An annual tradition continues!! In the final days before the Oscar ceremony, it is time for the This Had Oscar Buzz SUPERLATIVES!! We assemble our ballot of picks for various oddball categories that appear in various precursors (and in years past) plus a few categories of our own [trombone sound] because we said so!! Get ready for Best Kiss, Straight Best Friend, the Cannes Prize of the Youth, Best Grownup Love Story, and so much more... including a big obvious omission/snub on our part in one category in particular OOPS! And of course: the Garys pick for best film of the year, the Grolsch People's Choice Award! ENJOY!!

Loving this. Thanks for all the work keeping spirits up at a hard time. I haven’t seen The End, but George MacKay is great in The Beast. Playing three different roles including a incel stalker.

Carrie Williams

Its still ludicrous to me that “Halle Berry “em” made it past the first draft because it sounds like Halle Barium.

Lance Hunter

Only halfway through this episode, but I'm really appreciating Stress Positions finally getting some of the recognition it deserves.

Michelle Brosius

I love seeing Excursion - Turbulent Brilliance in my feed because Shirley MacLaine's voice is in my head the rest of the day :)

Cannot wait to listen to this! Also, Chris, just finished the Vincente Minnelli Screen Drafts ep with Katey (Loved!) and wanted to mention that The Band Wagon always makes me think of Beyoncé and how her music video for Naughty Girl co-starring Usher is inspired by The Band Wagon. Saw the music video for the first time one night while out and instantly knew it was referencing something. She loves her movie musicals!

Joe nominating Austin Butler for the Freedom of Expression award was incredible. Also FYC: Feyd-Rauther's S&M gimp servants and the old lady playing Annie in Thelma, maybe my favourite gag in the entire movie! Hard agree that La Swinton is out here throwing out incredible performances EVERY YEAR without the Academy, Globes, SAG etc batting an eyelid. Maybe she doesn't play the campaign game enough? Memoria, The Room Next Door, Asteroid City, my beloved THREE THOUSAND YEARS OF LONGING and Problemista just in the past four years! The Eternal Daughter was a huge letdown for me, as was The Souvenir Part II (I have... thoughts and feelings on that movie) but Swinton is never less than mesmerising in both.

Jack

Any chance you guys can post the categories first so that we can play along with our own ballot before we listen? 😌🙏

So I'm on the Actor in a Musical or Comedy category, and...yeah, CHALLENGERS is still not only NOT a comedy, but SO not a comedy, SO about the Drama even if it's easy to take in and caught on broadly. Love the Jesse Plemons-KINDS OF KINDNESS nod, though, approve of any attention that that film gets.

John Ananias

Cheers to the shoutout to Fred Hechinger in THELMA, who has not been mentioned barely at all this season, but...we know June Squibb is great in it and it's wonderful to have the showcase for her, but Hechinger is grrrreat in this movie! What a good illustration of someone who feels like a terminal f***-up but IS trying.

Justice for Julia Louis-Dreyfus in Tuesday for getting left out of the Palm Oiseau award. Also when you said you were doing a different animal I was fully expecting monkeys

Frank Ritz

Great episode, as expected! Shout out to Challengers (an already all-time fave for me). Just wanna suggest that I know I (and have to assume other Gary’s) would love to hear the two of you do your own Oscar ballots for a given year. You can do any random pre-blankies years, or even repeat those years so we can hear Chris’ picks and if Joe has any revisions! Just a thought of a content I know I would love to hear. EDIT: to clarify, I’d never choose that over the superlatives as is. So I get if ya only wanna do your own thing :)

Rob

Justice for the piano in Maria.

Riley

y’all thanks for making me almost burst out laughing in the grocery store with the suggestion of Mickey Mouse-sounding Feyd Rautha

natalie

full body guffaw at the gravitas w which chris says "I feel more strongly about the monkey than John Turturro." perfect ep

Tom Houseman

Since neither of them made the cut this year, I’ll share my nominees in two of my favorite categories: ADG Award for Contemporary Art Direction: Civil War Conclave A Different Man I Saw the TV Glow Problemista CDG Award for Contemporary Costumes: Babygirl Challengers Kinds of Kindness Monkey Man The Substance

Hayley

Thank you love, thank you life!

Elizabeth Kite

“I chose the boner slap in Challengers. I think it counts!” As a new Patreon subscriber, this is the content I come here for and you’ve already earned my money. Also finally some love for Problemista, which is criminally underrepresented in 2024 best of lists.

Molly Fromkin

Sweethearts was an unexpectedly delightful film and Caleb Hearon is an absolute hoot in it

Taylor Cole

I’m sorry, but the definitive chick flick of 2024 is Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl

HelenB

Thrilled that Feathers McGraw got his due here

Emily Sabo

Loved the episode! And yes, hearing you guys talk about movies you really loved at festivals (or saw early) made me try and seek them out! I still have to see Hard Truths, which never seemed to come out where I live ( or I missed it)… Along with the Beast, the End, Flow, and Problemista…

Amelia Burger

sometimes i’m riding the subway listening to a podcast and will laugh out loud audibly enough at something that my headphones will pause thinking i’m trying to talk to someone. “okay the monkey’s straight” was one of those moments.

Keegon

the capybara in Flow is canonically queer because it is not voiced by an actual capybara!

German Munoz

One of the highlights of my podcast listening year! Hearing you guys bicker about the Nominees is hilarious and life-giving!

Mike Jenkins

Amazing episode. Thank you for the love for Christmas Eve in Miller's Point, a movie that I drafted on my fantasy league team but have not ever heard a real live person discuss!

J T

Love all the National Anthem mentions!!

Gordon

Jumping in with some more shoutouts for Best Inanimate Object (loooooove Joe's Oddity shoutout here especially) because that sort of category really gets my mind racing: - the mask, A Different Man - the briefcase full of molded dildos, Drive-Away Dolls - the buff snowman, Hundreds of Beavers - the burning television, I Saw the TV Glow - the John McEnroe racket, Kinds of Kindness - Megalon, Megalopolis (alternately, Jon Voight's 'boner') - the giant brain, Rumours - the Scott Baio jigsaw puzzle, Strange Darling - the Activator vial, The Substance - the scooter, Thelma - Norbot, Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl
