FISH and Serkis-THE RETURN OF THE KING, but Finney is an even clearer/more-annoying-for-me, "How did THAT not happen!" It bums me the hell out that you can do BIG FISH as an Exception.

Allison Amphlett

Someone connected with the movie once said that Rowan Atkinson's character started as an angel. I always thought that the Alan Rickman workplace was an NGO especially after watching the deleted scene of the people in poster on the wall.

Stephanie Radcliffe

For the taxonomy of Christmas movies: sick at home last week, I watched Gerwig's "Little Women" and "While You Were Sleeping" and they are perfect melancholic, pre-Christmas movies.

John Ananias

Joe going down the Hawn path instead of the Bergman path - as Chris is trying to get him to deliver it properly - was so funny.

Martha Burzynski

Two incredibly small notes; Elizabeth Reaser’s last name is pronounced Rease-er and the small press than does those Things [celebrity] Loves/Hates is Dreambaby Press.

Carrie Williams

If you’re looking for a new Christmas movie, consider Catch Me if You Can! A lot of it takes place at Christmas and then there are also sunny parts so you can feel warm in your brain for a while.

Jenny Maurer

Also: has no one told Liam Neeson’s kid or the American kid about aol instant messenger ? It was still around back then! They coulda kept in touch that way Sheeesh

Had I been on this episode, I would have required an extra hour talking through Martine McCutcheon’s career highs and lows, full discography, and Jonathan Pryce’s thunderous face when she won the Olivier Award.

Question: for those that open presents on Christmas Eve, how do you explain the Santa logistics

Molly Fromkin

Am Jewish so always knew about Santa, stayed cool about it for the goyim. BUT my only other Jewish friends’ parents would give them Hanukkah gifts “from Santa” so they wouldn’t feel left out, and so one year I pretended to believe in him to see if my parents would get me more presents. They did not.

Reed mikkelsen

Slept on Christmas gems: Klaus is my kids favorite, and this year we discovered Netflix' Biltmore Christmas which is charming, romantic, and funny (but not stupid like Hot Frosty)

Ryan Gaffney

I don’t remember when it fully clicked in to place but the first chip in the armor was finding a K-Mart price tag my parents had missed on a gift. I tried to rationalize it as “well obviously the elves don’t make some of the toys” but the image of Santa in the checkout line definitely raised more questions. Re: younger siblings, I do recall my mom pulling my brother and I aside at one point to tell us “I know you know, and if you tell your sisters then ‘Santa’ will not bring anybody presents” so we all played along with the Santa mythos until well after my youngest sister must have figured it out

Chauncey Telese

I knew this episode was going to be fire 🔥 when they both pistol whipped Wonderful Christmas Time which is an atrocity. It's too bad Norton's American show on comedy central never caught on. Also I'm one of a small number of people who have seen The Cooler lol.

Sean McP

So I would skip my evening Italian class and went to see Love Actually in the theater three times just to cry (which I did every time) with Emma Thompson. I also bought the Joanie Mitchell CD. I was so invested in Emma getting the Oscar Nom.

AJW

I learned about Santa when my third grade teacher asked people who still believed in Santa to raise their hands in class. She was an evil bitch.

Brett Jackson

amc+ has graham norton episodes! current season and a few past seasons

It’s so funny that Chris and Joe Gift of the Magi’d each other with the Christmas movie game! So many things I want to say in response to things from this episode. 1. Drag Race UK had such a great cast this year, especially the beautiful friendship between Kyran and La Voix (the GOAT). 2. I love Music and Lyrics, it’s one of those movies that’s a little better than it needed to be. 3. The unrequited love storyline is absolutely the worst because it’s not even a story! What is the point of any of that? I don’t care about any of them because they’re barely characters. Because I am a huge sap I kind of think the Colin Firth thing is cute, but my heart belongs to Hugh and Martine.

Erin Hardy

I've always wondered what was wrong with the person who chose "Wherever You Will Go" to soundtrack a literal orgy.

Keegon

I would pay good money to see Jenna Maroney in a segment of Love, Actually.

John Ananias

Given how much I agree with Joe's comments on how contrarians' need to hate on generally-beloved movies contributes to our generally-broken culture (and my NOT liking something is not interesting), I...will not blather on about how LOVE ACTUALLY's just not for me, Christmas-wise or romcom-wise. What I will say is that...boy, is Emma Thompson good. Rickman, too, but...boy, is Emma Thompson good. She and Nighy are the high points in this for me, and I suppose I'm not alone in that.

Meg

Would be interested to hear your thoughts on to what extent Richard Curtis has a women problem if you cover him again in the future. IMO his films are rife with misogyny!

Zoe Smith

Loved Joe chatting about how long the santa ruse goes on when you have younger siblings. I have an 8 year gap between my second youngest sister and I, so I was getting "Santa" gifts til I was like 18. But then my parents had a surprise baby when I was 21, so now I have a 5yr old sister who very much believes in Santa and I'm back to getting presents from him 😂

Samuel Mc

I think we don't need to turn off the 'problematic' filter in our brain while watching it. Half the appeal of romcoms for me is how unhinged the romantic premises are. Also I love the Alan Rickman/Emma Thompson one. We need more evil gutpunch vignettes in romcoms.

Paige Gray

I love Joe's advocacy of the "90 Years of Oscar" montage. I show this at the end of the first class each quarter in any of film or literature courses to remind students of the power of storytelling. I've seen in a BILLION times, and it ALWAYS gets me. (And it's such a perfect employment of the Love Actually score!)

Seth

I found out about Santa at age 8 when I read a “how to tell your kid about Santa not being real” article in the newspaper

Bobby Scanlon Jr.

Realizing the first 55 episodes of this pod which includes ‘The Family Stone’ episode is not of Spotify makes this a blue Christmas.

Lauren Schultz

Thank you for telling us about the Kate Winslet and Emma Thompson eulogizing Alan Rickman ❤️

Priyanka

just rewatched the 90th Oscars movie montage and cried - happy new year! the magic of the movies! but dang if the love actually score doesn't really bring it home

Laura

Two comments listening to this episode currently 1. It would be great when you’re doing quintessential Brit episodes to get a Brit on the podcast - I think that view would really add to the context (particularly the US / Uk divide you spoke about). 2. It’s so interesting when Americans talk about ‘it’s a wonderful life’ being so important to the Christmas experience as I don’t believe it’s a very known film in any other English speaking countries. I’ve never seen it and not aware of anyone else who has!
