What does it all mean?! The SAG and DGA nominations have arrived and we're looking at the tea leaves with a magnifying glass...

Beyond the RaMell Ross and Payal Kapadia there, Megan Park fully has another feature film before My Old Ass… Bizarre choices, even funnier for two of the nominees to be Oscar nominees too.

Now, SAG...oh, Screen Actors Guild...I like WICKED: PART ONE very much - and I like throwing a wrench in the awards-season works even more - but...a nomination for Jonathan Bailey is just unnecessary.

Being that DUNE: PART TWO is currently still my favorite film of 2024 and that I think Zendaya is better in that than her other buzzy 2024 film, I am nodding vigorously at the talk that DUNE: PART TWO deserved to be in the cast category at SAG. We gotta acknowledge an embarrassment of riches even when it's in a sci-fi movie/an "effects movie."

Chris mentioned Girl on the Train Episode today. I can’t find it. Was it just discussed in another episode?

I agree that Daria Ekamasova being left out of the SAG Ensemble nomination for Anora is a crime. I was literally googling her on my phone as I was walking out of the theater the first time I saw Anora. Very curious what the eligibility situation was there. As an Anora Bro, despite these nominations, I'm still feeling a bit worried about its chances for any wins come Oscar night. Demi really seems to be locking up Best Actress, Keiran Culkin seems to be doing the same for Supporting Actor, and it just seems like there isn't as much momentum for Best Director or Best Picture. I guess I can look forward to crying during that final scene in the car when I re-watch Anora in 2026 when y'all do an Exceptions episode on it...

We really need to unpick this part of the Academy rules for Sebastian Stan: “In the event that two achievements by an actor or actress receive sufficient votes to be nominated in the same category, only one shall be nominated using the preferential tabulation process and such other allied procedures as may be necessary to achieve that result.” The “such other allied procedures as may be necessary” is fascinating to me. Does this mean that they might combine the two? Obviously this happened to Kate Winslet for “The Reader”…

If June Squibb gets an Oscar nom, does she then become more of a favorite or at least a dark horse in a pool of 5 given the Academy can be quite fond of actors in their later decades? Does it change things for her if Thelma also gets a best picture nomination?

I'm happy Jonathan Bailey got a nom! And I say this as someone who really disliked Wicked! Throughout all of "Dancing Through Life" I kept thinking "oh wow, it's so wild he doesn't have a huge supporting actor push, he's so good." (then, when he barely shows up for the rest of the movie, I understood). He likely won't be on my personal ballot, and I don't see it carrying over to the Oscars, but good for him.

Still have to finish the episode but wasn’t it Chris who predicted Jamie Lee would be nominated at the Globes? I think think both your predictions came true for SAG instead (& Joe for Jonathan Bailey)

Chances of Mikey Madison becoming this years Charles Melton?

DGA member here who always submits their top 5 even though I haven’t seen anything…not surprised at the nominees. Very good point about the voting bloc being very large and giving more of a populist vibe. I don’t work in film yet I’m a member, so I’m a prime example of what you mention. My ballot is usually my top 4 and then 5th place goes to a movie I really liked a lot and know it’s not going to get any awards recognition at all. I haven’t seen THE BRUTALIST yet, but will make sure I do before I vote for the final award. My top 5 was… 1) I SAW THE TV GLOW 2) THE SUBSTANCE 3) NICKEL BOYS 4) SEPTEMBER 5 5) WOMAN OF THE HOUR

It would be interesting if "Hard Truths" became this year's "Georgia" (1995), where MJB can't crack a loaded Best Actress field but Michele Austin does end up Oscar-nominated in a wide-open Best Supporting Actress race. (I suppose "The Last Showgirl" could also be that movie...)

The Vatican’s Deux Moi 😆😆

As happy as I am for Jonathan Bailey, I really wish SAG had this energy for him (& Matt Bomer) in fellow travelers. That show could’ve used the spotlight, and the entire cast was fantastic.

Robin Hitchcock

Thank you for addressing who didn't make the cut for the SAG ensemble lists, my favorite awards curiosity. Eternal justice for Lil Rel Howery and Betty Gabriel!

Elliott Sainsbury

The Dune 2 ensemble is really slept-on, if only for Charlotte Rampling screaming 'Abomination!' at Timothee Chalamet. Also Netflix dumping His Three Daughters is still shocking to me. Any of the three could easily take a place in lead or supporting.

Harriet Ware

Sideways is the last time an ensemble won with only four names

Kara Hogan

Heck, if we’re nominating Isabella Rossellini for a glorified cameo, we certainly can do it for Scoot!
