As we celebrate the release of Barbra Streisand's memoir My Name Is Barbra (and its essential 48 hour audiobook), this month's exception is Ms. Streisand's third directorial effort The Mirror Has Two Faces! Topics include Lauren Bacall's Oscar hopes thwarted by Count Chocula herself Juliette Binoche (and if the right performance won), The First Wives Club presenting Best Original Song, and Streisand and Jeff Bridges dryhumping on the streets of New York.

Speak your Bruno Kirby truth, Chris! (You’re absolutely right.)

I demand the chili recipe (please?) 🥰

Thank you for reminding me of that very special ‘Coffee Talk.’ I loved the character of Linda Richman so much. 30 years on, I still use ‘verklempt’ and ‘talk amongst yourselves.’ Also, Roseanne before she lost her mind: those were the days.

Loved this. I’m a Binoche voter all day every day here (I think she’s support and Jean Baptiste is a co-lead, but 🤷‍♂️). It’s insane that Binoche - one of the greatest actresses of all time - still only has 2 nominations, and they’re for Miramax movies in which she speaks English. Certified Copy was right there. But yeah; I feel like the narrative Bacall had at the time (screen legend) goes for Binoche equally at this point. So the performance tips it. It must be a French dream BYE.

The thought of being alone with Barbra and her cloned dogs in a garden terrifies me. I feel like I'd end up one of the dolls in the shop in her mall in her basement.

City Slickers holds up but as someone who recently turned 40, I can't believe that Billy Crystal is acting like he's two steps away from the nursing home.

Flashing right back to seeing this movie with MY MOM on opening Saturday at age 14

When I did the math and realised this was two years before The Dude I nearly died!

speaking of brenda vaccaro, has anyone else seen once is not enough? extremely campy, extremely entertaining…and brenda’s best supporting actress nom for it has got to be one of the wackiest oscar acting noms ever.

Commented on the wrong TB episode so moving this here… Joe will have to be haunted because Chris did indeed say THE MAIN EVENT. Sorry to this man.

Matthew Kern

It's an utterly ridiculous movie that I adore against all better judgement. Thanks for giving it some love here. I too will be bereft when I finish the audio book. I am now in the 90s.

I was breathlessly waiting for someone to acknowledge that one of Barbra's overly emphatic nodding students during her Columbia lecture is "Hostel" director Eli Roth.

Zoe Smith

I only jsut started the episode but I want to say a great recipe to make in your dutch oven Joe would be a boeuf bourguignon, that was the first thing I made when I got mine and it was amazing.

When I heard the mention of this conversation in the Heat episode, had to come here and chime in. The building was at West End Avenue and 84th Street. I lived on 84th between WEA and Riverside at the time— they parked a huge generator right outside our building / lights on all night. One day I walked out of my building and THERE was Ms Streisand’s directors chair — it must have just been put aside for a moment because no one was near it. I… I touched it.

On the subject of the Heat episode, I just saw the picture of old Bradley Cooper on poppers from Maestro and I fully SCREAMED. This looks so demented

I saw this movie years after it came out. I think I initially dismissed it as schmaltzy. It's not a GREAT movie, but I have to say that I found the adult romance between Bridges & Streisand to be rather sweet. Also... I might have Lauren Bacall as my pick to have won Best Supporting that year. I adore Binoche and her performance in The English Patient is riveting, but I think she should have been a best actress contender that year... Bacall is feisty, witty, sharp, and surprisingly vulnerable in Mirror. Her scene at the breakfast table where she talks about some of her own regrets is a stunning performance. She even looks beaten down. Nothing I had actually seen from her before.

So when I was watching this fantastic mess of a movie ("They're called breasts!") for the fiftieth time I spied a blooper. Reflected in the glass behind Barbra you can see a crew member drinking a beer. I have a photo of it, but I can't seem to share photos on this site? If there's a way to, let me know!
