Peter Smith

such fun pics by the Sugar Daddy Garys

Did anybody else go into this completely blind without knowing that it was a musical? Because I did, and it made for a truly surprising and magical experience. I loved how all of the 8 women got their own song, and the little dance they did during the final number was just incredible.

This was my selection and I'm so excited to listen to this episode! I have such fond memories of insisting on renting this from Blockbuster in 2003 and watching it with my Mom who gave me the WORST side eye when it turns out -- spoiler alert -- Virginie's character was sleeping with her father. Sorry, Mom.

Scott McClellan

One of the last movies I was able to see with a Netflix DVD! Love it

Jenny Maurer

Oh’ this movie is in Alonso duralde s first book from 2005!

Braden Poapst

If any other Garys are looking for the movie, if you have access to a VPN, this is streaming on Mubi in Canada!

Chrissy

I just wanted to mention re: discussion of The Piano Teacher, Dan Levy’s Criterion closet video has a very funny anecdote about him recommending the movie to families when he worked at a video store, only to discover what it was actually about much later on

Eurocheese

Chris, thank you for giving us a Huppert Top 5. I always feel like I'm behind the curve with her, though I did love her in this and The Piano Teacher. (I was less excited about her 2016 performances, to be honest.) I really want to see La Ceremonie, and glad to hear it made your list. The Taste of Things was lovely, and Binoche should be more in the Supporting Actress conversation, though she just misses my personal five (Brooks, Foy, McAdams, Pike, Randolph). I went to a screening and because of illness, the production designer and wife of the director (who the movie is dedicated to) spoke instead. She should really be in the conversation too, if only for making my audience moan so loud we were laughing at ourselves while eyeing that food.

I'm sorry to say that Papa t'es plus dans le coup would not have been eligible for a Best Song Oscar because it was released in France in the early 60s. I believe Marie Laforet and Francoise Hardy released a few of the other songs on the soundtrack, but I'm not sure if any others were written for the movie?

Rob

Surprised to learn that Joe can’t handle The Truth

Rebecca

Really enjoyed this movie. And thank you to my local public library for having an available copy.

Just to complement Chris' theories on why France didn't pick Anatomy of a Fall: I think there's a fair possibly the committee looked at Palm D'Or Winner, Neon-distributed little Anatomy of a Fall and thought well that's getting a Best Picture nomination (as did we). So that's well taken care for. Let's try to get another one of ours into the mix and this one does need the push. There's also the matter with Justine Triet's speech at Cannes that pissed a lot of people off and she's not shy to declare to anyone who asks that the committee's decision was a political one. All of this + the language factor Chris mentioned i think all factored in and they've now lost a free Oscar!

Absolutely Excursions for Personal Ballots and PLEASE Excursions for Joe's Alternative Oscar History, with the special feature of guessing the BP Top 10 of said year

Literally unsubscribing over how bad Joe’s Scorsese takes are. Katy Rich too, yikes. Goodbye.

Lowell Bartholomee

I was sad when "Every 1s a Winner" went away but I'm now deeply in love with both versions of the new theme song. Though I sometimes have to explain when someone catches me playing air drums and saying "Dick Poop."

Was dying to see if someone, anyone, was going to pull a Frances Fisher this season and fully SCREAMED when Joe described her running a pyramid scheme. Also... I hate to be that person that tries to predict the class of '23 before it happens but... I also love the thought experiment and would love people's comments. My votes: BlackBerry (as dragged on the episode), Dumb Money, Wish, Passages (sadly), The Killer, Beau is Afraid, Next Goal Wins, Cat Person, Lee, You Hurt My Feelings, Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret and some hot takes... Priscilla and Ferrari.

Allie

Oh, this one is a high school Logo classic for me. Hand to God this was the first thing I saw Deneuve in. Huppert too, but that’s less suprising given that I’m a millennial just slightly too young to know her. France has shot themselves in the foot with international feature several times by now, yeah? They seem to routinely neglect the crossover for something that played better in France itself.

Joel Cunningham

I definitely recommend watching Umbrellas of Cherbourg as soon as possible, and then following it up with The Young Girls of Rochefort. I have watched both in the last few months and am fully Demy-pilled

Hayden Claborn

Would like to tell Chris that I watched Atlantics the other day for a college class and thought it was great. Need that Criterion.

Molly Fromkin

Joe, if you want to be the Cool Uncle, get the nephew into Spidey and his Amazing Friends! Fall Out Boy does the theme song!

Lowell Bartholomee

My copy of the movie arrived last night. I'm so excited.

German Munoz

Just catching up to this. Still laughing at both Chris and Joe screaming "Marcel!!!". I tried to make that joke with my straight friends back in the day, and none of them had any idea I was referencing Cotillard. I have truly found my people!
