Re: Nightbitch; Searchlight undeniably fucked it over in a way that is annoying, but I found out it was the sixth most attended movie at the indie theater in Iowa City in all of 2024, ahead of movies like Beetlejuice 2, Furiosa, Conclave and Thelma. Which makes the lack of box office reporting way more puzzling.

(a) It may very well be that Academy voters, in general, just don't want THE APPRENTICE...buuuuut I cannot shake the feeling that it gets into Best Actor and Best Makeup/Hair and probably Best Supporting Actor (I haven't seen the movie, but I really don't want to deal with the movie, and I often have to predict against my own interests/preferences). (2) I can still see THE SUBSTANCE ending up with 0 Oscar nominations, or just 1, buuuuut I am now more optimistic than I've been to date about Demi's chances; I doubt her narrative at my own peril.

I wanted to say something about Zoe Saldana being all emotional about her Golden Globe victory. I think the Nina Simone episode had a powerful effect on her, I think she really felt that rejection from the audience that she should not be playing Nina Simone. She tried to put herself in a more serious category and it didn't really go great.

I think Saldana is locked up too, though Rossellini’s best lane to a win would be if enough people start pushing back on the idea that we’re going to have two fairly indisputable co-leads winning the supporting awards this year. GET DIANE LADD OUT ON SOME RED CARPETS, CONCLAVE TEAM! 😀

despite my issues with the substance overall, it really is SO rad that demi’s been able to craft an awards trajectory with a weird, audacious, genuinely successful and talked about movie…as opposed to a strange astroturfed campaign with some shameless oscar bait like, say, jennifer anniston with cake

I played Pump it Up on repeat after Demi won! As a body horror stan from Society to From Beyond I can’t believe the genre is getting awards love. Hoped at the very most a make-up nom for The Substance so blown away that it’s getting as much attention as it is.
