[Becky Something voice] sorry for the delay! Chime in on this week's Beautiful Boy episode!

This movie was one of the first times I was ever part of an advanced test screening for a movie (the other times being Tick Tick Boom and Emancipation - there’s a clear winner in this bunch) and the only thing I remember was sitting next to a young Timmy stan who was filling out the survey and sobbing while saying he doesn’t understand how there will be a better performance that year. The rest of the audience felt very lukewarm to bored by the movie.

Re: Little Women being “ready” for Cannes in 2019, but holding it back until Christmas time, I’ll add that I saw an audience test screening with a feedback form and everything in August of 2019. And the facilitator indicated that they were still working on the movie, and so our feedback was important. Who knows how true that was? Especially since I can’t really recall any changes from the cut I saw in August vs the movie that got released. But ostensibly, there were still working on it past Cannes through the summertime. I signed some form at the time that I would talk or post about the screening, but I’m guessing the statute of limitations is up on that. ALSO, the name “Timothee Chalamet” only plays in my head to the tune of the “it’s just a shot away” line of Gimme Shelter.

I'll say that Joe was too hard on Steve Carrell. The number of his performances that aren't comedy adjacent are much fewer. If you look at the straight down the middle comedies he's done, most flopped, so of course he's tried other things. Studio comedies are barely being made now and if you look at the track record for his comedies in the 2010s they pretty much all flopped. Also, I thought he was pretty great in The Patient. A tough watch and Domnall Gleeson was super creepy.

I swear that as Joe read off Steve Carell's filmography it all seemed wrong. Somehow to me Evan Almighty should have been before the Office, Anchorman should have been during the Office, and Foxcatcher should have been during his final season. How in the world was Bewitched the same year as season 1?

Timmy C was so incredible in Little Women as a man falling in love with how women love and care for each other that he'll have to really really fuck up in the future for me to not have a soft spot for him in the future

Betty

They're called Gru-pies.

1. Completely forgot TC was in Beautiful Boy 2. TC's shouting "Fingerling Potatoes!!" with glee in Don't Look Up is also one of my fave line deliveries of his :) 3. Thank you for validating my Bryan Cranston feelings. He bugs me in most dramatic roles... but agreed, he's delightful in Asteroid City, a movie that grows on me every day.

thank you joe for once again giving us a beautifully deranged game. i think this one was particularly beautiful and particularly deranged. 10/10

Tim’s generally enjoyable and Steve carrell I’ve loved since middle school circa 2001. He hasn’t always been the best In drama but when he’s good, he’s real good

Brady Thomas

Wait, isn't this Kaitlyn Dever's 5th? She was in Dear Evan Hansen too (I'll edit this comment if they address this later, I'm just starting the episode)

Jason Feffer

Just want to point it out as it's been mentioned on multiple episodes now. Eighth Grade was not nominated for Original Screenplay, it's fully THOB eligible.

Chauncey Telese

The Carrell breakdown could've been better researched. The pre Daily Show portion of his career is worth talking about. And while not important Peter Segal made a ton of big comedies including Tommy Boy. But great episode overall.

Been waiting for you to do this movie! It came out when I was still in undergrad and taking a performance criticism class, and I had to write a paper about performances in a movie currently in the theaters. I picked this one because of the Oscar buzz and basically just wrote about how Timmy does laps around Carell in it. I actually think I like Timmy’s performance better than most of the eventual supporting actor lineup. I remember feeling much the same about the movie but after seeing the dreadful A GOOD PERSON last year I wonder if I’d feel like this is more of an achievement as a movie about addiction.

(a) This may have been the nuttiest Joe Reid game yet - and I got kind of good at it. (2) I think I watched 𝑊𝑎𝑡𝑐ℎ𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝐸𝑙𝑙𝑖𝑒, probably every episode of it...and don't particularly remember Carell on it.

anth.

if i get a say, my contribution this month is to exclusively be used for a cheesy gordita crunch

Listening to you talk about Timmy being in multiple Best Picture contenders in one year - Miriam Shor did it this year with Maestro and American Fiction (She's also in Guardians of the Galaxy if we want to count all nominated movies...)

The "Beautiful Boy Erased Is Back" of it all just always makes me think of Bobby Finger using "Ben is back" as a euphemism. And speaking of homosexuality, it occurred to me as Joe was talking about the class and race issues ("Can you believe a beautiful white boy from a good family got hooked on drugs?!!") is that its also a sexuality issues. Because, yes, as a gay man I can totally see a beautiful white boy getting hooked on meth. Didn't everyone see "Queer As Folk"?!

Re Cranston i’m actually not a huge BB head but him on Malcolm in the Middle is my favorite comedic performance of ALL TIME

Michelle M

Justice for our favorite Floki, Gustav Skarsgård.

Amanda Hartel

as someone who's been forced to watch the IF trailer too many times, Reynolds isn't playing the girl's father, he's playing a character called "the Man Upstairs", who I assume will be revealed to also be an imaginary friend in a twist. Carell seems to be doing his Despicable Me shtick.

Pretty sure Gru fanatics are just called Minions

Hey Joe. I am freaking loving your new movie game on vulture. Even though I’m lucky to get half right. But that’s how good it is! Vulture is lucky to have you! Good job

To the brief convo about the In Memoriam segment at the Oscars, I think it’s even more convoluted than people realize! I’m pretty sure it’s like an advocacy thing: people have to ‘petition,’ i.e. put in a formal request, for a person to be included. That’s why somebody noteworthy is often left out— nobody thought it was gonna be necessary for them to petition for inclusion. At least, this is how it used to be, the way of doing it may have changed. TCM always does the best In Memoriam videos each December, and is super inclusive of all manner of folks who have worked in film.

Brian Tyree Henry would have been my personal choice for supporting actor for If Beale Street Could Talk that year

Brandon Skidmore

Joe said “Put down your meth” and you know what? I did!

Just wanted to point out that the list of Kaitlyn Dever movies rattled off during this episode was incomplete. She's been part of 5 episodes so far, counting this one. Joe missed Dear Evan Hansen in his list. Next one will be her sixth.
