For this month's Exception, we journey across the globe with Katey Rich to Baz Luhrman's Australia, the director's large scale follow-up to his Oscar-winning Moulin Rouge!. Topics include the films' handling of multiple genres, the perception that the film was a box office bomb, criticisms around its length (and the upcoming expansion as a miniseries, Faraway Downs), and Hugh Jackman's one-year tenure as Oscar host.

This movie is absolutely fascinating in how it's essentially two movies in one so I can't wait to delve in

Going to give Australia another viewing after listening to that; haven’t revisited it since thinking “oh” after the original cinema screening! Great episode and a fantastic run of content (what are we going to listen to tomorrow?!)

Wonderful discussion! I love these Turbulent Brilliance episodes. I do remember watching Australia first run and being slightly befuddled by its tone (and length)... looking forward to revisiting it again. Also, curious note about Nicole Kidman not having many opportunities to do comedy. I took a look at her IMDB and maybe, MAYBE, Moulin Rouge and Being the Ricardos are the only two that qualify? The rest of her stuff is bonkers. Lots of "does this really exist?" content! I feel like mid-aughts was very hit/miss for her.

I feel like the first time you guys saw Essie Davis was SURELY potential Exceptions episode (although it may be an over-performer, for all I know) Girl With A Pearl Earring

I read that Australia is being re-edited into a miniseries for Disney+ and re-named as Faraway Downs. So if you liked the movie, you'll get even more of it soon!

“They just shot it in Chicago” Literally SCREAMING lmao. And thank you so much for doing this episode!! Speaking as someone who worked for Bazmark for close to a decade, I appreciate the love for CM and Baz 💗

Hello from Australia! I always get a kick out of American podcasts chatting about Australian history, geography and history - fascinating what facts and insights manage to get shared - they're just the top of the (very complicated, fraught, fascinating) iceberg! This film had incredibly mixed responses from indigenous Australians, which is part of the broader discussions in Australia about the legacy of our colonial history and what stories get told.

As much as I love hearing people from outside Australia talk about us, as an Australian I feel you needed an Australian on the episode to give some context to stuff. Plus we would have won the end game because we know a few Hugh Jackman films that came before he became famous overseas.

Re Ben Mendelsohn, a hill I’ll die on is that he deserved a best supporting nod for ‘The Place Beyond the Pines’ for very specific, deeply personal reasons. As a person born and raised in Schenectady, NY, he seemed so much like every perennially down-on-his-luck townie dude I’d ever met, who wouldn’t be able to find Australia on a map let alone hailing from there. He. Nailed. It.

No Way

Not to do with this, but I just have to say I’ve only ever seen Inside Man on cable, and it was BET that showed it lol.

I obviously need to see this movie but it was only this episode that learned it was NOT a musical. All this time…

Pella's Window

So glad yall vibe with this movie. I have fond memories of watching this movie. I've long been fascinated by stories of Australia's Lost Generation. Two films on this subject that would be extremely good main feed episodes Rabbit Proof Fence (2002) and The Sapphires (2015).

So funny as a New Zealander to hear it referenced. I always have to remind people NZ and major Australia cities are like 4-5 hours on a plane. You can get from London to Paris in under an hour. Though the visa rules make travel a lot easier now U.K. isn’t in the EU.
