Happy New Year, Garys!! We're starting 2026 with the perhaps seasonally appropriate (and largely forgotten) Snow Falling on Cedars! We're talking about movies that exist only as titles, the career of Ethan Hawke, Robert Richardson's many Oscar nominations, and the potential for a lone cinematography nomination in the current Oscar season!

Elmo is still the mayor of sesame street

Big bird and Bert and Ernie are my favorites

This is my moment to say this is a beautiful movie that my sister and I were in love with as dorky / movie dork teens. Haven't revisited since, but as far as I'm concerned it's a classic (though I'm sure it's pokey and slow!) Also Scott Hicks was one of the first directors whose name I knew because of this and Shine. Anyhow. I have affection for it. Lovely episode! What can I say. We also wore out our Mumford VHS

Anyway the last Tarantino take anyone should have and one that’s correct is : He should have retired and shut his mouth in 2009

Major flashback to my youth orchestra days and everyone being stoked that The Red Violin score won the Oscar. Great film that seems to be forgotten now.

If this was an episode of Las Culturistas the title of ep would be “Elmo Has an Online Presence”. Truly a delightful tangent.

Interested in the education convo… I’m from a small town at the south end of Puget Sound, and I was well into high school before I learned about the Japanese interment that happened in our own backyard. And I learned about it from reading this book NOT for school. Never taught in school the way that other similar topics were. That said, being surrounded by several Native American tribal lands, we did get what I imagine was an unusually sensitive and thorough education around indigenous history, both local and national.

I read this book and I absolutely loved Ethan Hawke back in the day, so why can't I remember if I actually saw this movie or just saw the trailer several times?

Brent Wilson

While I do understand you categorizing it as a movie that only exists as a title...Felicia's Journey is pretty tremendous. Bob Hoskins' performance alone gets it out of that zone for me, pretty sure I'd have given him the Oscar that year if they ever listened to me.

“Never Tear Us Apart” was also used in the prologue of the Euphoria episode (2x03) about the closeted jocks who go to a gay bar to dance to it. It’s a really heartbreaking scene and maybe Levinson’s finest moment.

Brady Thomas

Would it be hokey and anti-Irish to suggest Angelas Ashes for the March exception due to the St. Patty's day connection?

The Count as a Circuit Gay is truly one of the best bits this podcast has ever produced. Otherwise, this book was my arch-enemy as a precocious college student. I absolutely hated it and wanted to be edgy by staging a critical takedown in front of my class because it wasn't as cool as, IDK, Chuck Palahniuk or whoever was cool in the late 90s. A memory I still cringe about.

Elmo is canonically a child but Blue Moon did prove this year that sometimes a child can be a bitchy gay guy.

Thriller/genre novels still have some anticipation involved with adaptations. Gone Girl was probably the last book whose film adaptation was followed with extremely high interest in every corner of pop culture fandom. The Martian, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, an Cloud Atlas all had advanced buzz too. On the literary side, Normal People had it been a film probably would’ve elicited a lot of interest in the casting process too but since it was TV it flew a bit under the radar until it came out.

I was maybe screaming Three Days of the Condor during the game. 😆

Listened to this after Joe’s appearance on the 2000’s Screen Drafts (also a great episode). I think you guys have more than earned the right to re-do early episodes. My Favorite Murder does something called rewind episodes where they comment on what they said back then. Y’all could do something like “For Your Reconsideration”that covers films from the early days of the pod. I want more Mona Lisa Smile discussion!

Madeline Lane-McKinley

Love this one. But have to say there were a lot of teens who weren’t into Leo / were Ethan-crazed at the time and we waited for this for over a year and it very much existed 🫣

Melissa

Ok, so, I know you can't do Red Violin for the show (either main or Patreon) bc it did win the Original Score Oscar, but my jaw dropped when y'all said you hadn't seen it. Please watch it - the story is kinda bonkers and it was coming in the wake of "sexy classical musician" movies like Immortal Beloved, but the score - with solo violin work provided by Joshua Bell who also was the close-up violin double - is incredible. One of my favorites. I took my copy of the OST with me to have Bell sign it at one of his concerts.

Culture Club's Mr. Vain

Joe, I think you were thinking of Martin Landay in Crimes and Misdemeanors.

Stephanie Radcliffe

Love the Ethan Hawke discussion. I still haven't seen "The Last Movie Stars" because it wasn't released in Canada! He's told stories that it came about because his wife got tired of him constantly talking about Paul Newman so he made the series instead. I also ride hard for his performance in "Juliet, Naked". It's very Troy Dyer got old and grew a conscience.

“JFK is my number one with a bullet.” I’ll take “Ways to get on a watchlist” for $1000, Alex. 😂🤣 Seriously gave myself a coughing fit laughing when you said that and it just flew right by both of y’all. Back and to the left 😂

No Way

Big Bird is still out here! Don't sleep on Big Bird, the culture loves him!

laura linney did play shmiranda shpriestly in the nanny diaries! and if my gay 13 year-old self is to be believed she slayed!
