My cringe o'meter is so sensitive I'm not sure I can even get through the answer to this question. Even in installments.

This was a trip to revisit. Some forgotten context: - Katy Brand was nominated for the screenplay for Good Luck to You Leo Grande - Sandy Powell received the BAFTA fellowship that year (which is their lifetime achievement award)

Chris, Joe - I could not have asked for a better in-depth analysis of Ariana’s epic. THANK YOU! 1. I’m a (geriatric millennial) man of colour and had NO idea what ‘did the thing meant’ 💀. I truly thought she’d run out of words. 2. Pointless is great! 3. I also love Ariana, even more after this. 4 - I’m torn over whether she’s doing an… accent (?) when she belts out Hong Chau’s name 😬 I fully screamed throughout this ep and so many good performances to go look up too!

Oh and… Ariana followed up with a show in London where she performed the rap plus ‘Ray of Light’, ‘Hand in my Pocket’ and ‘Poor Unfortunate Souls’ and sold MERCH with the BAFTA lyrics on. Unhinged perfection, but she did it to raise money for a trans support charity which is awesome.

Maybe Ana was just having a bad day. (Or she really is mean; it’s hard to tell.) Cate Blanchett gives “suffer no fools” more than mean, but she does have her moments. I remember her pressing Margot Robbie about liking Slipknot/metal once on Graham Norton in a way that felt unnecessary. And she had a half-mean/half-hilarious response to Kate Winslet asking if she found horror movies funny in that one THR roundtable. JLC’s performance worse than Rami Malek’s, Chris? Really?

This is my favorite call-in so far. It helped me overcome my cringe blockage in watching the number and gave us a rundown of Joe’s “mean in real life” list which seems to be topped by Chris. Howled through the whole thing. Love these. Appreciate the respect for Ariana’s sincerity. Her announcing of Ke Huy Quan at the big show still chokes me up. There are so many worse things to be than an eager theater kid.

Brittany Murphy sang Somebody to Love by Queen in Happy Feet. It’s pretty good

I didn't think Jamie Lee Curtis was particularly bad in EEAAO (maybe simply "broad") - she looked like she was having a blast, which was fun to see - BUT, it wasn't the supporting role that should have been honored. Stephanie Hsu did most of the heavy supporting actor lifting in that film and was wonderful. She's honestly the performance I remember, out of the two.

Just listened to/half-watched that Ann Reinking “Against All Odds” performance at my desk. Woof! What was she on?!

Unprompted and off topic but I'd LOVE if Joe granted us Patreon Garys his annual Nominations Morning Nerd List template for 2023/2024
