This month, we walk nine extra floors to give you a little something special on the side. We're looking back at the work of Rob Reiner and having early Valentine's Day celebration with WHEN HARRY MET SALLY! We get into the film's iconic deli scene, our favorite Reiners, Oscars we'd give to Nora Ephron, Driving Miss Daisy winning comedy Globes, and much more!

Would love to hear Chris defend the premise that There’s Something about Mary is not a romcom. Hot take: it is a romcom! It’s only annoying because it seems like Chris wants to make the genre unnecessarily arid. Romcoms are more fun with the Farelly Brothers circa 98 inside the tent.

I do think this is when Billy Crystal was the most handsome Miracle whip> Mayo

Wow almost everyone involved in this movie died before their time. Billy and Meg must be feeling it.

I'd give director to Spike since Oliver Stone already had one. Nora can win screenplay. Soderbergh would win director later too. And then we wouldn't still be waiting for a Black best director. But they were never giving an oscar to THAT movie when the Nice Racist movie was right there. And then they did it to him again for Green Book but at least he won Adapted. Always with the Driving Solves Racism movies.

Thanks for this one! My husband and I got married on NYE in NYC and had that speech in our wedding too! We watch this movie over dinner every anniversary before Andy and Anderson :)

Betty Spaghetti is Tracy Reiner - Penny Marshall’s daughter/Rob Reiner’s adopted daughter

I’m a big fan of ‘Mixed Nuts’ too or ‘Lifesavers’ as it was known in Australia.

Please go watch The Sure Thing! And reconsider your rankings after it. 😀

my hot take on this movie is that Harry's thesis (whe he is all of 22 and why should we listen to 22 year old men about relationships) is proven wrong. Harry says that he wants to sleep with all of his women friends. But as he becomes friends with Sally as an adult there's no hidden agenda nor is he secretly pining for her. They are genuinely friends and when they have sex it's not because he takes advantage of her. It was a vulnerable moment between them and then they fell in love with each other. Or realized they were in love. But for a long while they were friends without sex getting in the way who supported each other and genuinely got along without any hint or attraction between them.

Cosmic Justice should be an Excursion mainstay. Who do you bump out for a nom should be added to the rules too btw

I want to add ti the love for ThE Sure Thing - I know it’s all very It Happened One Night but what’s wrong with that? It was the cutest John Cusack ever was and highly quotable and deserves more love. There.

If we’re on the subject of great Carrie Fisher lines, the moment in The Last Jedi where she tells Poe Dameron to “get your head out of your cockpit” is right up there for me. And hottest Billy Crystal is, for me anyway, “Running Scared.”

Luisa Parnes

I loved hearing them talk about Nora Ephron so much. My tastes are usually more aligned with Joe but as far as Ephron goes, I’m 100% with Chris.

I think WHMS… and Moonstruck are two of the most perfect romcoms of all time. I remember when it came out on video. There was a giant cardboard cut out of Billy & Meg that took up a full corner of Blockbuster. I was too young to see it then but the life size poster made me yearn to see it. Adults! In sweaters! With the NYC skyline in the background! It looked like true city living to me and I wanted to be there. Carrie Fisher’s voice from this movie is always in my head. Especially how she says « personal growth »

Thank you for this exceptional exception episode! Caveat with love, the arranged marriage couple was Chinese, not Japanese. Overall, my favorite exception episode!

The only part of the movie that grates on me now is Crystal’s “Malomars, the world’s best cookie” bit only because that pontificating “my likes are the best” dude was about to deeply infect culture to such an extreme. Not the movie’s fault and I was reminded how many times I went back to see this while it was in theaters. (Yes, I’m old.)
