This month's Excursion lands right between the arrival of the first major precursors and the quiet of the holidays, so what better than to give you a deep dive checking in with the state of the race! We talk about how the Globes are still Globes-ing, the four Best Picture frontrunners that look to  dominate the craft categories, and the acting frontrunners.

You can never talk too much about Saltburn

I don’t want Barbie to win Best Picture because I think it’d tarnish the movie’s legacy. I’ve already seen people criticize the movie for it’s Corporatism and shallow commentary, which I disagree with, but winning BP would put a massive target on it’s back. I think the opposite case could be made for Oppenheimer. If that movie loses BP it’ll gain the reputation as the masterpiece that lost Best Picture. In some ways Oppenheimer vs Killers of the Flower Moon reminds me No Country for Old Men vs There Will Be Blood.

The Color Purple is going to do *incredibly* well in the box office and I think it’s doing one of the best press runs of this awards season. Fantasia & Danielle’s individual stories are relatable and heartwarming. Classic “underdogs” who’ve fought hard to earn their respect in the industry and are breaking out in their first major movie roles. Add Oprah who’s made reimagining TCP one of her life’s missions and the spending power of her fan base alone and this is a future number one movie in the country. This is an incredibly beloved piece of Black pop culture and The Aunties™️©️®️ have a hell of a lot of spending power.

Ditto, Chris. That IP reference and then visual callback in Maestro also made me scream.

Joe's "You're a little clumsy" made me cackle on the train like a crazy person.

Ahhhh “Academy Award Nominee ™️ 65”!!!!!! Worth every penny in laughs. TYVM

Wet Hot American Summer doesn’t have a sequel film. It has 2 Netflix series!

Braden Poapst

Diane Warren did write a song for 80 For Brady that was performed by Dolly Parton, Belinda Carlisle, Cyndi Lauper and Gloria Estefan. I will not be shocked if this ends up on the shortlist!

WRT. Color purple, I’m just happy to see fantasia gertjng. A gig

The international submission I loved that I saw at a film fest was Macedonia's Housekeeping for Beginners. Not sure if it has a shot, but I'm rooting for it.

The Creator is getting Oscar SFX. Terrible film especially considering content around Actors Strike, but The Creator benefits from a great aesthetic, good BTS practices and competing blockbusters misuse and overwork of Visual effects teams

Clint

my gut tells me the oppenheimer oscar sweep is kind of a done deal…

I always love these state of the race conversations and could listen to two more hours. I’m feeling very relieved to hear that we are now confident that Cillian will be nominated. I got nervous after the last call in episode!

Re: THE IRON CLAW…I have no idea how it couldn’t have been ready for festivals. I saw it in early May and it felt done or at least very very close to the finish line. They ended up apparently taking out 15 minutes from that version. Loved the thing when I see it back then, gonna make sure to catch a screener of it—just awaiting its arrival in my mailbox or getting a code emailed to me.

not me silently SCREAMING 'Guardians of the Galaxy' while Chris stumbled on Cradley Booper... Also... so intrigued if there'll be another Andrea Riseborough situation at this year's Oscars, given how successful that campaign was. Hard to predict who but it feels like a non-zero possibility.
