Surely there must be some Garys who were devotees of Movieline magazine!! For this month's excursion, we do a deep dive into the issue that featured a notorious interview with Jennifer Lopez where she gave no-holds-barred commentary on no fewer than a dozen of her fellow actresses and coworkers. Topics also include blind items, costar chemistry, Madeline Stowe screaming obscenities, and more!!

i wish I could nail down whether i had this issue - because I really might have, I did get a Movieline from time to time, but y'know, it was never a regular in my life the way EW was starting in '97. It was an occasional, it was the B-tier, I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking that.

1:38 into this, THANK YOU to one Chris Feil for vocalizing some issues with that THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY bit - probably the most famous THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY bit, but, much as *I* don't want to "Cinema Sins" or "Honest Trailer" anything, that's not what I'm about, I just...that joke has no structural integrity to me, the leaps I have to make for that visual are TOO much and do not work. I've never heard anyone who's not me prod at that at all, so I appreciated this.

When the Pawn slaps

Gay gasp at Chris telling Joe that Carroll Baker was in Giant and not that she was Best Actress-nominated for Baby Doll, the filthiest movie of the 50s and Eli Wallach’s breakthrough.

Re: that Madeleine Stowe interview—Blink fuckin ruuuules.

I was a hardcore Movieline reader for a few years there around 1994 (a girl in high school once told me I had "good magazine style" and I felt pressure to live up to that). Premiere was for squares.

Chas

This was such a cozy episode that I really needed after the last few days. 🖤

Harriet Ware

I was shocked this whole episode as someone who was a small child in 1998! Not least because I’ve always thought JLo was a singer turned actress 😂

Amy Patrick

I am notoriously old. This came out when I was a senior in college and I was shocked by her candor and ego (complimentary). Loved hearing this.

Chrissy

As a Catholic school survivor myself, I’m dying at the thought of one allowing a student to write about Boogie Nights in the school paper

I love that you guys are also big fans of Tori Amos! I was really into her from the mid 90s to the early 00s, and her music from this period of time still holds up. I tricked my very religious aunt into buying me the Boys for Pele CD shortly after it was released. Also, I was so into The Full Monty during that awards season run that my friends and I incorporated all of its British slang into our daily conversations. We were probably extremely annoying!

Fleetwood Mac’s the dance is one of the best Live album s ever?

Liesl

Joe, I hope you eventually show up on The Floor! My family and I are obsessed with that show and always play along. It's so fun!

Brandon Skidmore

I also got a subscription to EW for Christmas. Man I miss those days

Ashley L

Movieline seems so trashy [/complimentary] it is so fun to revisit this era

The first blind item also screamed Nicolas Cage to me and I thought the title being “stand off” was a play on Face/Off which came out about six months before this issue and might have been his most recent movie at the time? And I wouldn’t dismiss it being about Snake Eyes, since his co-star was Gary Sinise, who was pretty fresh off Forest Gump and Apollo 13. I’m going to stop obsessing on this eventually. Also I think you both really enjoy Dangerous Beauty.

From the Simpsons episode where Homer orders a book on tape for weight loss and receives a vocabulary builder - “The gourmand metamorphosizes into the voluptuary.”

Carrie Williams

Not me SCREAMING Marry Me!!!! Like a psycho on my old lady walk.

Molly Fromkin

Cannot believe that Kari Wührer came up and Joe of all people did not mention 1) her ignominious firing from General Hospital because they were mad she got pregnant and 2) the namedrop of all namedrops in the Rural Juror song

shorterpulse

You mention Mulder/Scully fans being an early intense shipping fandom but the fun fact is that the word 'shipper' itself originated to describe x-files fans who wanted the two to get together!

Frank McCormick

I, too, was a Movieline website devotee. Louis Virtel lured me there when he got the job because I was already a fan of his YouTube show. I still sometimes whisper "Fandango my nango?" into the night wind. Also, I think you forgot Seth Abramovitch in the list of Gays From Movieline.

Keri

I still have my Bad Movies We Love book with forward by Sharon Stone (she had a couple of movies featured).

Tom

OMFG, I am deeeeep into my Tori project

Laura

Blind item 1: Nic Cafe on face off. Blonde successful couple known for heroin? Jonny Lee Miller and Angelina Jolie were together and blonde around that time I think?

Brent Holcomb

Joe, I LOVE when you talk about Tori Amos! She is my favorite artist ever!! Choirgirl for life!
