We hope you are all taking care of yourselves and that this week's episode can provide a bit of lighthearted distraction! Oscar nominations this Thursday...

Braden Poapst

I know this was likely recorded prior to the nomination date changing, but the talk about Lee-ver not taking did give me flashbacks to the discussion about the fun and camp of the To Leslie campaign in the ep that came out the week of those nominations…. Which could mean nothing.

Everyone NEEDS to see Brief Encounter

David Kirk

I absolutely love early David Lean. Brief Encounter is heartbreakingly brilliant. I would also recommend Blithe Spirit, Great Expectations and Hobsons Choice.

Michelle Brosius

I saw this movie - it is indeed a bit bonkers.

Taylor Cole

I have not seen this movie, but my one association with it is the time Dan Kois from Slate told me it was his dream to write a novelization of “The Dressmaker,” while also noting he knew full well that the film was itself adapted from novel.

Clint

“let me distract BOTH teams with my glamour…” lolol

Rob Watson

Count me as someone who also kinda liked Fabulous Four

Rob

*taps mic; sings to the tune of Kylie Minogue’s ‘Fever’* “Lee-ver sure has got me good, What you do when Lee-ver takes hold…”

Jenny Maurer

Honestly I think the Ab Fab movie woulda have worked If Pedro almodovar would direct it

Clint

re: movies premiering at festivals and not getting released until the following year, never forget the burning plain (festivals in 2008, limited release in september 2009)

Samantha Bonaparte

I ride hard for Doctor Zhivago! The Dressmaker is a wild movie (complimentary) and the fact that it is based on a book has me intrigued! I agree with the fact that Liam does NOT have iPhone face - the body, yes isn't accurate to time period but he can be in a period film way more easily than Chris, IMO. Finally, you cannot forget Maurice in the EM Forster adaptation universe!! A gem!

MJ

My favorite Hugo Weaving performance is opposite Russell Crowe in Jocelyn Moorhouse’s Proof. Really fascinating movie.

John Ananias

Catch me nodding vigorously at the praise for THE REF and Judy Davi therein - i didn't get to it this last Christmas, but i do most years - and then MORE so at the HAIL, CAESAR! talk; great on the Coens for not wanting to play the game, they're fine, but if we're doing this right, that delight of a movie should've been all over the nominations.

John Ananias

One of my other regular podcasts is "That Week in SNL," which covers a different SNL episode from a different era every other week. Their latest ep. covers the Jan. '97 David Alan Grier show, which includes the fantastic "Maya Angelou for ___" runner ("Maya Angelou for Froot Loops" being the sublime best of the batch). So, I ran into a funny little Maya Angelou theme over the last couple days in podcasts.

David Upton

Counter to Pablo Larrain not being a master: No. His best movie and absolutely wonderful.

Keegon

Can confirm that Why Him is a real movie. Back when I saw it in the cinema, they handed out branded beer coozies

Sophie Pels

justice for Doctor Zhivago ):

Australian here: unsure how we feel about Kate’s accent. Maybe one reason it didn’t take off here is that it felt hard to claim as ‘ours’ with her at the helm?? Also Australian rules football will appeal to anyone who likes watching hot fit men run around a lot in very tight shorts

Brad Ellmoos

As an Aussie, While I love getting an outsider perspective on an Australian film it would have been fun to have an Aussie on as a guest. I would gladly put my hand up. Especially to give background to some of the supporting cast who are beloved actors in Australia.

Molly Fromkin

Wait is Unconditional Love the one where she’s in love with Barry Manilow? That movie is BANANAS

Stephanie Radcliffe

Maggie's Plan! A perfectly lovely little movie where Julianne Moore does her second-most bonkers accent work ever (30 Rock for-evah). And a sneakily great 1% Cinematrix title!

Molly Fromkin

the words “unwell Kate Winslet movie” compel me to once again implore the boys to cover the 2005 John Turturro film Romance & Cigarettes, IDK if it had actual Oscar buzz but just like… based on vibes

Jason Feffer

No nominations response or points update a full day later? You guys ok?

HelenB

I have never heard of this movie so was looking forward to the plot description....😳 sounds insane, adding to watch list!

Alfonso Magaña

Just want to add, in addition to The Invitation, Tammy Blanchard was nomination worthy in Siân Heder’s Tallulah.

Gosia

Had never even heard of this movie but loved watching it (it was bonkers as previously mentioned but in the best way). Thank you finding these gems to watch!
