We're sending us into spring with a very wintery Coens masterpiece, Inside Llewyn Davis!! We talk about our love for the film, Bruno Delbonnel's cinematography nominations, musicals being nominated for sound Oscars, the ineligibility of "Please Mr. Kennedy," and much more!!

Oof, this might be a rough listen in a way because I love this movie so much and I'm so frustrated that you CAN do it as an Exception (I've always imagined that it was the 10th-place for Best Picture, and in that "5-to-10-but-usually-9" era, I kept thinking, "You COULDN'T have gone to 10 THIS year?").

Sam Hetherington

The un-nominated Coens performance for me is Jennifer Jason Leigh in The Hudsucker Proxy. She’s hysterically funny as well as breaking the sound barrier in words-per-minute.

Me yelling during filmographies: MOM AND UNCLE TOMMY HAVE SEX ALL THE TIME

anth.

the best thing about the Coens is you can understand someone else’s faves even if they don’t line up with yours AT ALL. so Garys, drop your top three CoBros (ranked or in no particular order) 1. The Man Who Wasn’t There 2. Fargo 3. Hail Caesar!

This is the movie that made the John mulaney quote go “hey look at that man” in my head when I saw Oscar Isaac and now he is one of My crushes

What blessings on this glorious Friday

I was living in NYC in 2014. “If/Then” was about to start previews days after Idina performed on the Oscars, and when I tell you that there is no greater joy in the world than walking past the Richard Rogers Theatre THEE FOLLOWING MORNING and seeing official signs and marquis that said STARRING ADELE DAZEEM…

Watching A COMPLETE UNKNOWN a month+ ago (a movie I think is...fine and occasionally great), I couldn't help but think about how much (and how much MORE) I love *this* movie - as depictions of this milieu in space/time go. When I got home from ACU, I went to YouTube and listened to the Jean & Jim/Mulligan & Timberlake version of "500 Miles" - and then a bunch of the rest of the ILD soundtrack, as I am wont to do sometimes.

Peter Smith

Ballad of Wallis Island is very charming!

You guys, The Dig is excellent - the closest thing we’ve gotten to a Merchant Ivory movie in the past few years. Not just Carey Mulligan but also Ralph Fiennes and archeology and British stiff upper lip suppression of emotion and longing for meaning in an ambivalent universe. People should watch The Dig.

Top 10 Coen Performances (following same parameter of 1 per performer and movie) (also without thinking too long on it): 1. Goodman - Barton Fink 2. Bridges - Lebowski (Funnily enough Fink and Lebowski always are low on my rankings, as I’ve never really cared that much for either, but find both of these performances to be out of this world) 3. McDormand - Fargo 4. Cage - Raising Arizona 5. Isaac - Inside Llewyn Davis 6. Jones - No Country for Old Men (coulda picked any of em tbh) 7. Stuhlbarg - A Serious Man 8. Pitt - Burn After Reading 9. Walsh - Blood Simple 10. Nelson - O Brother Where Art Thou (11. Thornton in Man Who Wasn’t There… hurt to leave off) Garys should sound off on this as well

Seconding the recommendation of Show Me a Hero! Truly one of Oscar Isaac's best performances, somehow makes a story about housing incredibly engaging, and boasts a cast that includes Alfred Molina, Bob Balaban and Catherine Keener in addition to Winona Ryder.

Robert Anton

Who wants to play filmographies for F. Murray Abraham with me? No cheating and looking it up. I’ll go first: Scarface.

Apropos of nothing and unrelated to this episode…BUT I’ve had a programming thought for a rare old-school exceptions episode… 1776 (musical, 1972, dir. Peter Hunt) got a single nomination for Cinematography. William Daniels refused a Tony nomination for Featured Actor on the basis that his character is (indisputably) the lead, and I wonder if that had gone differently, would he then have made his way into either Lead or Supporting at the Oscars? It’s a legendary year for the Godfather and Cabaret of it all, but there’s room in a LOT of categories for something like 1776 to have had more of a presence, even if it is existing in a sort of old-Hollywood world among the rest. The right guest is out there for this one!!

Andy Germuga

The miserable making thing about watching as much of a Cannes competition line up as you can find is the “no one has ever heard of this” French movies but there is often some fun to be had there.

requesting that Please Mr. Kennedy be played at my funeral 🚀

Please mr kennedy at the Oscar should also be accompanied by a cover of a ween song

Also: if you don’t like Amelie, the city of Lost children might be your more depressing fantasy speed

I too liked DRIVE-AWAY DOLLS - it's not excellent, but I enjoy zippy, goofy, screwball-y Coens and it's a 𝑔𝑜𝑜𝑑 𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒, as far as I'm concerned. I get finding it a little...trying, though. I dug Margaret Qualley going for the rootin-tootin' Holly Hunter-ish thing she was doing. Looking forward to the next Ethan venture...but hoping that he & Joel reteam at some point.

Okay, this is my third comment in a row in the last hour, I'll stop soon, but I do have to say...a few seconds into the trailer clip, I was thinking, again: This movie's just SO fucking good. It was at #4 on my Coens ranking, I just moved it up to #3 (FARGO stays #1, BARTON FINK stays #2); it's such a full meal, marvelously melancholy and resoundingly funny and a blisteringly knowing character study of, yes, an artist with his principles & integrity and therefore the film's vessel for self-commentary by its writers-directors...but also a guy who's 𝑠𝑢𝑐ℎ a fuck-up, keeping himself in his own vicious circles. I totally get what Feil says about this being a kind of nightmare version of oneself. The music is so not my own wheelhouse - if I even have a wheelhouse, music-wise - but it's great and portrayed with love, including the more "commercial" stuff. What a terrific, deeply felt piece of work.

John Ananias

Speaking of people who are great on SNL (and sorry, but Justin Timberlake was great on SNL even if he's NOT in the "could've been a cast member!!!" league, to me), Adam Driver...and actually, Oscar Isaac too, who's only done the show once, but did really well and his episode is good. But Driver, Driver's been one of the very best hosts of this current era. Also love Joe going, "He was just in MEGALOPOLIS!" right as I'm thinking, "He is both leading man and freak in MEGALOPOLIS, that is part of why that movie exists."

Hannah Nutt

okay, I didn't know I care about it until this moment, but here's my rundown of why JT is a jerk: He threw Jackson under the bus to preserve his image. He's not responsible for her being blacklisted, but he was a jerk about it. He cheated on Britney Spears and then did the Cry Me A River video, implying that she cheated on him. He did interviews about their sex life and implying she was really slutty. Which, knowing how society was in the early aughts had significant impacts on her career. I don't want to cancel him or anything (because I don't care enough) but there are real reasons to find him distasteful, even though i think he's aftern funny on SNL

Clint

“some might even say cherry cherry boom boom…” paws up, little monsters!

Daniel

As a talented yet commercially unsuccessful artist, this film affected me in the deepest of places.

Brandon Skidmore

Joe’s right about Timberlake sorry y’all

I agree about GRAVITY... Masterpiece! It should have an IMAX rerelease every few years. There's an Omni-Imax screen at the science museum where I live...it would be perfect viewing for a day at the science museum! Visit the planetarium and then go watch GRAVITY. Sounds like heaven to me!
