For this month's excursion, we're bringing you our long-hyped Superlative awards!! We're giving you an entire awards show's worth of precursor awards categories - from our beloved AARP M4Gs to the MTV Movie Awards, from word salad Sundance prizes to lifetime achievement awards! Joe and Chris are offering their personal ballots for selected categories and then battling it out for what makes the eventual ballot. And as a grand finale, it all leads up to the reveal of the Garys selection for best film of 2023!

A note: stats post coming in the next few days, once folks have had a chance to listen to the full episode...

Passages song? Message in a Bottle. Passage in a Butthole. Done.

Loved this so much.

Stephanie Radcliffe

Loved this! But missed Marshawn Lynch in Bottoms in the straight friend category, he was robbed.

Ethan McElhinny

Loved all the Mutant Mayhem love. I’m an adult who refuses to grow up who thinks those teen voice performances are the best acting of the year.

Frank Ritz

Chris ya gotta release the full ranking, and the tallies, and how it all mathed out!! Be the change you want to see in the world! Also I know it wasn’t the exact spirit of what you were doing, but I almost did want winners for every category. Perhaps in the future, if you set the nominees in this way (which I loved), you could also get your Gary’s voting on multiple superlatives? Just a thought! Super fun, and can’t wait for next years!

Clint

imagine kirsten dunst in the todd haynes wheelhouse…

Peter Smith

Chris being down on a lot of the silly comedies of the year then being high on TMNT Mutant Mayhem was surprising. Great movie, should have been nominated

Marie

The moment in No Hard Feelings that Andrew Barth Feldman reacts to the pool sound in the bar is the funniest moment of the year

natalie

"Marin Ireland - All" you are so real for that.....

Caleb Wilson

Snoopy, yet again abandoned.

Molly McNeeley

FYI for anyone who was hoping to see it pre-Oscars, Robot Dreams is getting a one-night-only theatrical showing on March 6.

Kara Hogan

Per some other pods that have discussed the casting branch - it’s apparently pretty small! So we may end up seeing some interesting nominees!

Michelle Brosius

Public Service Announcement: Past Lives is now playing on Kanopy app!

Rhys Ifans bet reminds me of the TIFF 2023 movie that’s never going to get released that he’s in, MOTHER COUCH, playing Ewan McGregor’s brother with an indecipherable accent. If any other Gary’s saw this movie with me, LMK!

Elliott Sainsbury

As Meryl said during her Globes Iron Lady speech - ‘Fantastic!’ Would love more original categories in 2025! The Frances Fisher Award for best campaigning, Best Needle Drop (PIMP in Anatomy of a Fall?) and the Goldie Hawn memorial for oddest pronunciation of a nominee (eg Dick Poop, Women are Talking).

Molly Fromkin

“Sometimes a gay man’s best friend is a woman who slays” merch when

Amy Patrick

The best part of the Blue Ivy moment is when the film cuts directly to the concert footage of “Diva”. Comedy moment of the year.

John Ananias

I love the love for 𝑌𝑜𝑢 𝐻𝑢𝑟𝑡 𝑀𝑦 𝐹𝑒𝑒𝑙𝑖𝑛𝑔𝑠 - that's remained one of my very favorites of 2023, and even though I don't need an awards season to validate my taste or whatever, it would've been nice to see JLD and Holofcener show up a bit more (at all?) for it.

Had to pause the In The Line of Fire trailer and jesus it's a masterpiece
