It's finally here! What are your thoughts on this week's Class of 2023 episode? Do you have episodes you look forward to in the years to come?

I do have to say I'll miss the Cake Memorial and the Dr. Louise Banks Award! They had a nostalgic quality to them, in a way

Hayden Claborn

Guess I’m the lone The Royal Hotel defender. That movie was great.

Chauncey Telese

Iron Claw The Killer Passages All of Us Strangers Dumb Money AYTGIMM and Ferrari sound like they'll be great

Sam Hetherington

I don’t think a year is enough distance for Saltburn. The Oscar Buzz of Saltburn is going to look so much more insane the further we get from it

Lots of thoughts and feels which will likely be written much more eloquently by other listeners. However, I gotta note Joe's husky voice in this episode as a welcomed addition, likely due to many hours of excessive podcasting following nomination morning (the Lord's work, thank you.) Hearing him speak in coarse yet inviting tones on woulda's and shoulda's of 2023 moviedom was a treat. I was reminded of a great Meryl Streep quote she gave during her 'Fantastic Mr. Fox' press tour. Famously, she had a cold during the recording but felt it lifted her performance. She noted the attraction of this texture of voice. On Felicity Fox and Joseph Reid, I must say it works.

Jenny Maurer

Yea I was worried about the husky voice there. Feel better Joe ❤️

Iron claw: My one consolation during the nominations was that at least it would be on thob!!

This Had Oscar Buzz

Also just saying we finished recording and I immediately realized not mentioning La Chimera. I am indeed part of the problem.

Wes Anderson is at such an odd point in his career. People seem to discount him more than ever, but I also think he's going to win his first Oscar for his short this year. If that happens, when we eventually get an Asteroid City episode, I'd be curious to hear how you think some directors/actors have been impacted by Oscar short wins - Martin McDonagh, Andrea Arnold, Terry George, Riz Ahmed, etc.

Michelle Brosius

So excited for the future episodes on Saltburn, May December, and Asteroid City - three movies that I'm puzzled as to why they didn't get ANY nominations. Saltburn and Asteroid City seemed tailor-made for production design nods and screenplay. Joe & Chris - I completely understand your arguments on the Barbie "snub" debate. Your reasonings are sound and I love your take that this goes beyond the Academy - we need more opportunities for female directors to make the movies they want to make, and we need to go see/support these movies to have better representation at the Oscars. I still wish Gerwig got the nom for directing. She understood dolls and how/why children, girls especially, play with them. The movie spoke to me for at least incorporating the many ways I used to play with Barbies... that was important to the direction and world-building, I felt.

Random observation: IMO Godzilla Minus One addressed similar themes to Oppenheimer with more emotional resonance and, bonus, my ass didn’t fall asleep while watching it. I wasn’t expecting a Kaiju movie to move me to tears (more than once), the FX weren’t empty calories as is so often the case these days, the monster’s arrival provided a legitimate jump-scare, and how many movie stars are at the top of their game 70 years into their career? 🤷🏻‍♀️ Parents, kids, and the target demographic for most major releases (adolescent males) all left the theater happy. Much like Barbie, it reminded me of what they mean when they say ‘movie magic.’

What a great listen! So many eps to look forward to, though I would be remiss if I did not stump for the great Frederick Wiseman and his doc MENUS-PLAISIRS – LES TROISGROS. I mean, those hot chefs alone! And indeed, this is far from over, we haven't seen the last of LEE...

Re: France submitting The Taste of Things instead of Anatomy of a Fall for international feature — do we know whether Anatomy of a Fall would’ve qualified? Genuine question - I don’t remember what proportion of the dialogue was English, but I would believe you if you told me there was too much.

Joseph

is it just Twitter speculation that France chose The Taste of Things over Anatomy of a Fall because of what Triet said in her speech about Macron? it sounds believable to me, but maybe i just like the idea of a smoked-filled room of spiteful French men conspiring against Triet because that's funny

Cethan Leahy

The Grolsch award always makes me laugh since the movie with the most prominent Grolsch product placement is "Sliding Doors"

Robert Anton

Love the Air hate. Not that I ever enjoy hating on a movie but the praise for it has been befuddling. It would truly be the favorite movie of Jude Law’s character from I ❤️ Huckabees.

Kara Hogan

chiming in to add that I look forward to this ep every year - thanks guys! But also I drafted FOE for VMFL and I’m the only one in my mini-league that had a movie that gave them NEGATIVE points!!!

Harriet Ware

Madonna is my birthday twin hahah

Martin Schneider

SO MANY GOOD TAKES. Yes, BlackBerry/Howerton just OK. Yes, AIR quite ordinary and needledrops = bad. Lazy. Yes, the predigested loathing of Wonka was WILDLY overdetermined. [I could say a lot here. Suffice to say director track record good, actor track record good, trailer good. What's the problem??] Yes, everyone was WAY too hard on Saltburn. And finally, not a take but Joe might be the first person to get me to accept all the framing devices in Asteroid City.

Martin Schneider

Blackberry needledrops on the other hand = good

Gosia

Such a great class and enjoyed the superlatives ! Too many episodes to look forward to so I’ll just add my vote to what might be the first one (and join the company of other gems as first in their class like Dear Evan Hansen and Cats) : Saltburn ! (Also You Hurt My Feelings would be a great episode option)

Mera Hitchman

I’m a little late to the chat, I was a bit busy reading about a certain podcast in The New York Times…(congrats y’all!).

John Ananias

I felt a kind of unfair relief listening to Joe articulate exactly why I've avoided watching 𝐴𝑖𝑟 - and that's the unfair, I haven't seen it, but that trailer, man...it looked exactly as it was described here. What I'm avoiding far more adamantly, though, is TikTok, and so I also LOVED the little stretch about that and about the...the effect it's having on film conversation.

Brady Thomas

Am I the one Gary who's mom dragged the whole family to see "The Boys in the Boat" on Christmas Eve? That would be a pick if there was a superlative for the movie that will make your parents say "that was nice, why didn't that get nominated?"

J Kyle Wilsor

Are You There, God is my #1. What a feat of adaptation, and acted so beautifully by all. I can’t wait for this episode…knowing Saltburn will be the first, I suppose I’ll have to be prepared to wait at least another 2 years to hear it…I know you’ll make that $120 worth it! Love you guys

Brian Forte

Bravo to Joe for the Class of 2023 trailer video - so fantastically done! 👏

AJW

I want a Joe and Chris Traitors podcast!

Wilson Belbin

A great episode! I’m interested in the patreon class of 2023. Besides May December I’m having a hard time picking out others. Napolean and Nyad are the other ones that come to mind. But those feel like they got the max nominations they were going to get.

Nomiddlename Davis

I would love a separate discussion on Class of 2023 Exceptions. Like not as extensive as this one but just a curiosity of what films would count? Napoleon is a big one for me.

Ruby Levine

I wanted to thank you guys for talking about A Thousand and One so much -- I made the effort to go see it (had to borrow a friend's membership to our art museum for a members-only screening) and it was very worth it.

Taylor Cole

Not that I didn’t love the outro music we got, but given the Ketchup entertainment talk, it feels like a real missed opportunity to drop on The Ketchup Song by Las Ketchup.

Olivia Davidson

Can’t wait to hear Chris say “Ohio cinema” when we get our Bikeriders episode in 2027 (my friend ran into the whole cast at a bar in downtown Cincinnati lol).

Jameson Davis

Great ep--always one of the best of the year. Asteroid City was my favorite movie of the year and I cannot wait until we get a whole episode of Chris articulating exactly why it is such a masterpiece. I think Joe's anti-anti-Saltburn stance is so funny because I think so much of that discourse is dependent on your own social media bubble and what the dominant initial reaction was. Also I was inspired to check out Masters of the Air and imagine my surprise when it's Callum Turner and not Josh O'Connor!!

Jack Greenwood

I just need Joe to know that I’m a Gen Z gay who loved All of Us Strangers 😭 my husband and I drove 2 Hr and 45 min to see it because it wasn’t playing anywhere close to us.

Eliseo

Great episode! Always look forward to this post Oscar nod tradition.

Suzanne Carter

Thank you for being realistic about the nature of the Oscars while not casting aspersions on Barbie. This discussion exemplifies why THOB is my favorite podcast.

Liesl

The declaration that Pete Davidson is the worst part of Dumb Money? I FEEL SEEN. That character added nothing and was incredibly annoying.

Dusty Meatballs

Mommy and Daddy were fighting a lot on this podcast. Should we be worried??😉😉

John Ancona

Destroyed to learn about the correct pronunciation of Andrew Haigh which completely nullifies my silly movie league team name (Andrew Hayyyyy). Gary fail

Matt Buechner

Always look forward to this ep. And I always look forward to Katey Rich guest eps!

Jeremy M

Great episode! Chiming in to disagree with one small point that Joe makes. You said that Gen Z gays are not seeing All of Us Strangers, and I am here to report that at the Chicago Art House theatre that I work at the number one demographic is the 18-25 year old queer community, which came out strong for this movie. We were in fact told we were the number one earning theatre in the country for this movie on opening weekend! Now, even four weeks later the baby gays are coming out strong for Mescal & Scott. Great, insightful work throughout the episode

Elliott Sainsbury

1. Barbie discourse was spot-on 2. THANK YOU Joe and Chris for talking about 'films that don't exist'. Certain online (cough) communities (cough) that aren't this one get super defensive about this! Nobody can convince me the White Men Can't Jump remake with Jack Harlow exists, or the film where Adam Driver fights dinosaurs or whatever.

Janine Liberty

Great episode as always. I was surprised there was no discussion of You Hurt My Feelings -- I knew it was never gonna happen nominations-wise, but I did hope the Julia Louis-Dreyfus / Nicole Holofcener combo would put it in the conversation.

J T

I loved the brief Christopher Abbott discussion that started from discussing Fair Play/Alden Ehrenreich.

Luisa Parnes

I have a theory about Wish - I think it was secretly written by AI and if it had done well, Disney would be like “we were right, darn writers!!!”
