Okay, just got back from a trip and need to listen to the actual episode, but this is the EXACT kind of movie I love hearing about on the podcast because it’s SO CLOSE to being something special and doesn’t quite make it. It’s aiming for Billy Wilder but it doesn’t have enough bite for the satire to sting or the emotions to land. The ending feels like a cop-out, and ScarJo’s character is so underdeveloped that it feels more bad that she’s coming between Quaid and Grace’s characters than Grace’s engaging in an inappropriate relationship. I remember seeing this again on cable and also thinking there were too many “passage of time” montages, something Wilder and his ilk were more graceful in depicting through quick cuts or visuals. Overall, it just felt “aggressively mid,” and that frustrated me because when it came out I was in a position like both Quaid and Grace’s characters — my mid-20s, in journalism in my case, and seeing the market get squeezed, opportunities drying up, experienced people being pushed out the door, and younger people around my age being unwisely promoted to executive positions without the experience or mentorship to combine their new ideas with the ability to do the existing job. Honestly, this is one of those movies where I just want to break down the script scene by scene and figure out how to rewrite and restructure it to make it work better. Still, will always remember Clark Gregg’s “Teddy K is a beautiful man!”

David Byrne is an Emmy shy of an EGOT. The TV version of American Utopia was nominated but didn’t win; maybe they can air Here Lies Love on HBO for another bite at the Apple.

To this day when we're at an event or party and everyone stands to applaud, I'll lean over to my wife and yell "Teddy K!" a la Clark Gregg. She definitely loves it and hasn't gotten annoyed by it in the last fifteen years.

Iron & Wine hive rise up! And put on your casual sport coat and t-shirt, we’re going out for craft beer and cocktails and then to a library fundraiser.

Sad to say that Clark Gregg and Jennifer Grey split a few years ago

Please ask every returning guest “What are your thoughts on Joel Schumacher’s Phantom of the Opera?”

Jenny Maurer

“I am sorry to France !”

Ashamed to report that this was my Solsbury Hill entry point, so it’s definitively In Good Company for me. And Garys… I left the cinema and immediately bought the soundtrack!

Hmm, the episode posted during Oscars week - and surely recorded sometime during this season - being about a movie where 𝐷𝑒𝑛𝑛𝑖𝑠 𝑄𝑢𝑎𝑖𝑑 plays a Boomer/veteran in his industry with a much younger rival? Not like it's 1-to-1, but are we, consciously or not, nodding to THE SUBSTANCE here?

I remember really liking this movie when I first saw it in the theater. I most latched onto the soundtrack, as I was deep into my indie rock era thanks to The O.C. premiering the previous year. I was just listening to David Byrne's "Glass, Concrete & Stone" the other week and wondering where I was introduced to it; such a great song! Also, there is a fifth book in the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series that is set when the four central characters are adults; I don't remember any second generation pants-wearing, unfortunately, but read it 14 years ago so my memory of it is fuzzy. But they reunite because one of them has died, so I'm okay leaving that series of movies at two.

After watching SAG awards, I don’t think the girls like Jamie Lee Curtis. The disdain was palpable.

Re: the whole discussion on Salisbury Hill being too ubiquitous to stick to any one needle drop, I will say it's impossible for me to listen to it in any context now without thinking of that 'The Shining as a romantic comedy' trailer

funny that emily mentions wanting this movie even by 2009…cuz what came out in 2009? up in the air, a movie about corporate downsizing. not to mention the company men the year after, a movie that had oscar buzz…

“Clark Gregg (The Human Stain)” is very similar to the problem with “Renate Reinsve (The Worst Person in the World)” like no I swear she seems lovely

I had the opportunity to meet the brilliant Emily St. James at her book event at the Strand yesterday evening and only had the chance to read the inscription this morning. It calls back to a remark she made on this episode that made me laugh so hard, “The Daughterhood of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.” 😂 I have a lot going on so were it not for this episode, I probably wouldn’t have found out about the event, or wouldn’t have until after it happened which is fairly typical. Thanks, Chris and Joe! 😘

Oh, Joe, you really must watch Old Christine, it’s absolutely delightful and you’d love it
